Veteran tight end Marcus Pollard, who never could quite find a home after leaving the Colts, has been released by the New England Patriots.
Pollard spent ten years in Indianapolis, from 1995 through 2004. He played for the Lions in 2005 and 2006, and the Seahawks in 2007.
The Pats replaced Pollard with rookie Tyson DeVree.
For Pollard, it very well could be the end of his career.

Long live the Bradley Braves!!
Pollard is one of the few that never played football in college and was such a success.

He stunk it up last year with the hawks. Lots of dropped balls.

Pollard was so bad for the Seahawks that he made me pine for the days of Jerramy Stevens.
Or Itula Mili for that matter.

It’s a shame. Fantastic guy. Hopefully, if he is going to hang ‘em up, the Colts sign him to some sort of deal that will allow him to go in a horseshoe.

Is Parcells watching?
Pollard would be a 100% upgrade at the Dolphins’ TE position.

more evidence that anyone can have success in Indy. Had Freddie Mitchell been drafted by Indy and Wayne by the Eagles….Fred Ex would be an all-pro with a ring and Fed Ex endorsements…

He was always real good with Colts. But Manning makes alot of people look good. See Edgeran James (sic), Brandon Stokely, et al.

Ravens could use another TE since Heap is so damn soft. Wilcox is still healing, as well. And out 3rd stringer tore his ACL in opening of mini camps. Hell the person leading the team in receptions right now is the 4th TE, and Ray Rice.

naptown317 : If Marcus does retire it would be awesome if he went out as a Colt. He was a great team player in Indy and did a ton of things in the community. Hopefully, it won’t be a Polian decision. Marcus was drafted before he came…. so he is not one of ‘his’ guys. Maybe Polian will take the high road, 50/50. Or ultimately it should be Mr Irsay call, he will do the right thing.

I agree about Manning and the Colts making a lot of players better than they would be on other teams. They’re just that good.
Interesting about DeVree. The Pats had picked him up as a UDFA in May and released him in June before picking up Pollard. My sense at the time was they were looking for experienced blocking help in a third TE/backup to Thomas and Watson, sort of what Kyle Brady was supposed to be last season. So, now veteran Pollard has been cut for rookie DeVree, who is a fairly big guy (6′6″, 247), caught a few passes and apparently blocked okay at Colorado. Not sure what this says regarding the future for the other two TEs on the roster (3rd-year Spach and rookie Stupar), but it’s probably not a good thing (although Stupar has apparently been doing some of the long snaps for kickers in practice).
It’s plainly a comparison-shopping thing now. I’m guessing that Belichick would prefer to have three TEs on the final roster, given Watson’s and Thomas’ recent injury history. If he keeps Spach, one of the rookies might make the practice squad. OTOH, if none of the three plays up to standard, Belichick may just go with two TEs and keep a spare O-lineman or another rookie linebacker for special teams.

Go in where as a horseshoe? Certainly not the HOF.
Great guy and too bad he just couldn’t make the team.

naptown: If I remember correctly, Pollard was offered a ton of money from the Lions and the Colts did not/ could not match the offer.
He may not be NFL HOF material, however, all around he is good enough for the Colts HOF. Is biggest problem is he is a pre-Polian player, so odds are not good for him.

Pollard was brought in for a camp body. He’s soft and the Pats knew it up front. They have need smacking him in the mouth for years as a Colt!
He had a chance, not! Pretty much everyone that follows the Pats, knew he wouldn’t make the team. The other issue, BB wants to carry 5 rb’s this season. That leaves 2 spots for the Te’s.
He could still get a shot with a team that utilizes a 3 Te sets..
Good Luck, Marcus!
