Adding fuel to the reports that running back Ronnie Brown could be on the way out in Miami is the Dolphins’ own depth chart, which lists Brown as the No. 2 back, behind Ricky Williams.
Teams’ online depth charts in August don’t necessarily correspond with the way the squad lines up on the field in September. And the same depth chart lists rookie Chad Henne as the No. 4 quarterback behind starter Chad Pennington and backups Josh McCown and John Beck, even though Henne is virtually guaranteed of a roster spot whereas either McCown or Beck will most likely be gone by the end of the month.
But the Dolphins’ previous depth chart (which is still available at NFL.com) showed Brown ahead of Williams. Something happened to make the Dolphins change course and put Williams in the top spot.
For the team’s part, the Dolphins say Williams moved up on the depth chart because Brown probably won’t play in the team’s next preseason game, Saturday night against the Chiefs. But Brown is still listed ahead of other running backs on the roster who will play Saturday night.
Whether it’s Brown or Williams who starts in Week 1, it’s clear that the current regime running the Dolphins feels no particular need to follow the path of the old regime.

Is this really a story about an ESPN depth chart? ESPN just puts up whatever they want on there. I wouldn’t worry about any of that until the regular season starts.

They won’t get rid of Brown, regardless of the puff piece in the Miami Herald. You can’t count on Williams- Miami knows this. Plus, why would you disband a potentially good one-two punch when the team is geared up to run the ball. Regardless of how impressive you might think Pennington/Henne are, the fact is we will be a running team and we don’t have the weapons to air it out. This is probably one of Parcell’s motivational tools. Cameron had Brown returning punts last year after he turned up out of shape and then made him share the starter position with Chatman. That seemed to fire Brown up and I guess that’s what they want. Brown has talent but he’s too laidback- I read a comment where he was surprised that Pennington kept the offense back an extra hour. That seemed to sum him up- why wouldn’t you expect to work your ass off when you’re coming off a 1-15 year. I’d be happy for them to trade him but they won’t get anything better than a 3rd or even a 4th unless he puts together a good season.

Brown will not be the featured back in 2008 because he’s recovering from a torn ACL and likely won’t be himself until 2009. There is no reason to overwork him this year when he can split time with Williams, where both can be productive and Brown can save himself for the future. Brown is going nowhere, because while Ricky is good he simply cannot be counted on (see 2004).

Why put pressure on Ronnie Brown to start when he is recovering from the ACL and the thumb injury he got in South Georgia over the weekend? When you have a 100% healthy, capable, focused Ricky Williams you start Ricky Williams. What a luxury. Ricky ain’t a Parcells guy anyway he’s a Wannstedt guy.

Yeah,
This is stoopid. There is no evidence that Brown is in trouble. He is nursing and injury and Ricky looks great. If anything it’s just a Parcells ploy to get Ronnie to work harder or to play hurt.

If Brown does end up getting benched or cut then the top of the ‘05 draft becomes even more bust-ariffic. Of the top 7 picks only Edwards is starting for the team who drafted him.
Smith=benched in SF
Brown=benched in MIA?
Benson=out of the league
Williams=severely injured & may not play again
Jones=don’t even get me started
Williamson=traded for peanuts

I guess if you throw enough sh*t against the wall some will eventually stick.
Ronnie Brown is ten months removed from reconstructive knee surgery. Of course he’s struggling a bit this offseason. Give the guy a break.
Why in the world would you get rid of a 1-2 punch like that when you have crap at QB?
Lastly, Brown was the 2nd overall pick in 2005. His contract runs through 2009. If they want to deal him wait until next offseason. His value can only go up if he comes back strongly and the cap hit wouldn’t be as high.

Well Michael David Smith why would the current regime follow
the path of past regimes over the last eight years. They were
all regimes that operated without any longevity or pattern of
success. The past regimes have failed to take advantage of
opportunities to get quarterbacks Drew Bres or Brady Quinn.
The regimes of the past let receivers like Chris Chandler and
Wes Welker get away…and so it went with past regimes. Think
and say what you want about Parcells. He has managed to turn
around every franchise within a short period of time. The
Patriots, Jets, Cowboys and now he will turn around the very
bad 1 and 15 Dolphins.

it’s a running back by committee in miami…. those two, (when both healthy), have shared carries before. (see 2005). i’m sure it will ultimately return to the shared-carry role, but only when Ronnie is fully healed from his ACL injury.
This is just semantics, i wouldn’t read too much into this.

If you listened to Sparano’s press conferences, he said he wanted to figure out who needed to start the game to be effective and who could provide energy off the bench. Ricky has outperformed Ronnie in both roles from game 1 and 2 of the preseason so this move makes sense

Ricky williams deserves his shot. This guy when he was not being caught getting stoned was one of the top 3 tailbacks in the league. He served his time. The last time he was suspended he had the same problem as travis henry which henry got away with. Goodell let henry off the hook but tagliabue made williams sit. Which policy worked better. He maybe older then ronnie brown but the guy is still fresh considering how many times hes been suspended. Brown is a good tailback but the truth is that he has been getting nicked up pretty bad since the dolphins have had no line since he was drafted. Once a running back starts getting injured in the ways that he has then they are basically almost done. They get hit on almost every play unlike other positions. Williams over his career has probably had less serious injuries. Its pretty bad when both the great rbs from auburn are on their ways out.
