In an unusual move, Bucs G.M. Bruce Allen met again with the media on Thursday regarding the Bucs’ pursuit (or lack thereof) of former Packers quarterback Brett Favre.
In an earlier session, Allen was evasive and standoffish, creating the sense that the Buccaneers made no effort to work out a deal with Green Bay.
This time, Allen admitted that the team was given the issue serious consideration. “We were receptive to hearing what they wanted to do,” Allen said, according to the St. Petersburg Times. “I’m not going to say I wasn’t interested in Brett Favre. Yes, I was interested.”
Allen still insists that no offer was made for Favre, which contradicts published reports that an offer was indeed on the table. And Allen says that the Bucs weren’t given a chance to match the package that the Jets put together.
Predictably, Allen says that the Bucs wouldn’t have matched the offer, if they’d been given a chance to do so.
As Stephen Holder of the Times points out, Allen’s unusual second session likely is the direct result of Allen’s poor performance earlier in the day. “As for why Allen chose to do a second batch of interviews, it’s fair to say the Bucs were not pleased with the way Thursday morning’s interview played out,” Holder writes. “It was contentious, at times, largely because of reporters’ frustration with Allen’s evasiveness. This evening’s chat was perhaps an effort to make things right.”

I think Allen re-addressed the media because Favre through Gruden under the bus! In his press conference he said something about Gruden making a very compelling or attractive pitch to come to Tampa Bay

Disappointed? Why would that be? It’s funny not only does Gruden get contradicted by the GM but he gets rolled by Brett Favre during his intro with the Jets.
I wonder what the over/under would be for total cuss words spoken today by Gruden.

I tried finding the article, but conveniently ESPN took them all off their website. They had several articles posted up that the Packers had “asked” for a 3rd round draft pick with the potential for 2nd round status and Brian Griese from the Bucs. Never once mentioned that the Bucs having offered anything.
Again, the Bucs were ASKED by the Packers for the pick and player; NEVER OFFERED anything in response.

You can pin the blame on the media in Florida and ESPN. They were feeding off every little rumor and gave the impression that Favre was a lock to go to Tampa. C’mon, did you really expect the Packers to give Favre to another team in the same conference? The same team that they would face in week four? I’m sure they approached the Bucs with a request for Griese and a conditional pick (this was reported by a poster on Pewter Report’s message board very early yesterday), but I think Tampa was listening to offers, and probably offered a Plummer like deal at best. They could afford to absorb the contract, but they weren’t going to risk losing a high pick, especially since it’s no lock that Favre will play out his contract, and as the days pass by it appears that Favre is more for himself than he is for any team.
Take a look at Bruce Allen’s trade history with the Bucs. He has had consistent success in dealing in the lower rounds of the draft, and I think the team felt that the potential for the pick to turn into a first or second was not worth taking a chance on Favre - even if it meant reducing the chances of a Super Bowl win. If you don’t believe that, take a look at the teams bare cupboards after they won the Super Bowl in 2002; they were down two first round picks for Keyshawn and lost a bounty of picks for Gruden. Coupled with the idiocy (draft and contract wise) of Rich McKay and you had a team in the basement with aging players and no high level draft picks to replenish the talent.
I wouldn’t be shocked if Tampa takes a look at Pennington. I don’t know if he fits in the system, but he’s a QB and he might be available for a bargain price. My personal opinion has the team bringing him in to see what he has before he signs with a team like Minnesota or Miami. We’ll see…

Allen made the smart move in not trading for Favre. In acouple of weeks when the season starts evrybody will be ready to go and everybody will be in Garcia’s corner rootin for him to bring the Super Bowl trophy back to the Bay Area to get a tan on the gulf coast. GO BUCS!

Allen was evasive in his first interviews?
How so, they only asked him one question over and over, he gave the same answer every time but it wasn’t what they wanted to hear so kept asking it
What offer did you make Bruce?
We never made an offer.
What deal were you offering the Packers?
We never made an offer.
Is it true you offered Brian Griese as part of the deal for Favre?
We never made an offer.
So Bruce did you make an offer?
If anything it says alot about Bruces patience with the local village idiots that have managed to worm their way into press jobs. I really wish he had called them out on their false reporting of a done deal.

Why would anyone believe that Bruce Allen would be upfront, open and tell the truth? He has no history of that. It’s not in his nature. The man is scum.
