Might the Packers come away from the Brett Favre standoff with an extra first-round draft pick in 2009?
With Favre slated to be traded to either the Jets or Buccaneers, Peter King of SI.com reports that he has heard reliably that the Jets are offering the Packers a third-round draft pick that could rise to a first-round pick depending on the team’s performance and how well Favre plays. Per King, the Buccaneers would definitely not offer that kind of a package for Favre.
That meshes with the previous report from Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, who said the Jets were making the Packers a much better offer than the Buccaneers were, but that Favre hadn’t warmed up to the possibility of playing in New York.
The Packers would certainly rather trade Favre to the Jets than to an NFC team, so if the Jets are making the best offer, then the Jets are definitely the team the Packers would want to make a deal with.
That indicates that the main obstacle in the way of the trade getting done is Favre himself.

Please, please please, make it the Jets. I’d love to see Favre face the Patriots twice this year. On top of that, Mr Wing-and-a-prayer would drive the Jet-nuts nuttier than usual.

I can think of a good reason for Favre not to go to New York… his drama queen wishy-washy act won’t go over there nearly as well as it has in Green Bay. Maybe he’s afraid of some real criticism.

Do it. Tampa won’t make the playoffs. At least the Jets have a good offensive line and good enough play makers to challenge for a wild card.

As a Jets fan I would cringe if that were the offer…..WAYYY to high. However I do not believe that information to be accurate because the Jets don’t even have a third round pick. They traded it to Carolina as part of the Jenkins trade.

I can see Favre’s point.
After being treated as a god for over 15 years in Green Bay, the kind of reception he can look forward to by the fans in the New York tri state area the first time he has a two interception game will be a lot different.
That doesn’t even address the media coverage he can expect. It will probably be a little more “objective” than what he is used to in Wisconsin.
In Tampa Bay, the fans and media will probably be willing to give him the adulation he craves for a little while, at least.

Favre should get what he wants. F the Packers management. At this point, Favre should do whatever he can to get the GM fired. He should continue to drag this thing out as long as possible.
Aside from screwing up the Packers, which makes me happy at this point, I’m getting a kick out of reading all of these comments by losers whose teams have been beaten by Favre all of these years.
It’s funny because you realize that Favre will continue to beat your teams when he plays them again and you can’t stand it. You thought you were rid of him. Oh, and he will still make his $12 million this year, which by the way, is $11,999,999 more than most of you writing on this blog will make in your career.

I don’t care how good Favre plays; giving up a first rounder is a terrible idea. Why waste the best chance you have at establishing a stable team over the next 10 years by taking in a player who will help you for one, maybe two years. Conditional? The better Favre plays, the higher the pick? That’s actually a bad idea. If Favre and the Jets win the Super Bowl, Favre will REALLY retire and the Jets would give up their first rounder, and they’re screwed for another two-three years.

He doesn’t want to play for the Jets. Pure and simple. He won’t admit that simply because that’ll weaken Green Bay’s leverage in negotiating with the Bucs, which could prevent a deal with Tampa Bay getting done.
The Bucs may not have been his first choice, but he knows as well as most knowledgeable fans know: there is a heck of a talent base growing in Tampa. The offensive line may be the best in the league by 2009.

Hey Jets83, that was a third and fifth from the 08 draft dumbass! It was number 68 overall to the Panthers. Check your facts. Also, have the Jets REALLY had good luck with the draft anyway?

I’d love to see Favre try this in Philly…I mean, theoretically. Right now I’d much rather have McNabb than Favre…while they may both have the hearts of prima donna WRs, at least Donnie Mac isn’t holding his team ransom. He might whine, but he always shows up to play…or to stand on the sidelines and watch someone else play while he heals.

Tampa is the obvious choice. They would immediately become a Superbowl contender. They already have an outside shot if Garcia stays healthy. The Bucs have a few possible pro bowlers on their offensive line this year due to free agency and developing young draft pics. The Jets dont even know who will be starter this season. Tampa will be a top 3 defense again and finally have a savy QB who can create 300+ Passing yards on a consistent basis. With Favre and their soft schedule they could be an easy pick to grab the #2 seed behind Dallas. The Jets are rebuilding and Favre wants a ring.

mohicisco, while you are right about the draft picks, you are wrong about out performance in the the drafts that tanny and eric have been in charge of, so far three and we got starters in dbrick, mangold, and now eric smith will be our starting strong or left safty. and also leon washington and brent smith in the 1st. in the second we got starters in revis and david harris. not bad start in the first two and in the third, keller looks like a stud so far in camp and we shall wait and see about the rest of this years draft, but let’s not be too critical yet.
about a 1st for favre, no way jose.
see you in tb if that is the case.
maybe, just maybe if we win it, then maybe a 2nd. but no 1st for one -two years of play.

Wow, the hate on this board. Did Elway get this treatment when he refused to play for the Colts? Did Manning get this treatment when he whined about playing for the Chargers? I think Favre has at least EARNED the right to compromise a destination. He wanted to play in Minnesota, but the Pack nixed that deal. He’s willing to play in Tampa Bay, but now it seems that the Pack will hack that one as well. I would welcome him if I needed a solid QB.

Of course, the third-round draft pick falls to a seventh-round pick after Favre’s inevitable 2008 15 interceptions per TD ratio.
