Coach Rod Marinelli wants the Lions to emulate the Giants’ approach.
Says Marinelli of his defensive line, “I look at 10, 11 guys out there and they’ve all got good motors and are smart and hungry. It’s just going to be a good, tough competition all the way through.”
LB Buster Davis has been cleared to play after suffering a concussion.
Dan Orlovsky and Drew Stanton will battle it out for the No. 2 quarterback position.
Said Orlovsky, “If I’m going good enough to be what I think I can be — a starter in this league — it’s going to happen by me going out and playing ball. If I’m good enough, I’m good enough. If I’m not, I’m not.”
Orlovsky becomes an unrestricted free agent after the season.
First-round pick Gosder Cherilus is behind veteran George Foster for the right tackle spot.
Starting LT Jeff Backus hopes to get plenty of preseason reps.
Says receivers coach Shawn Jefferson of WR Devale Ellis, “This kid is quick and fast and can play the receiver position.”
The remaining players on the physically unable to perform list are close to returning.

Wow, Shawn Jefferson’s a WR coach? I never knew! Also, this makes me feel old.

Gosder Cherilus better be the starting RT at the beginning of the year.
You don’t draft an OL in the 1st round to have him sitting on the bench.
