Cecil Sapp, a Bronco for his entire five-year career, highlights the list of cuts in the Denver Broncos’ attempt to get down to 53. Sapp, the only Denver starter to log any playing time in the team’s preseason finale, was waived-injured because of a hip flexor.
The team promised another back, Ryan Torain, a 2008 fifth-round pick, that he’d keep his spot on the team despite dealing with an elbow injury that will most likely keep him sidelined into November.
Also cut were WR Glenn Martinez, QB Darrell Hackney, OL P.J. Alexander, TE Chad Mustard, TE Brett Pierce, DE Paul Carrington, DE Larry Birdine, OL Mitch Erickson, and S Josh Barrett.

Florio, can you explain why the team would “waive-injured” Sapp rather than place him on IR? Is it just a money-impact kind of decision? Thanks….

I hope Shawne Merriman is watching the process today. This is a good reason to do the surgery now. For each and every team it always comes down to money. It happened to Jerry Rice twice, Joe Montana and Brett Favre (just to name so big names) it will eventually happen to Merriman unless he retires first. Cecil Sapp is one of those hardworking players who was not a star yet gave it his all to play. Now he gets waived injured. It is all about money.

My guess is that Cecil Sapp will be playing for the Houston Texans in the near future.
