The Browns were penalized 10 times for 128 yards in a 37-34 loss to the Giants.
MLB Andra Davis got a 15-yard penalty for taking a swing at a Giants player.
Coach Romeo Crennel said, “Evidently we didn’t do enough work in the last 10 days. Like I told them, it’s my fault for trying to save them a little bit and not beat them up on the practice field. So we came down here and got beat up in the game.”
In addition to suffering a concussion, QB Derek Anderson bruised his hand when he fell to the ground.
Also injured were S Brodney Pool (concussion), WR Joshua Cribbs (left ankle) and LB Leon Williams (neck).
DT Shaun Rogers sat out with an undisclosed injury, but whatever it is, it doesn’t appear to be serious.
Backup QB Brady Quinn rallied the Browns from a 30-3 deficit to make the score close.
Third-string QB Ken Dorsey made it even closer with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Lance Leggett with 2:25 left.
Said Quinn of the first-string wide receivers, “Those guys make it easy on quarterbacks.”
WR Syndric Steptoe, a seventh-round pick in 2007 who spent last season on the practice squad, could use his special teams skills to make the 53-man roster.

Anybody still want to hype up the Browns after watching their first team get carved up like a (how appropriate!) big pumpkin?
Good thing they were wearing those Brown pants, no doubt they were soiling themselves by the time the second quarter rolled around.

Oh and please… don’t give me any of this “but Quinn looked good” crap after he got that interception of his turned into a gift Brownies’ TD by the butterfingered Giants’ DB. Talk about your undeserved stats.

Syndric Steptoe is a kid to watch. I liked him coming out of Arizona last year mainly because of his speed and his elusive running abilities. My question mark had always been his hands, but his performance last night shows he’s made significant progress since draft day 07. Browns still played like balls, though.

What’s with this Steptoe praise — all he did was let a Giants’ DB hand him off the ball for the cheesiest touchdown of the preseason.
Again, that was a pick by Quinn he got away with.

Major Burns,
With all do respect sir, Beau Bell (are we really discussing this guy!?!?) is a 4th round pick. A fourth round pick who isn’t expected to play on defense not much, if at all this year.
The Browns have much bigger issues than that guy right now.
Yours truely,

3 catches for 80 yards, 90-yard kick return and a TD. Glad you watched the game. So closely, in fact, that you noticed how much of a “Bust” FOURTH round draft selection Beau Bell is?

I am absolutely amazed at the amount of overreacting going on about preseason games. Did the Browns look good last night? Abso-frieking-lutely not. And the coaching should certainly be concerned and I don’t mind if THEY overreact to get the players’ attention. But this is still a very talented team that believes in itself after last year, and one poor quarter is not going to change that. If anything, this performance came at the right time and gives the coaches a chance to ensure that the team is prepared, hungry, and humble going into the regular season.
The Browns have had all kinds of praise heaped on them without really accomplishing anything. Perhaps that were reading too many press clippings and making Super Bowl plans while forgetting that they have to play with the same intensity they had last year.
This is still a good football team, with a solid core of young, confident players. They will be fine, and a performance like last night (assuming none of the injuries were serious) could be just what was needed to get them back in the right mindset.
Also, I live in Dallas and the amount of overreaction about every little aspect of the Cowboys’ preseason games just blows me away. It’s PRESEASON! If you want to react come the first few weeks of the regular season, okay. But can’t we all just relax a little bit while teams work out some kinks, get in sync, and look at some new players? Let everyone throw their cards on the table in the regular season before we start judging hands, so to speak.

I think the problem is more with the coaching, unfortunately. Romeo is just not NFL head coach material. I believe the team succeeded in spite of him last year–remember, this is the same guy that makes a game out of choosing starting QBs with a coin-flip (yeah, that’s what champion coaches do, right?!) and decided Charlie Frye was our man last year, just for two examples. Yet he was rewarded for missing the playoffs last season with a huge new contract (my, aren’t our standards high in Cleveland sports? The man *almost* made the playoffs–let’s rip up his old contract and give him a raise!) The local media has been reporting all summer about what a creampuff training camp the Browns had…. no contact, taking days off, etc. The players love him, of course… but does he prepare his team to win? He even admitted as much last night in his post-game comments. Super nice guy, to be sure… but a lousy HC. Look at how the Patriots do things–a winning organization, where Romeo gets credit for all those rings as Def Coordinator–and then look at the Browns organization. One might expect Romeo would bring some of that winning methodology to our organization, but it’s clear that he’s more interested in being liked by the players and the press than in doing what it takes to field a winner. There are reasons why this guy was nearly 60 before he got his first shot at being an NFL HC, and he continues to show us why…

Oh. See, and there I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that you weren’t just making a lame attempt to troll.
Since Bell wasn’t mentioned in Florio’s post, and wasn’t brought up by anybody in the thread, and didn’t play last night… you brought it up here–why?
“This just in: Beau Bell is a bust.”
So, he’s been out nearly two weeks, and you didn’t bring him up because you thought he played last night, since you knew he was out… it simply took two weeks to sink in and hit you as a news flash? Little slow on the uptake, huh?
Troll.

Wow, just when I thought they couldn’t get dumber…
The term “this just in” isn’t always used literally. It’s sometimes used in a humorous vein, for effect, you know, just like tunas don’t REALLY bark.(And I’ll be happy to define the word “literally” to you if you want. Free of charge. Really!)
Again, Einstein, you’re the one who accused me of not knowing Bust Boy wasn’t in the game, even though I never said that — then came back and hit me for… being unaware he was in the game.
I wouldn’t be ripping anybody else here for being a lil’ slow, know what I mean bud?
But thanks for the good laugh anyway.
