We reported earlier in the day that the Patriots had signed veteran safety John Lynch. Coach Bill Belichick thereafter said at a press conference that Lynch had not signed a contract.
It might have all been a matter of semantics, since Lynch is now signed, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.
Per Schefter, Lynch has inked a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
It’s the third career team for the nine-time Pro Bowler, who was a key member of the Buccaneers’ defense of the late ’90s and early portion of the current decade. After being cut by the Bucs, he spent four years with the Broncos.
Lynch is expected to be a situational player, and don’t be surprised if he lines up from time to time at linebacker.

John Lynch has been great through the years. He’s a Champion.
Even though he is a step slow now, he’s still got a great head for
the game, and he gives a great interview too…..

I like Lynch but I thought the Pats wanted to get younger.

This should come as no surprise to any NFL fan who follows the masterful workings of BB. He loves hard-working, intelligent veterans who deliver the goods. He wants better, not necessarily younger. So what if Lynch is used situationally? This is classic BB and a good move for Lynch if he’s interested in another ring. Pats are always legitimate SB contenders, and while I expect Broncos to have a better year than last, their chances are not nearly as good as NE.
Unless anyone thinks JL is still in it for the $$$! LOL!!!

He fills the hole that Tank Williams injury left very nicely for the Pats. This is the kind of move that is geared toward stopping the Colts and multiple wide receiver set offenses.

Didn’t he just bolt Denver because he didn’t want to be a “situational” player? Put the authorities on alert now bc he’s trying to steal a ring!!

This is a great addition to replace what the Pats were trying to do with Tank.He will be a situational player for certain schemes. Yes, the Pats are getting younger but sometimes,ie Junior Seau, Donte Stallworth you make decisions on what is best for the team for this season. He will probably play 15 plays a game & is a smart player who will contribute immediately.

The Colts would _love_ for Lynch to be put in coverage situations in multiple wide-receiver sets. His coverage skills were never the best, but the past couple of years they’ve gone really downhill.

The days of Lynch flying around deep downfield as an extra free safety (where he’d likely “get burnt”) are probably over. But as a hybrid SS/LB close to the line?
Yeah, he may still be a “situational player” with the Pats, but it’ll likely be different situations from those he was put in with the Broncos - situations that take better advantage of his current abilities - like reading offenses and anticipating their moves. Like Seau, he doesn’t need the step he may have lost if he knows exactly how he’s going to get into the backfield before the snap.

EXACTLY, Slant!
His quote when he left Denver was,”It just didn’t feel right.” Which most of us took to mean he wanted to be an every down player. Apparently, it just meant he wanted a quick ring before retirement. More power to ya, John, but save us the load of crap.
p.s. Not always a Shana-fan, but I have to give it to him for letting Lynch go in a classy way.

and a good move for Lynch if he’s interested
in another ring.
Junior Seau and Randy Moss where both interested
in a ring last year? What happened?
hahahahahahahahahahhahaha
Expect the Broncos to have a better year than last year??

Wingnut: Bumped my head with regards to what exactly? I know you despise the Pats, but do you honestly think the Broncos stand a better chance of making it to the SB than Pats?
Or, do you not think JL is intelligent? I know, Stanford is notorious for admitting retards…?
Or, maybe BB (yes, a cheater) has no personnel/football assessing skills at all…?
What?

Bellicheat is a horrible human being, it is hard for the press to protray him for anything but what he really is.
I love his camera presence during the 60 Minutes interview, he reminds me of a porn director, sleazy, underhanded, and totally lacking any morals and those are his good points.

All you patty fans. If you want to see class, see how Art Monk and Darrell Green went into the Hall of Fame. You wouldn’t know class if it hit your beat up olds sitting on blocks in your trashed front yaaad. They didn’t squeak out their super bowl wins and act like they were the greatest team ever. They won convincingly without cheating.

dude, seriously, a situational role player with the pats is night and day different than a situational role player with the broncos.
if you think a belichik defense is even in the same class as whatever-defensive-coordinator-shannahan-will-fire-as-a-scapegoat-this-year defense, you don’t know football.

Belichick wasn’t playing games with the media. Either he hadn’t yet passed the physical or the contract wasn’t yet approved by the league or signed. Somehow, I doubt that Lynch will be a coverage safety. It’s possible that Lynch wasn’t happy playing free safety for the Broncos when he is more suited to strong safety and situational linebacker.
