The Cowboys already had one of the best tight ends in the NFL in Jason Witten, but they selected another tight end, Martellus Bennett, in the second round of the draft.
So far, Bennett doesn’t seem to have made a great impression on Witten.
Bennett tells Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News that when he asked Witten for help early in training camp, Witten gave him a stern message: “I’m not going to be [beep] doing this all the [beep] time. You’ve got to know what the [beep] to do.”
For his part, however, Witten says that Bennett is misreading his attitude toward him.
“He says it all the time: ‘Jason doesn’t like me,’” Witten said of Bennett. “It’s not that I don’t like him. It’s just that I’m letting him figure it out. He’s got to figure it out first.”
Bennett, who was criticized in training camp for everything from struggling to learn the offense to sulking and lacking energy, sounds like he’s still got plenty to figure out.

Bennett is a talent, but he’s immature. He’s shown a few flashes in training camp and eventually (hopefully) he’ll “get it”. And that will give us a devastating 1-2 punch at TE.
That said, I expect him to be #3 on the depth chart to start the season.

I am telling you, you have got to watch out for this kid in the comming years. First of all he is 6′7 and he use to play basketball as well. So not only does he have the height, he has the hops and the hands to be a real football player. This tough love is a good thing from Witten, let him strugle to figure it out and then go in and help him later by tweaking little thing for him. so not only is he going to be mentored by Witten (eventually) but he has T.O. teaching him some things. and he will have Romo Throwing hom the ball.
Martellus Bennett will be the next Gates but WAYYY WAYYY better
believe that
Goooo Steelers

“Tell me again why I should help you take my job?”
I’m sure Witten will be more forthcoming when he’s been in the league 10 years, and he needs to groom a successor.

It sounds like “Witten” is a little upset or never having won a Superbowl. He is probably more upset that he’s never been part of a dynasty.
I may be mistaken, but i’m pretty sure that Witten wouldn’t know a dynasty if it choke slammed him on a table full of jello Jigglers.

I don’t know if its just the way he’s been portrayed in on Hard Knocks, or if its the way he really is, but the show depicts him as the type of person who always has an excuse. Even with little things like tucking in or taping the jersey during practice so the defense doesn’t have an extra place to grab him, he repeatedly replied with “I can’t practice like that”.
It appears the kid has an attitude of “I was one of the top TE’s in college, I’m in the NFL now, here I am, respect me”. Unfortunately, he’s not even the 2nd best TE on that team bc his work ethic sucks, and he seems to be constantly looking for a hand out as opposed to *earning* his roster spot.
It sounds like Dallas needs to tell him straight up: We’re tired of the attitude and the bs. Bust your ass, learn your assignments, and earn your spot, or you are gone. Period.”

Bennett was an extremely high rated prospect coming out of Alief (sp) in Houston (might be wrong on the high school). This brainiac opted to go to Texas A&M instead of some other powerhouse in football. Is it any surprise he has been criticized?

I don’t like him either. Just basing this off of what is shown on Hard Knocks. He doesn’t listen to a word his coaches say, and rationalizes it by saying he is one of the best football players on the planet. “I was a second round pick!.”
I don’t blame Whitten, if he isn’t willing to put in the work, why should Whitten?

Yeah, this guy’s attitude is portrayed soooo badly on Hard Knocks. We don’t really know because he’s a rookie, but on the show, he comes off as a very young and spoiled athlete. This in turn leads to the TE coach, one of the Garrett clones, riding him every second of practice. Witten is probably upset because Bennett gets more feature time on the show than him, and he’s the All-Pro! However, Bennett is getting yelled at by the coaches and adjusting to being a professional, while all the footage of Witten is him like change diapers and teaching his daughter how to read.

Everything I’ve ever seen concerning Witten is that he’s a really nice guy. If Bennett wants to act like a spoiled child instead of a man, maybe he needs to go home and do something else for a living.

I remember when Favre said the same thing concerning his replacement. Sounds like Witten is as insecure as Brett. Scared the rookie will take his job. Sooner or later it will happen to Witten, just like everyone else in the league.
Kind of funny though. The league preaches finding mentors and learning from vets, but older vets are all scared by incoming rookies.

Judging from “Hard Knocks” Bennett looks like your atypical pre-madonna bitch. Think Glanville summed up this kid’s career when he said the NFL means not for long. His tight end coach does hate him it appears and Witten clearly won’t like him now. Nobody better at beating the Cowboys then themselves.

Witten has always had a chip on his sholder. This guy was the best TE to ever come out of Tennessee and was only drafted in the 3rd round. Witten is now one of the top five best TE in football and now Dallas drafts his replacement. I woundn’t be a happy camper either. I don’t see Witten helping out Bennett much, but I don’t see him helping Bennett much either.

Maybe HBO makes more of it than it actually is… but on the show he always seems so down on himself. He’s a kid, and not mature enough for the NFL. He definitely has the talent, but it’s not Witten’s job to show him everything.

After watching three episodes of Hard Knocks on HBO, I don’t like Bennett either. He’s the typical selfish, lazy, and uncoachable athlete. Every show has Jeff Garrett (TE’s coach and brother of Jason Garrett) pleading with Bennett to snap his chin strap, tuck his shirt in, and basically just listen. With which the sulking Bennett replies “but coach…”.
The most condemning part of Hard Knocks is when Bennett decrees that he has come into the Cowboys as “One of the best players in the nation, a second round draft pick”….Funny, I always thought the best players in the nation were always targeted in the first round.
Good thing the ‘boys got Felix Jones…he has the look and attitude of a PROFESSIONAL Football player
