And we continue our ssssssslow climb in our annual preseason look-see at the worst-to-best NFL franchises.
At No. 25, we picked the Chicago Bears.
For No. 24, we’ll stay in the same division. The Green Bay Packers.
Just kidding. The Detroit Lions.
Last year, a 6-2 start melted into 1-7 over the second half of the year, with the only win down the stretch coming by five points at home against a pathetic Chiefs team.
But yet the annual cloud of optimism and big-talking has returned to Detroit. “This is the year,” they say. Eventually they’ll be right.
But if it’s this year, it’ll be a shock.
Rounding up a flock of Tampa rejects isn’t the way to improve the team, in our view. And so as Rod Marinelli prepares for his third season with the team, it looks like the same old stuff for a franchise whose fans have likely accepted the reality that the Lions and the Super Bowl are a combination that won’t happen for as long as the current ownership is in place.
But, as always, there’s hope. Calvin Johnson looks to be the real deal at receiver. Kevin Smith has real potential at running back. Of course, Jon Kitna is still the quarterback, but maybe Drew Stanton will get a shot this year.
The only question is whether it’ll be enough to cause this team to climb from 7-9 to maybe 9-7, and possibly to finagle a shot at a wild-card berth. We don’t suggest holding your breath. Or any other bodily functions.

Oh no. Say it ain’t so!!!!
Is there life after Mike Martz? We’ll see……
(Kitna is still a decent Emergency Backup QB in Fantasy Leagues. He will crank out some stats no matter the outcome of the game. At least he did, last year.)

They started with such promise last year that it kills me. I’m a Lion’s fan, and I want to blame Martz for the team’s meltdown last year. But there is always the chance that he wasn’t the problem, and that this year will, yet again, not be our year.
The best thing that happened to the Lions this offseason is that the curse of Bobby Layne has finally ended.

I just wonder how crazy/disgusting the pictures Matt Millen possesses of the Lions’ owner are to allow him to keep that job for so long.

It should have been pretty obvious what was going to happen last year after the Eagles put up 40 something points in the first half against them. What a pathetic defense!

Oh for (Rodney) Pete’s sake, the pussy cats have a better chance to win if they walk down to the local casinos. Last place in the NFCN with 5 wins. I can hear the cries now, “Bring back Fontes, Bring back Fintes.” It’s going to be a LONG season in Motown (as it always is).

I empathize with Lion fans.It is truly amazing how Millen keeps his job. In any other corporation in America today, he would have been collecting unemployment several years ago. His drafts are a joke, any idiot throwing darts could make better draft choices than Millen. My sympathies to Lions nation.

otoh, it could be that…
I just wonder how crazy/disgusting the pictures the Lions’ owner possesses of Matt Millen are to force him to stay on that job any more.

lewand is making some of the financial decisions and he never catches any blame. someone ought to look into that as well. btw, the fords are extremely happy that ford brings his auto world connections into the nfl because of the ad revenue.
ford seems to be happiest when the team goes 7-9 to 9-7, maybe with a playoff game occasionally, but not too many out-of-season expenses… he wants a team with local connections and an offensive splash. i wouldnt be too quick to blame all those offensive dud/bust pix on millen. i suspect rogers and maybe harrington were the old man’s picks.

also, look at the records of detroit’s first 8 opponents last year (year end records will do fine). even subtract out their record against the lions. 57-63. playoff teams: was and tb. and phi (and min, who they beat in det) were better teasm than daytwa.
then look at the records of their second half opponents. 73-47. this is a significant difference. playoff teams; gb (twice), dal, sd, nyg. and min and ari were better teams.
detroit was a so-so team. such teams are to be expected to finish 7-9. especially when they have a crappy defense that gets totally shredded by at least 5 teams in 6 games.

Everyone says: Fire Millen. I do agree, however, who are they going to replace him with. Or who will the league make them hire? Maybe they are better off????????
Millen is not doing this alone…. he needs to find better advisors, AND that care if the Lions win.
