It’s been almost two years since a majority of the football-loving world first learned of the word “splenectomy,” thanks to the in-game destruction of Chris Simms’ insides. [Editor’s note: Seinfeld aficionados got acquainted with the term in the same episode where a Junior Mint made an unexpected journey.] And it’s been almost two years of uncertainty over whether he’d be healthy enough to play football again, and if so whether he’d be doing so in pewter. With Simms healthy, the Bucs saturated with quarterbacks and moving on, and final cuts looming, that uncertainty will soon be over.
Either the Bucs will trade Simms, or they’ll release him at the last minute before having to cut down to 53 players. And so this training camp and preseason becomes an audition in front of any team in need of a backup (or potentially starting) quarterback. Last night, as the Bucs played the Patriots, scouts from 20 teams were in attendance to see Phil’s son play.
Three of those teams came from north of the border — the Toronto Argonauts, the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers — but also in attendance were representatives from the Vikings, Cowboys, Colts, and Ravens. The Patriots, who are seeing how destitute they are behind Tom Brady, were surely taking a good look from the other sideline as well.
Simms went 2-for-4 for 24 yards in the game, and is 10-for-14 for 84 yards on the preseason.
The fact that the Colts were in attendance lends a little more credence to the increasing belief that Peyton Manning’s knee injury is more worrisome than they’ve led on.

Tom, apparently you missed Florio 101. There should be a link during the “the Bucs saturated with quarterbacks and moving on” with the ‘move on or move out’ clip.
PFT is disappointed and we’re expecting subscription refunds.

Regarding the Colts, who would you rather have as a backup, Sorgi or Simms? The answer is obvious to me. I’m still surprised the Dolphins didn’t make a move on Simms.

I’d like to see Chris Simms be a starter in the NFL.
Then see Major Applewhite step down from coaching at the University of Texas, fill in as the starter for Simms, be a much more productive QB than Simms and win the big games that Simms cannot, then see Simms be handed the starting job back based on name recognition and potential.

6-10 as a starter but they love “the gun”. factor out cadillac and simms is like a 3-13 qb. yes, lower than jo-ey.

Tom,
The article which you linked to states that though the Bears may be looking for a QB, they did not send a scout.

I think Simms would be an excellent backup to Peyton Manning. In fact, I think Simms’ game is perfect for that kind of offense. He’d certainly be an upgrade to whatever the heck they have backing up Peyton right now.

empty13,
Cadillac has been an absolute pass-dropping, east-west running, injury-prone bum since week 4 of the 2005 season. Considering Simms didn’t play until week 5, the only person Williams helped out was Brian Griese and his dishonorable performances in 2005. Simms went 6-0 against the NFC South alone in 2005 and can play QB in the NFL
bgman,
Simms’ biggest problem in college was that he actually tried to go through progressions and fire balls to his WR’s while Applewhite blindly heaved prayers/ducks that his excellent collegiate WRs hauled in. Applewhite got cut by the Patriots BEFORE training camp started when he came out… for one reason… he absolutely sucked, you can’t just heave prayers in the NFL, the DBs are too good.

@brasho,
Phil, is that you? Shouldn’t you be preparing to commentate(badly) a pre-season game?

If you mention the Colts and any of the following words: “QB” “pass” “offense” etc…then Florio will continue to go nuts with “Peyton Manning must be too injured to play” garbage. Ho-hum.

I am a little late to this party, but how have the Bears not tried to get Simms? Are they hoping he will be released? While we’re at it, how have the Bears not shown any interest in signing Culpepper? Wouldn’t he be an instant upgrade over Orton and Rex?

Most of us (Bear fans) think the Bears are interested. They probably feel like they already know Simms well enough and didn’t need to send a scout. Mike Florio was probably on target with this post:
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/08/18/nothing-unusual-about-scouting-presence-at-pats-bucs/
Having said that the Bears won’t over pay for Simms - not even a little. That’s not what they do. But assuming the other teams don’t do anything stupid, Simms might see the Bears as his best chance to eventually see the field. The Bears don’t go many years without getting to their third QB. And there’s always next year…

Tom, should you be writing about football without knowing anything about the scouting process? or anything about writing for that matter, since this newsflash was lifted from a Fort Myers publication for retirees, and no doubt planted there by Simms’ own publicist.
The only downside of the internet is the spawning of ridiculous rumors, such as the one that Simms is sought-after. Gimme a break.
