We reported last night that the Bengals and linebacker Keith Rivers, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2008 draft, were close to working out a contract.
We’re now told that Rivers is on his way to Cincinnati to sign the thing.
The sticking point has been the curve-busting deals given by the Jets to linebacker Vernon Gholston at No. 6 and by the Saints to defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis at No. 7. Both players got huge increases in comparison to the same slots a year ago, and the end result has been that the craziness previously confined to the top four or five picks has now slid down through the top seven.
As we understand it, Rivers’ deal doesn’t do the same thing at No. 9. We hope to get more details once the ink is on the page.

So are the Bengals cheap, or wise for not giving into market-skewing deals (like the Jets)?

Jonathan: With the Bengals Rivers gets to start right away, and with the Pats he would be a backup. Notice the Pats didn’t pay Mayo a huge deal and nobody’s calling them cheap.

Yes, Harvey needs to get signed so we can end these ridiculous rookie holdouts. There needs to be a rookie pay cap.

Bondem, thats because the Pats have the best front office in the NFL.They know how not to overpay players & when to let them move onto other teams that will overpay. Hello Seattle Seahawks(Deion Branch) & Philadelphia Eagles(Mesante)to name the most recent examples.
