The New York Jets, as expected, have released quarterback Chad Pennington.
“I have all the respect in the world for Chad as a person and a player,” G.M. Mike Tannenbaum said in a team-issued statement. “We have accomplished a lot of great things with Chad, including winning playoff games, which is very hard to do. He gave his heart and soul to this organization for a long, long time. I really appreciate everything he has done.”
“I appreciate everything Chad Pennington has given to the Jets organization,” said Chairman/CEO Woody Johnson. “He was a part of my first draft as an owner in 2000 and has exemplified nothing but class both on and off the field. I wish him, Robin, Luke and Cole my very best.”
Pennington was due to earn a base salary of $6 million in 2008, but if he hadn’t won the starting quarterback job he likely would have been asked to take a pay cut before the start of the reason, at which time the full amount of the base salary would have become essentially guaranteed. He’ll now hit the market in search of his next NFL team after spending eight years with the Jets.
It remains to be seen whether the sudden departure of Pennington creates problems in the locker room. Players like receiver Laveranues Coles, who is a close friend of Pennington’s, might not be happy about this — and Coles won’t be afraid to say so.
It also remains to be seen whether the decision to pay Favre a whopping $12 million for what could be a one-year rental creates further acrimony between the organization and guys like tight end Chris Baker, who has been trying in vain to get the team to make good on a supposed promise to re-do his deal.

No offense to Chad, but I would think guys like Coles would be thrilled to have someone of Favre’s caliber coming to the team. Favre tore it up last year with some pretty good pass-catchers, and I think Coles and Cotchery will have some of the best numbers of their careers this year. And heck, Baker might have have a great year with Favre and could end up getting paid more if he puts up gaudy numbers himself this year.

Pennington is better than the starters on at least four teams that come to mind: SF, MIAMI, CHI, and MIN. My guess is he’s probably better than the starters in BALT, OAK, and ATL, too, but I doubt they will go after him.
I wonder, though, if Manning is more injured than the Colts let on, if they would go after him. If I were Dungy and knew Manning might be out more than a game or two, I would go get Pennington right now as insurance.

I hear Pennington is upset…but like tossing a football more than 40 yards, apparently the weak-armed QB is also incapable of throwing a tantrum.

It also remains to be seen whether Florio can write one article about the Jets without taking letting his Patriot colors shine through.
Dear Florio,
I am amused to see how you can always tell players that they should honor the contracts they signed except when it suits your own hidden agenda…….which just happens to be bashing the Jets

How funny would it be to see Chad go to Miami and outplay Favre this season? I would laugh my @$$ off. Chad leads Miami to the playoff (at the only place he can go in and start). BF struggles with his new situation…hilarious. Big bonus for Miami, as Chad knows the AFC East defenses…great mentor, and better human being.

It’s win or bust for Mangini this season.
Woody Johnson, the team owner with the porn-star name, might have given his word that Mangini would return next year no matter what happens in the coming season. Nonetheless, it is conceivable Mr. Johnson might reverse that position if the Jets fail to deliver the goods with Brett Favre at quarterback.

Thank you New York from saving the Bucs the circus that the coming year will be for your team. Week 1 you can beat the mullets but week 2 and 3 after Favre tosses 6-7 ints, it’s going to be a train wreck.

Chad is a very smart QB who handles the pressure well. He deserves fans that will not cheer when he gets hurt. He would be a great back up to Brady if he just wanted to get a ring and be part of a winning team.

With all due respect to Chris Baker, who is a solid but far from spectacular NFL tight end, paying him an average of $1.65m per year than as opposed to paying $12m to a legitimate home run hitter who is being billed as someone who can put the team over the top - even if only for one year - is a totally different situation. Considering Favre’s history with his tight ends and the winning potential he brings to the field week in and week out, Baker and anybody else who might gripe should shut their mouths and get in line, because if things work out well they’ll get paid. Anybody familiar with the misery that is this franchise, juxtaposed against the team they share a stadium with who happen to be defending world champs, knows this was the only move they could make.

The injuries have taken a toll on his arm. But I tell you what no one could ever doubt his courage or will. The fact he was able to stick around as long as he did is a testament to that. I bet one day he will make a heck of a coach.

Can Florio post his favorite team on the site? With all the Jet hate, it has to be the Pats or the Fins. The end paragraph in all his Jet posts is a shot at the team or Mangini.

Before all the hate that Florio has tossed the Jets’ way, I couldn’t have given a rat’s a$$ about the team. But just because Mike has to go out of his way to denigrate them, I will be a Jets fan this year.
Truly shameful.
