The folks at FOX are blazing another new trail when it comes to NFL coverage. For the first time, an active player will serve as an analyst on a network preview show.
Specifically, Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reports that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman will join FSN’s Pro Football Preview.
Merriman will join Jay Glazer and Eddie George for the weekly offering on FOX’s all-sports cable network.
“It is one thing to have somebody who played talk about what’s going on each week, but to have somebody who is still playing takes our show to another level,” said FOX Senior Vice President Rick Jaffe. “The insight he will bring just raised the bar for every NFL pre-game show on television.”
In the past, the various network shows have hosted active players during their bye weeks. But this is the first time a player will show up every week to talk about the coming slate of games.
Each Thursday, Merriman will fly from San Diego to Los Angeles for the taping of the show.
Accommodations likely will be necessary on October 23, when the Chargers will be preparing for an October 26 game in London against the Saints, and on December 4, when the Chargers will be hosting the Raiders in a game to be aired on NFL Network.

Additional accommodations likely will be necessary to charter another plane for his ego.

That’s not such a big deal. If they really wanted to break wind, I mean ground, they’d mike him up and have him call the game while he’s playing it.

After so many failures having retired players bringing their poor analysis and biases onto television poorly disguised as “objective analysts” it is time for a change!
I got it! Lets bring an ACTIVE player on board to provide poor analysis and bring his biases into the mix disguised as objective analysis! Brilliant!

Seems incredibly stupid for the Chargers to allow something like this. An active player, involved in week-to-week game planning, potentially exposing what the San Diego defense keys on for any given game. Merriman wouldn’t seem to have the chops to affirmatively mislead … allowing him to speak off the top of his head just seems like an unnecessary risk in a game where the difference btwn first and worst is so razor thin.

Gee, how did I KNOW, before even popping in here, that every single
comment was going to be a negative one either about Merriman or the Chargers? You people seriously need to get a life. I hope people will hate on all of you as much as you hate on the Chargers. WTF is your reason for hating the Chargers so much? Did a Charger kill someone in your family? I lived in San Diego for over 35 years, and don’t remember there being any concentration camps there… I really don’t get it. You people are so full of hate it’s disgusting.

@SuperCharger
Get a grip. It happens to every team.
You sound like a bitter, bitter person. I doubt it was anyone in here who dealt you your lot in life.
Besides, maybe if Merriman didn’t actually have a big ego or get suspended for steroids, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. And it is pretty stupid of the Chargers to allow this to happen.
There are several Hello Kitty sites all over the web if you can’t hack it here.
