Moments ago on NFL Network’s coverage of the Bills-Colts preseason game at brand-spanking-new Lucas Oil Stadium, Adam Schefter reported that Colts coach Tony Dungy said there’s a “good chance” that quarterback Peyton Manning will play in the regular-season opener.

We’re not quite sure where “good chance” lands in the range of possible outcomes.  More than fifty percent?  More than seventy?

Regardless, it’s significantly less more pessimistic than initial reports of Manning’s surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee.  At that time, his availability for Week One was regarded as a no-brainer proposition.  [Editor’s note:  Thanks to the reader who posted a ridiculously long comment pointing out that the prior version of this entry used the term “less” instead if “more.”  We hope it didn’t take as long to write the comment as it took us to read it.  It definitely didn’t take as long to delete it.]

The stakes seem to be getting higher.  Jim Sorgi won’t play on Sunday night because of a right knee problem.  And Jared Lorenzen looked so-so in completing seven of eleven passes.  Quinn Gray will play this second half.

The only certainty is that someone will be playing quarterback for the Colts when they officially christen their new digs two weeks from tonight.  At this point, however, it’s anyone’s guess as to who it will be.
