To get from 80 players to 75 in advance of Tuesday’s deadline for making initial roster cuts, the Green Bay Packers have moved defensive tackle Justin Harrell from the active/physically unable to perform list to the reserve/PUP list.
The move means that Harrell won’t be available for at least the first six weeks of the regular season.
Since a player on active/PUP counts against the roster and a player on reserve/PUP doesn’t, the move shrinks the current roster by one.
To get to 75, the Packers also cut four players — running back DeShawn Wynn, running back Ryan Powdrell, receiver Chris Francies, and offensive lineman Ryan Considine.
Wynn appeared in seven games and started four of them for the Packers last season. He was a seventh-round pick in the 2007 draft, and will pass through waivers. He was injured during Green Bay’s Monday night game against the Broncos, and was placed on injured reserve.

That’s actually a coup for Harrell. He avoided IR!

I remember how absolutely F*****& pissed off I was that Ted Thompson drafted an injury prone fat defensive tackle who missed his senior season for the 2007 draft. But then the Packers went 13-3 so I didn’t care…
Now the Packers traded Brett Favre, traded Corey Williams (DT) to the Browns, and our big fat defensive tackle is now worthless.

Hmmmm……. Have you seen how Corey Williams has been doing with the Browns? LOL They would have been silly to pay him the kind of money he was going to command in free agency because his stats were inflated early in the season by being a situational “fresh” player in the rotation and the demand was high for D Tackles. Smart move to get something for him than let him walk away for nothing. When he had to play as a full time starter towards the end of the season his play dropped off quite a bit. Definitely not worth the $$$ he was going to get and I doubt Cleveland is feeling to happy about what they’ve gotten so far either.
Here’s another analogy. The Bears and B. Berrian. Berrian never even had 1000 yds receiving and wanted huge $$$ in free agency. He knew that some team would be desperate for a receiver (ie. Vikings) and overpay for his services. He’s now the 4th highest paid receiver in the league and never cracked the production level of a top 35 receiver. He will also never be a top 15 receiver either, but still got the money.

The Packers are dreaming if they think this fat slob is going to be ready to play by Week 7. Time to cut your losses, he was below average in the games he did play in last year and then promptly went home to Mama’s house in the off season and put on more fat.
TT deserves the heat he will take on this one.

Dont blame Thompson. Harrell was considered a first round talent by most. There were several teams waiting to draft him in the first round if he slipped past the Packers. He had some injury history in college, but that isnt unusual. The same thing is true of RBs Brandon Jackson and Kregg Lumpkin. Harrell hurt his back by lifting weights in March or April of this year. Is Thompson supposed to stay at Harrells house in the off season and supervise his workouts…..

“Pick a guy who was injured coming into the league in the first round”
The Bears obviously noticed the Pack’s success with this strategy and tried to copy them this year.
And Corey Williams for Brian Brohm was a good deal.

Yes, Thompson is to blame. Harrell may have been considered first round “talent”, but that doesn’t mean he was worth a first round pick. Other things need to be figured in when making a selection, such as character, team need, and oh yeah, injury history. Thompson, however, decided to overlook those 3 factors. My guess is he pulled a name from a hat at random, because I can’t see any other reason he burned a 1st rounder on Turd Ferguson.

I wonder if Wynn was too much a deep-south/Florida boy.
He never seemed to act like he wanted to play in GB.
Wouldn’t be surprised if he resurfaced at a more southerly latitude.
Even if he does, I doubt he’ll have a long career — seems lazy to me.

Justin Harrell is the Packers version Erasmus James (D-lineman picked in 1st round despite durability concerns, only to find out the concerns were legit).
So don’t call it bad luck. Call it for what it was — a 1 st round gamble Ted Thompson made on an injury risk that he seems to be losing.

“Wasn’t Harrell another of those fantastic Thompson picks? Are we seeing a pattern here? ”
Get a grip, TT haters! The only “pattern” I see since Thompson arrived is winning. Do you really want to go down the list of TT’s draft picks to bolster your TT hating position? You might come out on the short end of that one, pal. What is it about 13-3 that has you guys so upset?

Ted Thompson is GM of the year. If Harrell doesn’t pan out, and that’s still an IF, then that’s one bad pick. Ron Wolf was a great GM too, and he sucked in the first round. Remember John Micheals?
I would take Thompson over any GM in the league.

In hindsight, the Harrell pick was a bad choice at number 16. He was originally thought to be a potential top 10 pick, but with his college injuries, he was pegged to go in the bottom of the first round. Not a huge reach, but given his productiveness, or lack there of, he has been a terrible pick to date. That could change in time, but not good for now.
I liked what I saw from Wynn on the field last year, but if they’re gonna roll with three RBs, Jackson is obviously in and keeping a blocker like Morency around as the third would be wise.

TT haters need to get a life. Ron Wolf was a great GM and he drafted Jamal Reynolds, Terrell Buckley and J. Michaels. Crap, they traded up for Reynolds if I remember correctly.
Then, remember Mike Sherman? yea, how quickly we forget entire DRAFTS that were busts. Robert Ferguson, Ahmad Carroll, Joey Thomas, etc. Really, get a grip.

What ever happened to that D-tackle that had all the codene-laced cough syrup in his car outside that bar in Texas? Is any of his season threatened? Losing him and Harrell couldn’t help. A smaller-sized Barrnett needs decent D-tackles to be most effective. There, a post from a purple fan that isn’t about your frigging QB situation.

This prompted me to look at the picks following GB’s in the 2007 draft. I don’t know else would’ve been worthy and (likely) for them to pick at that spot. Reggie Nelson? Everyone would’ve said that was way too early for him. Dwayne Bowe, Anthony Spencer, Greg Olsen… there were some other decent talents in the back half of the 1st, but this wasn’t like picking Tony Mandarich over Barry Sanders.

purpleguy: The DT you were talking about is Johnny Jolly, and yes, if he were to miss anything more than a game or two we’ll be in trouble at that position. From what I’ve read, his attorney thought that the issue wouldn’t be dealt with legally until after the ‘08 season, and it sounds like the NFL won’t do anything until the legal process gets rolling.

Erasmus James and Harrell situations are completely different. James had lower leg injuries and questions coming out of college and the Vikings took a chance. Harrell had a bicep tear reaching out to the side for a guy trying to make an awkward and difficult play. He had no previous back injuries and bicep injuries are not nearly the same as knee injuries are.
How many guys have you seen retiring early or getting cut because their biceps keep tearing or they have a history of torn biceps?

Jolly is highly unlikely to be suspended, however, the same could not be said for Bryant McKinnie for banging a guy over the head with a pole at 6:30 AM in front of a strip club. What does it say about the character of a guy who hangs out a strip club till 630 AM?
Wait, don’t answer that since this is MCKinnie’s second arrest, the first one for the most famous of incidents, licking a hooker on the Love Boat cruise.
Ask yourself this simple question, if you are going to engage in oral sex with a woman, would your choice be a hooker? How stupid do you have to be? But on a team with the mental giants of Coach Brad Childress and his QB who speaks at a 4 grade level, McKinnie is far from the biggest dumbass on the team. That’s saying a lot.
