We’ve talked with several league insiders in response to NFL Players Association Executive Director Gene Upshaw’s strident declaration that he plans to stay on the job until a new Collective Bargaining Agreement is negotiated between the NFL and the union.
And the consensus is that Upshaw has seriously risked galvanizing the rank-and-file in their movement against him.
The thinking is that Upshaw and his confidants are either clueless or in denial regarding the problem that the union’s leadership now faces. Regardless, Upshaw is essentially daring those who already have targeted him to keep trying, and it likely will persuade them to do just that.

It’s time to go Gene! No one stands at the same job more than 30 years anymore. The players assoication need to get a rising attorney type to be on the players side. March 2009 member meeting will be interesting.

The guy has done a lot for players, but he needs to realize that he has to give a little in some of his demands so that the NFL fan will continue to drop money on gear and more importantly, the items that are advertised during the games.
I’m not saying give everything away, but soften your stance on some subjects but take a hard line on others.

Oh yeah…I don’t like him much and would love for him to be done. But, it is what it is.

Upshaw is like a big, fat tick, swollen with blood, that has it’s head buried deep into a dog. Hopefully the player’s union can scratch that parasite off.

Do you really think Upshaw is worried about losing his job? Get real. He has more dirt on the people that make decisions than anyone in the NFL…including owners and the Commish. He’ll leave when it suits him.

I didnt think it was possible for Upshaw to look any dumber, but somehow he manages it. He just does not get it that he works for the players and that he’s supposed to spearhead what the players want, as opposed to telling the players what he thinks is best.
Ultimately, he’s going to be forced out. I hope it is a painful and brutal process for him.
