New Steelers quarterback Byron Leftwich, who joined the team two days ago with no guarantee that he’d be anything other than the short-term backup to starter Ben Roethlisberger, might have taken a shot on Monday at quarterback Daunte Culpepper.
Both Leftwich and Culpepper came to Steelers’ training camp on Sunday, with the team planning to sign at least one of them. (There were indications that both could be added.) Culpepper reportedly opted against signing with the Steelers because he still wants to be a starter, and that he apparently was hoping to compete for the starting job in Pittsburgh.
Said Leftwich on Monday, according to the Washington (Pa.) Observer-Reporter, “Only a fool would come here believing you have a chance to start when you have [Ben Roethlisberger] here. They’ve got Ben here and Ben’s a hell of a quarterback.”
Rrrrrow.
Meanwhile, Charlie Batch could eventually be joining Culpepper in the ranks of the unemployed. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Leftwich could keep the No. 2 gig for the entire season.
“Byron was a No. 1 pick, the seventh overall in the draft,” quarterbacks coach Ken Anderson said. “He’s started in the league, won games in the league. We’re happy to have him here to kind of bail us out.”
One possibility would be to place Batch on injured reserve and to use Leftwich as the No. 2 and rookie Dennis Dixon as No. 3. The team apparently hopes to keep Dixon on the active roster, since attempting to put him on the practice squad would expose him to the waiver system.
But at this point it’s impossible to rule out the chance that the Steelers will conclude that Leftwich is a significant upgrade to Batch, and that the time has come to part ways with the Pittsburgh native who has happily served as an understudy for his entire time with the team.

I hope the Steelers are fair with Charlie. He’s been a solid backup for the past couple years.

A shame that Batch might go out this way. He always seemed like a decent QB when he got the chance to play.

I’M THE ULTIMATE JAGUAR FAN AND BYRON LEFTWICH IS A FREAKIN STATUE HE IS THE MOST ACCURATE QB I HAVE EVER SEEN THROW THE BALL AND HIS ARM STRENGTH IS GREAT BUT HIS MECHANICS ARE TERRIBLE IT TAKES HIM 3 SECONDS TO WIND UP HIS ARM AND MAKE A PASS DOWN FIELD BY THEN BOTH DEFENSIVE ENDS AND A DT HAVE GOTTEN TOO HIM AND RUNG HIS BELL PLUS HIS POCKET PRESENCE IS HORRIBLE…..

I hate that argument, he was a 1st round pick, he’s started, he’s won some games. A lot of QBs are in that category, including Mr. Culpepper. If that’s your argument, I guess you could settle for Tim Couch or Ryan Leaf as your #2.

The only thing in this article worth noticing is that a fellow NFL QB called out Culpepper for his stupidity. Seriously gotta be the dumbest guy in the NFL (or at least trying stupidly to get into the NFL). What moron thinks they can come in after training camp is half over and think they can start a quarterback controversey. Freaking stupid.

If Culpepper actually thought that he would have a chance to start in Pitt. then he is too stupid to even get the jab that Leftwich gave him.

batch did ok in a difficult situation in detroit, actually. he isnt anything more than a hand-it-off and chuck it deep qb, but he took pretty good care of the ball too.
sometimes guys without “all that official talent” end up being better qbs overall because they play within themselves and the system.

I don’t like the Steelers, but I gotta say that in the few times I’ve seen him step in and relieve Ben, he has been pretty solid. I remember my Packers played them w/o Ben in ‘05 and Batch played a pretty solid game to lead Pittsburgh to a win. I wouldn’t mind him being a back-up on my team. He’s much better now than he was with Detroit.

As a jags fan I will always root for Big Byron. One of the top ten pure passers in the league if you give him a quality OL and some receivers that can actually get some separation. He had a few come from behind wins in Jax and I’ll never forget his last second TD pass to Wilford to beat the Bills. Dude can play some football, I don’t know what all the hate is about. Roethlisberger now has the 2nd strongest arm on the team and might be the 2nd best qb. It seems to me Leftwich usually came out the victor when these two met head to head in the NFL. But what else is new when the Jaguars play the steelers? Good luck BL, Culpepper can’t hold your jock.

There is a reason why Leftwich is a back up now.
Chas Batch is good, but he always was sort of fragile in DET.
the Steelers have usually looked out for guys who gav ea lot to the team, usually.
But with Tomlin, who the hell knows.

chumpslacks???? What a perfect name for a perfect idiot! Frankenstein was more mobile the Lefty. You better get out of the sun down there in Florida cause it is seriously affecting you thinking. Big Ben QB rating last year was only second to (maybe you heard of him) Tom Brady or do you think Lefty is better than him too? Second that means better than Peyton in case you have as much trouble with math as rating QB’s.

Um, uh, hello? Leftwich better than Roethlisberger? Are you serious with this or just retarded? BR career stats include a QB rating of 92.5 with 84 TDs to 54 Ints with a Super Bowl. While Byron Leftwich has a QB rating of 79.7 and 52 TDs to 38 Ints. Now when you realize that he was drafted the year before Ben and you qucikly realize that he isn’t half to QB Ben is. Not half. Not even close…

Someone once said “a lawyer (or lets say agent, too), who represents himself has a fool for a client.”
So yes, Culpepper is a fool. He keeps turning down offers in hopes that the planets allign and he gets to start somewhere. He’s washed up and needs to realistically any table scraps thrown at him.

I’d consider Dennis Dixon. I think of how many times Big Ben got toppled in recent years and then I think of what Byron looks like with no protection. Yeeesh. I think Batch is a better QB. Byron throws missles. Low tight spirals (none of that Matt Leinart wobble)that are usually on target, but prone to tips. But he refuses to change his mechanics and the vast majority of his passes have a pitcher’s windup that starts from his hip. He fits the offense in that he came from a run first strategy, but defenses know how to scheme against HIM. Not the offense. Just him to make it even more difficult to score points.

Yes, Dante Culpepper thought he was going to Pittsburg with a chance to compete for the starting job, then he just doesn’t get it.
But who knows why he really went there. Maybe he thought that if he looked good enough in tryouts Mike Tomlin may let other coaches in need of a QB know that Culpepper looked sharp (coaches do talk, though they keep some stuff back from rivals teams). Or maybe he thought that if Leftwhich didn’t look very good, that if Roethlisberger did go down early in the season, Tomlin would call him back to take over as starter.
I agree that the being his own agent thing is really stupid, and has cost him a lot more money that it has saved him in agent fees. But holding out for a chance to start instead of taking a back-up job isn’t a bad idea, and could help him make a lot more money next year.
If teams are desperate enough to call back Vinny Testerverde, then someone could use Culpepper. And if he could get a 1-year incentaive-laden deal and could come back with a big season playing for a better team than the Raiders or Dolphins, then he could parlay it into a bigger contract next year.

Apparently Daunte has now scheduled workouts with the Patriots, Colts, and Cowboys hoping they’ll give him what Pittsburgh wouldn’t… More to come…
