As we continue to gather more information about the June 2008 restructuring of Reggie Bush’s contract, we’ve learned that the move was primarily motivated by the team’s desire to clear cap space for contracts that have since been given to receiver Marques Colston and defensive end Will Smith.

Bush didn’t get much if anything by way of new money out of the deal.  He did, however, get some future money in hand now.

And so this move had nothing to do with locking up Bush.  The team was going to exercise the buy-back in Bush’s deal at some point over the next two years.  They did it now to create cap room in order to keep some of their other players.
