At a time when the New York Jets are reportedly sniffing around quarterback Brett Favre, coach Eric Mangini is yet unable to distinguish between the two in-house candidates for the starting job.
Mangini says he doesn’t know whether Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens will get the nod in the preseason opener on Thursday night against the Browns.
The third-year head coach plans to review the situation with his staff, and with G.M. Mike Tannenbaum.
All ties presumably would go to Clemens, since he was drafted by Tannenbaum and Mangini. Pennington, in contrast, is a holdover from the prior regime. But if Pennington wins the job, it could be a sign that Mangini and Tannenbaum appreciate that, in the short term, winning football games is more important than proving that “their guy” can get it done.

Why would they care about winning a preseason football game? The only way you ‘win’ in a preseason game is when you learn more about the players on your team.

HUH!!!!!! Some ridiculous assumptions posted at times….
They already know what Pennington can do and know he has “limitations”.. If the race is close you give it to the younger guy with a stronger arm PERIOD… It has nothing to do with “their Guy” or anything else….

I understand it’s hard for Mangini and Tannenbaum to decide, as this will be the last time they ever have to worry about making a Pre-Season coaching decision.

Pennington didnt “get it done” last year either…correct me if i’m wrong but didn’t Jet fans openly cheer when Chad hurt his ankle last season in hopes of seeing Clemens?
The Jets wont be relevant as long as Tangini’s incompetence is at the helm…between the “snitching”, recordbreaking, headscratching, deals they give to their rookies, and the mistreatment of the veterans it doesnt take a genius to see why they suck.

nimbus, somebody wanna explain to Brett Favre that the world revolves around the sun, not him?
I do think that Mangini will be fair in making this decision. He knows his ass is on the line if they don’t do well this year, and judging by the camps so far, Pennington’s the guy who puts them in the best position to win games right now. He’ll worry about proving “his guy” can get it done after he secures his job as head coach. Paycheck before pride.

Clemens has a stronger arm than Pennington, as do some of the contributors to this forum, but the younger quarterback also seems to have more trouble reading defenses. He’s reportedly been an interception machine throughout much of training camp.
If the Jets have little room for error, which they do, they’d be better off with Pennington at quarterback. He won’t make the big plays, but he’ll be much less likely than Clemens to throw the ball into the waiting arms of opposing defenders.

Hey Florio….post rumors and news and you will continue to be great. Tannenbaum and Mangini may or may not be great…tbd but you write as if you have head coaching/GM insights….you don’t and as well as a bunch of sportswriters should stick to what you are good at. And you are good at posting the rumors and the news!! “since he was drafted by Mangini?Tannenbaum”….he will start the best player or he will start Clemens because they already know what Chad can and can’t do. Not because of an immature “he’s my guy” approach….

By Clemens, are you all talking about Roger because if he’s still juicing, and based on his neck and head size I think we all know the answer to that, he is the Jets best chance. Hell, Debbie Clemens would probably win the starting job at this point. She might be a little bigger than Chad but I bet she’s still mobile.
