Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that veteran quarterback Chad Pennington is expected to be cut in order to create salary cap space for the arrival of Brett Favre.
Pennginton’s release would instantly free up $6 million in 2008 cap room.
And Pennington has every right to be pissed off. He was a good soldier in the offseason, not bitching about the fact that he had no real job security.
As we wrote for SportingNews.com earlier this year: “On one hand, it’s odd that any pro athlete would behave this way. On the other hand, it’s refreshing. Pennington has a contract and is respecting that contract. Sure, the Jets can string him along for the entire offseason. Yeah, he’d make more money and have a better chance to start if he were traded to, say, any of the four teams in the NFC North.”
Now that Pennington is poised to hit the market, perhaps one of those four teams in the NFC North is precisely where he’ll land.

chad has no right to be pissed about anything. he was paid like a top 5 QB and pocketed an ungodly amount of money - for what, 3 playoff wins?

The ultimate scenario is if Pennington starts for the Vikings in week one and kicks their ass, and then Rodgers gets hurt and goes on IR….I would laugh my ass off

As a lifelong Packers fan, I can conclude only one thing - Ted Thompson is Satan.

Pennington has never gotten a fair shake in New York. The guy is severely under-rated. The issues with his arm strength are completely over-blown. I hope he goes to some place where he can get a decent shot without having to worry about getting crucified in the rags.

This is the one thing in this whole saga this Jets fan is upset about.
Chad’s a great guy and QB. I hope he had lots of success wherever he lands.
I know the business of it doesn’t work as well, but couldn’t they cut Clemens instead! I want to still be able to get use out of my #10 jersey.
And now I have to buy a #4 jersey too!

Chad goes to miami. His job will be to handoff, throw checkdowns/screens, and throw bombs. He’ll do it in an offense he knows and excelled in. How many times did Miami fans have to see Pennington to Chrebet for a first down.

As much as I despise the Jets, Chad really does seem like a good guy.
Now the Jets replaced him with an over-rated cry-baby that gets a little chubby whenever he throws another pick! It’s perfect!
Good job Man-tard!
Good Luck Chad.

I see Chad being in pretty high demand. He is a talented player, but more importantly a great teammate. He can step in as a starter in a bad QB situation - Chi, Min, Mia - or be an excellent backup on a top team - NE to be reunited with his old college teammate.

Pennington should go right to Minnesota. The Vikings will win NOTHING with Tavaris Jackson. What an awful quarterback.

I’m still hoping that the Jets get a late-rounder for Pennington.
Pennington is a team player and will put out 100% wherever he goes. Given this, it’s not far-fetched for a team that wants him to offer a 6th or 7th rounder to secure his services.

I like Pennington, don’t get me wrong. But what the Vikes need is a guy with a strong arm that can stretch the field with deep throws to Berrian. I am not sure if Chad has the arm we need.
Would have felt more comfortable getting Garcia if Favre went to the bucs. Oh well…

The good thing for Chad in all this is that he will have plenty of options on where *he* wants to go.
Personally, I’d love to see him land in Dallas, he’d make a great backup. But that’s completely wishful thinking on my part. Most likely, I see him going to Miami, possibly the Chiefs due to his ties with Herm Edwards.

Chad Pennington- ALL CLASS. Just ask Kellen Clemens, Vinny Testeverde, and any NFL player. Chad will land on his feet because he has always done the right thing and said the right thing. I was at a Jets-Giants pre season game in Chad’s first year, and he was so excited to be there that he was waving a towel while standing on the bench during a fourth qtr winning drive. He will be a great coach someday. He is a great student of the game. A Rhode Scholar.
Good luck Chad!!!
