Jets quarterback Brett Favre, in his first appearance since 1991 as a member of a team other than the Packers, proclaimed “I’m not a traitor” during a press conference at Cleveland Browns Stadium, conducted prior to the Jets preseason opener against the Browns.
Still, addressing for likely the last time (until he writes a book on the matter) the ugly divorce with his former employer, Favre acknowledged that, regarding the split, “We’re probably both at fault.”
Regarding his current mindset, Favre said that he’d borrow a phrase from the Packers: “We’re moving forward.”
Favre also talked about G.M. Mike Tannenbaum’s dogged recruitment of the veteran quarterback, and Favre mentioned that Bucs coach Jon Gruden was trying to get him to pick Tampa, too. (Jeff Garcia just threw a shoe at the wall.)
A couple of readers have opined to us that Favre’s body language suggests that he might not have completely bought into the move, and that maybe he’s now trying to justify the move in order to avoid looking foolish for doing something he really didn’t want to do.
Said one reader, “He wouldn’t even put the damn Jets jersey on when he left. He hemmed and hawed about being in N.Y. and leaving Green Bay. All this proved is he has a huge ego and a below average I.Q.”
Said another reader, “He has the taste of a spoiled relationship in his mouth. Rather than take as much time as he needed to make the decision of what to do next, he got together with this next girl and decided she was his girlfriend within 36 hours. This guy looks shell-shocked, and ‘convinced’. Like the type of ‘convinced’ one is when they’ve made a major purchase and now they have to defend that purchase to somebody else.”
PFT Planet, have at it.

It was obvious why he didn’t put on the Jets jersey. Did you see how small that thing was!?? Damn near the narrow-est jersey I ever saw. It was plainly clear that it didn’t fit Brett. It looked like a teenager couldnt fit into it.
Stop with the Jets nonsense Florio….

As far as the relationship metaphor, you can’t take your time and completely get over your recently-ex-lover when training camps are already underway.

This is what happens when there is a combination of a huge ego, bad advisors, and too much pride. He could have swallowed it, and he could have come back to the packers, but now he’ll end his career worse than the interception to the Giants in the NFC championship. How about ending your career as the patriot/AFC punching bag instead? This is so going to be a train wreck, and Mangini probably will be unemployable as a snitch, unless Al Davis hires him, lol.

I can see it already. Favre already misses the Packers and wishes he could be back with them, causing trouble for the Jets. Meanwhile, Rodgers will get hurt in training camp, the Packers will talk to Favre, apologize for cheating on him, and say they want him back. GM Thompson will send a first-rounder to the Jets to get him back, and everyone will live happily ever after!

I don’t know if he was unhappy, but he looked almost defeated as if the whole process took a lot out of him. Reports were that he didn’t want to play for the Jets. So it could be he isn’t really happy to be in New York.
You gotta wonder where his head is at after this month-long fight with the Packers though.

The “spoiled relationship” comment is right on. Not only did he shack up with the next girl who would have him, he settled for the fat girl with a moustache who he always thought he was too good for. Then, as his options ran out, he convinced himself that the girl somehow looks like Jessica Alba. Yes, Jets fans, sorry, but your franchise is the equivalent of a fat girl with a moustache.

He definitely looked shell shocked and not convinced that he was happy to be a Jet. That was totally obvious to me after watching him for 16 years and all of his press conferences. At one point he also started to bust out tears, but held them back when referring to playing in Green Bay.
My guess is that this is a one year relationship with the Jets based on his body language and the things he said.

Hey Mr. Mike,
I thought Brett was cool. He was strong. He didn’t cry. But I want to get back to Ted Thompson for a minute.
I thought it was really weak that TT put Coach Mike out there to say all the “bad guy” stuff while he hid in the background. They actually brought Brett to Green Bay to have one sit down meeting. Then Ted pushed Mike McCarthy out there to say “Brett’s not gonna work. He’s not where the team is. It’s going to be a problem.”
Nobody seems to have commented much on that. But again, Ted seem to have fouled the situation up, then pushed everybody else out front to deal with the press and the public. The Coach hasn’t been driving this process all off season. It’s Thompson that fouled it up.
But he wasn’t man enough to stand out there and tell the public what he was trying to do. Disrespect for the Player and Team Legacy. Bad succession planning from a Player Personnel stand point. Bad Fan Relations. But he deflected the attention and got some decent picks in return. The Pack ends up looking inept.
I’ll give him a D minus overall….. If Rodgers bombs, that will be an F on the sliding scale.

“Dogged recruitment?” uh oh….anyone care to place a bet that Brett doesn’t last a week in New York? Perhaps he should have spent another day on his tractor to sort it all out. As for those who think this makes the lowly Jets a contender in any way. I have a list of AFC teams that beg to differ. Jaguars, Colts, Chargers, Houston, Titans, and a this team from New England that’s pretty good. Simply put, unless tragedy strikes and a lot of it, the Jets will not be anywhere near the Playoffs, even with the ‘Ol Gunslinger”. Hmm I wonder how those 2 Dolphin ganes will go down if Chad is QB….

What kind of a man plays the best part of his career with one team and then sells out to play probably one more year with another team?
No class, favre. No class.
What kind of team lets the QB that got them to the NFC championship game go to another team when he is clearly better than any other QB that they have?
No clue, green bay. No clue.

I always knew Favre’s “legacy” would someday have to adjust to reality. Just like any financial market going through a bubble, at some point it has to come back to earth. The man never justified any of the stuff people say about him, and now he’s about to destroy his image in the worst possible media market for an overpaid, overhyped superstar.
Congrats Brett, not only will you tarnish your overhyped career by throwing 50+ INTs a season, you’ve already tarnished your relationship with the fans in Green Bay - the only people who, in 10 years, will still think you were as great as John Madden does.
Brett Favre… truly one of the most overhyped players of all time, a mediocre quarterback who played a lot of games (the Cal Ripken Jr of football), lost a ton of playoffs due to stupid passing decisions, won a single SuperBowl… none of it is that impressive. In my mind, he’s Trent Dilfer in a small town that everyone wants to love.

The guy’s life has been a rollercoaster for the past month, not to mention how hectic the last 24 hours must have been.
Were the Jets his first choice…NO. He wanted to play in the NFC north so he could stick it to the Pack twice a year. He’d be lying if he said the Jets were his first choice. Give the guy a break and lay off the Jets.
