Although he’s not on an NFL roster, 18-year veteran linebacker Junior Seau hasn’t announced his retirement.
Well, actually, he has announced his retirement, but that was two years ago. And after playing the 2006 and 2007 seasons with the Patriots, it’s apparently still possible that he could play 2008 for the Patriots as well.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick acknowledged that he has spoken to Seau, although he wasn’t particularly helpful when Boston Herald reporter John Tomase asked whether Seau could re-join the team.
“We are at 80 and if we make any roster moves we’ll let you know as soon as we can,” Belichick said. “We are where we are right now. If anything changes, we’ll let you know.”
The 39-year-old Seau is well past his prime and looked awfully slow last season, and Belichick has made a point this off-season of getting faster at linebacker. But Seau is a smart player who could jump right into the lineup if called upon, and it sounds like that’s still at least a possibility.
If Seau doesn’t come back, he’ll be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Others in that class could include Michael Strahan, Jonathan Ogden, Larry Allen, Warren Sapp, and, maybe, Brett Favre.

I am stunned that Belichick would respond to any question asked by Tomase, even with one of Belichick’s non-response responses.
I am also stunned that the Patriots would allow Tomase anywhere near Belichick.
I guess it is just a stunning day for me.

Why would Belichick tell fat ass Tomase anything? F**CKIN traitor!!! Maybe Tomase will break the story..”based on a VERY reliable source, of course” that Junior Seau is actually stalking Walsh in Hawaii waiting for just the right second to “Ken Lucas” the weasel. TOMASE MUST BE FIRED!

I can’t believe Tomase still covers the Patriots. I wonder how he is being treated inside the locker room?

The best part of last season was moments after the Patriots scored in the closing minutes of the Super Bowl…..the camera cut to Bruschi bearhugging Seau and mouthing something that looked like “you’re about to get your ring!”. They thought they had it. We all know what happened after that. LOL.

73 Tackles, 3.5 sacks and 3 ints. I wish I could be that past my prime. Was he the best cover guy in the league? No? Is he responsible for the losing one game? No.
If he is still in great shape bring him back to split time with Bruschi.

What about Steve McNair? He’ll be eligible, and stay that way until they decide to kick him off the ballot. Or maybe the voting system with its voters will say ’screw it’ after 15 years and decide he’s been waiting for a long time.

Belichick was not very helpful in answering Thomase’s question? Shocking… He’s lucky he didn’t get that ubiquitous Belichick swinging whistle wrapped around his neck.

It does not surprise me one bit that Junior Seau would want to play on the Patriots. I know if i was Junior, i sure as hell would wanna play another season on the greatest dynasty in the 21st century.
Many players would love to play on the team with the best Quarterback Ever and best coach ever.
Most players, like Lord Favre for instance, wouldn’t know a dynasty if it dropkicked them in the throat.

He will “shoot the gap” in the Championship game, then tell us, that “all we want in life is a chance (and Favre deserves his)” before the Super Bowl, and the lift the lombardi trophy and ride into the sunset on his surfboard.

I fully expect Seau to re-sign with the Pats. He’ll cost them next-to-nothing against the cap (veteran minimum, further reduced by the veteran exception/exemption (?). No need for a player his age to go through an entire camp…..and they’ll only need him to play part-time during the year (rotating with Bruschi and Mayo, among others).
He’ll be back…..and he’ll contribute!!

If he was “awfully slow”, what was Bruschi? Seau looked quicker than Bruschi. I think he even took more snaps than Bruschi.
Seau is surfing. If the Pats need him, they’ll give him a call. MDS is right. They’re looking to get some speed on defense. They will call him if there are injuries or no one can step up (Like Mony Biesel and Chad “There is no holding on the play, the defender was just overpowered” Brown).

My lasting memory of Junior will be when he and Bruschi hugged each other like the game was over after the Moss TD in Superbowl 42. Brings a smile to my face everytime I think about it.

MDS,
Stick to rumor mongering not scouting. Junior Seau did not look slow at all last yr, maybe compared to Randy Moss and Wes Welker but not for his position. Although a very seasoned veteran and 39 he can still play. He is a big, strong and simply put the guy is still one heck of an athlete. Although he has lost a step for him, he is still quicker than most at the position. He still reacts with great anticipation and still has top notch instincts. He does a great job filling and is very active to the pile. He doesn’t back down from OL and pops them physically when taking on. He still tackles well and physically. The guy loves to hit and loves the game and I saw no evidence of the slow player you are referring to. This guy can still contribute at a pretty high level.

Belichik wasn’t condescending or disdainful? Hmm… Could it be that he is not a complete monster as alleged by Patriots haters everywhere?
The guy has taken way too much crap for what he did. He thought he had a loophole in the rules, but it closed on him. It’s that simple. Sure, it goes without saying that with taking the risk on the loophole, you also run the risk of getting crapped on. But, I believe Belichik has handled it better than most.

Space Bandito –
Besides the three picks, Seau also knocked down four more. And in addition to the 3.5 sacks, he also had several tackles on ball carriers behind the line of scrimmage. And he generated those stats as a part-timer, starting only four games.
Nikos –
You nailed the essence of Seau’s success. His ability to anticipate and react correctly, drawing on his years of experience and knowledge, have more than compensated for his lost step. And that makes the LB corps better - his ability to read and clue others in. I only wish he was in camp helping to coach Mayo.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA…. The Chargers! Let’s see, it’s August again, time for every sports writer to say, “On paper the Chargers have the best collection of talent and depth of any NFL team. There is no reason why they shouldn’t win the big one.”
And right around the beginning of January, Roger Goodell has circled on his calendar, “Give team in San Diego the Heimlich.”
