Rookie QB Matt Ryan had an impressive showing in a 20-17 loss to the Jaguars.

“I thought Matt passed the test in terms of poise and execution,” coach Mike Smith said. “I thought for the first time in an NFL game he was very impressive.”

Said Ryan, “The O-line played well, we made some plays and the receivers made some catches.”

QB Joey Harrington looked the best of the Falcons’ backups, leading the team to 10 third-quarter points.

Asked why he didn’t try a game-tying field goal late in the fourth quarter, Smith said, “There is no need in the preseason for guys to play for overtime.”

Rookie LT Sam Baker showed the poise of a veteran.

Starting RT Tyson Clabo picked up a personal foul on the third play of the game when he threw a Jaguar to the ground well after the play ended.

DE John Abraham left the game with a minor foot injury.

The punt return job is up for grabs.
