In response to the decision of Jets quarterback Brett Favre to go public regarding his private conversation with teammate Laveranues Coles, one league source thinks that Favre’s efforts will, at a minimum, jeopardize any trust that might have been established between the two players.
And we agree.
If Coles isn’t talking publicly about the switcheroo that resulted in Favre joining the Jets and Chad Pennington being booted out the door, the best strategy for cozying up to the guy probably doesn’t include going public regarding the contents of a discussion about Coles’ refusal to speak.
Coles easily could interpret Favre’s clumsy effort at breaking the ice, and Favre’s decision to then blab about it, as an insult. Especially since Coles clearly prefers at this point to deal with the situation privately.
And, arguably, Favre’s interpretation of Coles’ silence as a reluctance to not “say anything good about” Favre could be telling evidence that Favre had indeed become a full-blown narcissist.
As we see it, Coles’ silence isn’t about the fact that the team traded for Favre. It’s about the fact that the team rewarded Pennington’s loyalty and service by throwing him out the door. Favre likely is, in Coles’ eyes, the personification of that indignity. So Favre would be wise to tread lightly.
But we’ve learned of late that concepts like subtlety and discretion don’t reside in Favre’s personality. During his battle with the Packers, Favre was crowing to the media about all sorts of otherwise private conversations.
It’s not really anything new. Favre violated the players’ code three years ago with Javon Walker, pressuring him to abandon any intention of holding out for a new contract. (Walker caved, and then tore his ACL in Week One.)
If Favre had been a member of the Jets earlier this year when Coles was making noise about his own deal, we wonder what Brett would have said.
Coles probably does, too.

Not really a fumble, I would relate it more to throwing a pick 6 to lose a playoff game.

I was surprised when I read the initial article about Favre feeling the need to more or less talk for Coles. There’s a (good) reason why Coles isn’t talking to the media, and he felt he was able to talk to Favre, which resulted in Favre dragging that through the media as well. Coles is already visibly unhappy about the situation, and with this happening, I’d think that at the very least, Coles and Favre won’t be having too many ‘heart to heart’s from now until Favre retires, unretires, and then asks for his unconditional release at the end of the season.

Javon Walker is an FSU guy like Coles. Could be another reason Coles isn’t a big fan of Favre.

Of course this was bound to happen…..the fact that Coles didn’t come out and praise Lord Favre and line his walking path with rose petals means that Lord Favre must now take him apart publicly.
Could be good news for Dolphin fans as Coles might want to be reunited with Pennington at some point in the future.

I know Chad was your friend, but you got to get over it. Your making a hugh problem out of nothing and your starting a distraction in the locker room. Brett is a upgrade at QB and he will help you have a good year.

I wonder how long it will be until Coles goes to the media with the way he really feels about this situation rather than the way Favre talks about it. I look forward to reading that article. Favre has done nothing this offseason rather than go from a sure first bid hall of famer to a diva who came back to a team that will be lucky to go .500. Thank you Brett Favre for giving me football news to read the entire off season.

Brett Favre admitted after Wednesday morning’s Jets practice that his “arm is kind of dragging a bit.” ???????
Favre had indeed become a full-blown narcissist.
Hello Mangini, you don’t know what you got yourself into ?
I am going to enjoy thre trip.
Just when you thought the saga was over, x-superstar quarterback Brett Favre is back in the mix.

I think Brett is about to find out that dealing with the press is a bit different in NY than it was in Green Bay.
If this is the worse of it, Brett should count himself lucky.
I have a feeling there is a lot more of this to come.

I can’t wait till the season starts so that Florio can go back to giving us crappy fantasy football advise and stop playing amateur psychologist. I feel like at this point Favre could have a 3 word quote and it would still result in a 5 paragraph post here.

Favre will tear apart the Jets, without even trying. He is diva, a stupid divs, but a diva none the less.
Favre best watch, as they hit a lot harder in the AFC East than he might think.

Lets get real people. Coles is whining about the fact that his “boy” Chad P. was let go and clearly cannott get over it. Brett clearly is trying to extend an olive branch to Coles and who knows if it will come to anything. What is Coles going to do when Brett throws him a pass? Drop it because of the organizations decision to dump his friend? Brett doesnt need to tread on anything. If Coles doesn’t want to play with Brett, then im sure they will find someone who will. Coles shouldnt cut off his nose to spite his face. This is very childish..

Maybe Favre can offer to share his lunch with Coles. Or maybe he can make him a friendship bracelet. Maybe after practice they can get together and bake some muffins.
This constant monitoring of who is LC’s BFF is not newsworthy, interesting, or something that men should care about.
I can’t wait until the part of the season where guys talk about things like touchdowns and sacks and who got jacked up.

I think a lot of this ties into the fact that Lord Favre only won one championship.
He acts like he was part of a dynsasty but the truth of the matter is, Lord Favre wouldn’t know a dynasty if it slapped him across his unshaven face.

Favre is used to a wildly devoted fanbase that was willing to overlook many of his questionable actions. He hasn’t really had to answer for anything he’s done for a long time, and even though I think Favre’s a good guy, it’s never good when you’re given too much rope, no matter who you are. Things will be different in NY.

I am, after all, above anyone, for it is I, Lord Favre.
Hey Favre….You are no more important than any one individual in this league. The TRUE Favre is slowly staring to surface.

I really enjoyed reading this ‘report’. re-read the following:
“ONE LEAGUE SOURCE THINKS that Favre’s efforts will, at a MINIMUM, jeopardize any trust that MIGHT have been established between the two players.”
“the best strategy for cozying up to the guy PROBABLY doesn’t include”
“Coles EASILY COULD INTERPRET Favre’s CLUMSY effort at breaking the ice”
“IF Favre HAD been a member of the Jets earlier this year when Coles was making noise about his own deal, WE WONDER WHAT Brett WOULD have said.”
Understood that any of this is entirely possible, however, there APPEARS to be no journalistic integrity here (I am making an ASSUMPTION that this article is written with that intent!). The entire article is SUPPOSEDLY based on one league source’s opinion….however, 99% of this article APPEARS to be based on Florio’s hatred of the Jets.
SEEMS like fun!!!!!

Coles and Walker are two entirely different situations. Coles is a proven guy…at the time of Walkers hold out, Javon had one good year. I agreed with Favre …shut up and play… one year does not warrant a new contract! F%$kin rookies. I’m glad his greedy a$$ is out of Green Bay. Now look at him….was ready to retire….because he’s not who he thought he was(ala Dennis Green)

Hmmm… Favre, Primadonna? Noooo. Caught up in his own hype? Naaawww. Newsflash: For as good as Favre is at throwing the football, being a quarterback is about more than just that. It’s about having the trust of your teammates and the respect of your peers. Favre clearly cares about neither. All he cares about is his perception in the media. Win over the media, and you’ve won the world. Wrong. Right now, the Jets’ players are his world. This just goes back to all the mudslinging he tried to focus at Ted Thompson and the Packers in general. Not once did they give in and stoop to his level. This will only lead to even more of the homer, Favre-loyalists crossing the picket line into common-sense-ville.

Hey, let’s not forget that Brett is just another Jet who doesn’t want any extra attention, much like Roger “I am God”dell, also, hates the media.
On another note, we have to remember that Carson Palmer did the same thing this season with Chad Johnson. But Palmer is millions of miles away from the realm of Brett Favre’s ego.
