Once the news broke of the trade of Brett Favre to the Jets, our friends at SportingNews.com asked for an item breaking down what the move means for Favre’s new team.

Yeah. I wouldn’t say that the addition of Favre instantly makes the Jets guaranteed playoff contenders. It gives them more potential, but . . .
It seems to me that the Packers’ success of the past couple years is due to a gradual accumulation and maturation of young talent and the ability of the coaching staff to mold a cohesive team out of that young talent and solid veterans (particularly on defense). The result is a team with no particularly weak squads that more consistently executes well thought out game plans - plans that productively channeled Favre’s tendency to improvise while minimizing the damage that those improvisations sometimes cause.
While the Jets have certainly upgraded their talent mix in critical areas, they still have some questionable squads, especially on defense (IMHO). Their main challenge, as always with the Jets it seems, is to get a cohesive effort and consistent execution out of the offense.
Favre is certainly capable of rallying an offense around him which is what he brings to the table as much as his playing talent. If he does, and the Jets get a couple of breaks and keep all their critical players healthy, they could snag a wild-card spot and probably even advance at least one round. But if everything doesn’t go exactly right, they could miss the post-season by a whisker. In that event, I wouldn’t lay all the blame on Favre.
This season, you Jets fans are going to have to exercise extraordinary and uncharacteristic patience. You have a decent team made better by the addition of Favre, but there are still some other bugs yet to be worked out.

Florio, you’re right. The Patriots, Chargers, Colts, Jaguars, AFC North Champ, and one other team should make the playoffs. The Jets would have to contend with Pittsburgh/Cleveland division loser, Houston, Tennessee and Denver for one of the two last slots. Maybe that easy schedule gets it for them. But that defense is still pretty bad.

Pastabelly, I agree with you… except for that last selection for the two last slots. I’m a Broncos fan down to my predominantly-orange core, and I don’t see any way we’re doing more than 6-10 realistically this year. I want to be optimistic, but with a withered defense, an oddball offense (now short its best reciever for three games, including two against division rivals)… 8-8 would be a good thing at this point.
I’d say Pats, Chargers, Colts, Jaguars, Cleveland, Houston, and the last one is either Pittsburgh or maybe the Jets if they really work at it.

Having Brett play for the Jets gives them a major shot
in the arm of Football adrenalin! Its too early to tell of
how long it may take for the Jets and Brett to get it all
together. They will probably do well this year. I’m still too bumbed over Brett retiring and finally leaving the Pack to think about anything else. I may have to become a Brett the Jet fan second to being a Packer fan - just because of what he brings to the game personally. When he makes his 1st long touchdown….it will be tough!!!

I agree Favre is an upgrade over Pton if he can get the offseason behind him, dig into the playbook and actually prepare. If he doesnt do those things, he will not be an upgrade.
I see NYJ going 2-4 maybe 3-3 in division. 2-2 against the AFC west. 2-2 against the NFC west. and 1-1 against the Bengals & Titans.
7-9, maybe 8-8.

As soon as the Jets ownership gave MangIdiot their “vote of confidence” he knew the clock was ticking on his football career. After all, the only coaches who get votes of confidence are the ones that NEED a vote of confidence.
Following a 4-12 season in which multiple players successfully “blackmailed” the coach and organization to trade or extend them and the owners were forced to attempt to stop the bleeding with their announcement, both MangIdiot and Tannenbaum abandoned an approach of building for the future and dropped $112 million NOW on such gems as Damien Woody ($25 million).
Will it all payoff? MangIdiot better hope so. This “cannonball” has the potential to be a lead zeppelin.

will be comtenders this
year b/c not only favre
but an improved line,
some experienced defensive
players AND another really
good addition at te.
and whoever thinks the
jags will be contenders
this year im sorry but
the o needs to be able
to pass more efficiently
they are too 1d right now.

Brett Favre, Alan Faneca and Damien Woody are all past their primes. These signings only help them in the short term.
