When the Miami Dolphins released their first depth chart of training camp, coach Tony Sparano insisted that no one should read anything into the fact that Josh McCown was listed as the starting quarterback.
Apparently he meant it. The Dolphins’ preseason opener is tonight, and McCown isn’t even expected to take the field.
Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald reports that Sparano has told second-year quarterback John Beck that he’ll play the first and the third quarters, while rookie Chad Henne will play the second and fourth quarters.
That might seem to indicate that McCown is on the way out as a result of front office boss Bill Parcells acquiring one of his personal favorites, Chad Pennington. But Darlington reports that Sparano actually told the quarterbacks of his plans on Thursday, before Pennington became a Dolphin.
And there are also indications that, in reality, the odd man out in the Dolphins’ quarterback derby will be Beck. Pro Football Weekly quotes an unnamed team source saying that Beck, last year’s second-round pick, is in serious jeopardy of losing his job.
“They’re going to give John two more weeks to show what he can do, but if he continues his awful play, he’s out of here,” the source said. “He’s been terrible throughout camp, and there’s no way four quarterbacks are going to make the final roster. He’s not one of Parcells’ guys, and they have no loyalty to him.”
Pennington is the favorite to become the starter, and Henne, as a second-round draft pick who was chosen by the current regime, is certainly safe. But it’s between McCown and Beck for the third and final quarterback roster spot. Tonight McCown will watch from the sidelines, quietly hoping Beck falters.

I think Beck is done for in Miami anyway. I think the Dolphins are hoping he shows just enough in this preseason game to drum up some trade interest.

Who are you trying to kid? They had Pennington locked up within hours of the Favre trade announcement, so of course they knew that McClown would be out.
Okay, well, let’s hope so because I think they need to keep Beck on. Quit effing with his release. He’s been as effective this week as McCown. I see no operative difference between the two at this point - except that McCown has reached his potential and Beck, perhaps, has not.

i think the actual consensus is that ALL our qb’s have been bad throughout camp, and that in fact Beck looked much better the past week than the first week, and better than the others, while McCown started to falter and was the one who actually looked “terrible” this past week. Henne meanwhile has been consistent, but not great, as to be expected by a rookie. I just want the best man to win, whoever it may be, but there has definitely been a media bias against Beck. I’m just surprised no one has connected it back to Brady Quinn yet.. Florio you want to take the honors on that?

Parcells doesn’t try to rebuild by going young and sitting through two 3-13 seasons. He cuts the bait on who he thinks isn’t worth keeping and finds guys he feels can transform the team into a winner almost immediatly. Pennington is much better than anybody else they had. Henne isn’t ready to be the backup - so THAT’S why they would keep McCown over Beck. Just because everybody thinks Beck has this upside (which is debtable) and McCown doesn’t isn’t a reason to make Beck the backup and cut McCown. If Parcells thinks McCown gives the team the best chance to win if Pennington went down and thinks Beck is worthless he will cut him and hand the reigns over to Henne as the QB of the future.

Not playing McCown is a great idea when you’re going to trade him away. Hide how bad he really sucks.

My question here is who the source is. Is somebody really going against Bill Parcells and company and their “keeping things quiet” policy? Why would a “team insider” give out information like this?

Beck will be among the first round of cuts. Who would trade for him?
He has been terrible, the whole time he has been with the Fins.

A “team source” who refers to the team as “they” is not a team source.
