Earlier this year, Dr. Z of Sports Illustrated cured the Vikings’ Kavorka by picking them to win the Super Bowl. His employer now has placed an official curse on the Philadelphia Eagles.
SI has picked the Eagles to advance to the Super Bowl, where they are predicted to lose to the Patriots.
We think it’s possible that the Eagles will come February get to Florida, the state in which Donovan McNabb blows chunks whenever he plays there. But now that SI has picked them to do it, the chances of it happening have plummeted.
Also worthy of a mention is the fact that the projected AFC playoff field is identical to the six teams that made it last year. (For the NFC, four of the six teams are picked to make it back.)
The reality, however, is that the turnover rate is usually 50 percent. Based on past trends, six of the 12 teams that made it in 2007 are likely to not make it back in 2008.
The challenge is figuring out who they’ll be.
As we see it, the Titans are ripe for a stumble, and the Steelers will struggle with the toughest schedule in the league (not to mention offensive and defensive lines that aren’t all that good any more).
We’ll unveil our official picks next week. For now, it’s a safe bet that we won’t have the Steelers or the Titans among the AFC field.

Nothing SI says or does could do anything to curse my beloved Eagles more than they are already cursed!

I don’t get this pick at all. I like McNabb and Westbrook and I think it’s a good team, but that division? With those injuries (already), especially to their WRs? I don’t see it.

Eagles fans..let’s look as it as a reverse curse. We are already cursed. This prediction may just put us over the hump. It seems all of a sudden, the the professional pickers are chosing us. The sexy pick I guess..
Time will tell..

I guess the thought process is that D wins in the playoffs. They may not have been a great D last year, but all that was really missing was turnovers. Hopefully the upgrades and maturation of younger players develops the D into a great one.The eagles have shown before that u can get to the nfc championship (Superbowl too) without excellent WRs. Add in a return game that will be in the tops of the league, they certainly have a good shot of making it there.

As a bengals fan and a close watcher of the afc north, the whole division is screwed. If anyone’s going to be able to pull a division championship out is the steelers. Ugh, it pains me just to type it lol.

The Eagles? Seriously?
That just sounds like a tired answer from a person too lazy to actually watch any football. I mean, what have the Eagles done in the offseason to warrant such a prediction? They’ve been mediocre (at best) for a long time now. They’d be lucky if they end up 3rd in the NFC East. Most likely, it’ll end up like: Dallas, Washington, Philly, NYG by the end of the year. I’d be amazed if the Eagles can pull out 8 wins.
One thing’s for certain, I’m looking forward to their game against Seattle. That will be one of our easy wins.

Even though the guy is horrendous, the Vikings were Dr. Z’s Super Bowl pick from the NFC. This Eagles selection must be from another SI writer. Regardless, does anyone even pay attention to SI anymore?

your knocking the Steelers makes no sense. the Browns, while much better, have like the third hardest schedule, so they are not much better off than the Steelers and do not have the team the Steelers do. The Bengals and the Ravens are a mess right now. so we can count them out.
Patriots
Colts
Steelers
Chargers
Wildcard
Jags
Brownies

It’s impossible to know which team has the toughest schedule at the beginning of the season. As you just pointed out, half of the playoff teams don’t return to the playoffs, so how can you use their previous season’s records to weigh the toughness of the upcoming season’s match-ups?

I’m a Bears fan, but I think the Steelers will at very least be in the AFC Championship game. I also think the Pats don’t make the playoffs this year (long shot, I know, but we always gotta have a dark horse. Their defense looks, uh, not so good).

Spoonman:
Cowboy hater or not, the Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game in over 10 years. They were the hot pick last year and choked, they choked the year before. Until they win a PO game, i wouldn’t ever pick them to goto the superbowl. The Eagles, and they are pretty much the same team, same coaching, lots of the same faces on O and D have been to the playoffs many times, won a lot of playoff games, and even been to the super bowl.
Now, thats not saying that the Eagles or the Cowboys will or won’t do squat, but if I had to pick between the 2 of them as to who would go past the first round of the playoffs, my pick would be Philly.
And now I leave for the last PS game at the Linc.

“I guess the thought process is that D wins in the playoffs. They may not have been a great D last year, but all that was really missing was turnovers.”
Yeah. That’s all. Do you realize that if you added all Eagles INTs from last year with all Asante Samuel INTs from last year, they’re still two short of the number of INTs the Cowboys got last year? And keep in mind that Newman and Henry were hardly ever healthy at the same time.

I cannot wait to hear who is coming out of the AFC North and how they plan on doing so with nearly an identical schedule as the Steelers. For starters, Pittsburgh is by far the healthiest team in the division at the moment.

Have you seen a Cleveland preseason game? Do you understand they will have the worst pass defense in the NFL this year - in a division with Big Ben and Carson Palmer - not to mention they play Dallas, Indy etc… Cleveland was 26th last year in sacks so they aren’t going to make up for a bad secondary with a pass rush - and don’t use Shaun Rodgers as an excuse as he has never had more than seven sacks in a season (averaging only four a year).
