In the wake of Friday’s troubling incident between receiver Steve Smith and cornerback Ken Lucas, the Panthers could be thinking about life without the talented-but-troubled wideout.
Matt Mosley of ESPN.com reports that there are “rumblings” out of Panthers camp that the team is fed up with Smith’s actions, and are at least considering the idea of trading him.
Mosley says that Smith has become a “divisive force” on the team: “One Panthers source said that several defensive backs were walking around after the recent incident saying that if management didn’t discipline Smith, they would.”
And Mosley, whose covers the NFC East for ESPN.com’s post-Hashmarks blog project, partially justifies his encroachment upon Pat Yasinskas’ NFC South turf by suggesting that the Cowboys could be Smith’s ultimate destination.
Other teams that would at least consider Smith include, in our view, the Eagles, Vikings, Bears, and Redskins.
Assuming that Smith wouldn’t want a new deal, his cap charge for 2008 is a very manageable $1.75 million. Because it’s after June 1, the Panthers wouldn’t take a cap hit for the move until 2009.
Smith currently is signed through 2012. His future salaries are $3.4 million 2009, $5.75 million in 2010, $7 million in 2011, and $7.75 million in 2012.

If this is true I will eat my hat. If my Panthers decide to get rid of Smith, they might as well forget about winning this year (except against the Falcons). I don’t think this is a T.O. like situation where him being a distraction overpowers his abilities on the field, he’ll be a Panther for the foreseeable future.

Do you always have to give the obligatory knee-jerk reaction of Redskins? They drafted two WR’s, have Randel-El & Moss..where the hell are they gonna put Steve Smith? Put some thought into these suggestions.

Florio, please do an article to bring awareness to this hypocrisy. Why is the right thing to do to take a trouble maker off a given team but also OK for another team to sign him? As soon as a player gets the right message by getting cut, another team is waiting to snatch him up.

ESPN has reported some stupid things over the years but this has got to be the worst yet! The Panthers are not going to get rid of Smith. They are not considering trading him, especially to the Cowboys.
This must be standard operational procedures with ESPN. No real news, then make something up and hope it sticks.

Trikee, it’s a chemistry issue. When Smith punched Lucas, that results in a lot of problems in the Panthers locker room.
The PANTHERS locker room.
While his reputation will follow him, a new team won’t hold the same grudge against him, or have the same reason to have beef with him.

i dont see them cutting him or trading him. they would be one dimensional without him and fox is on the hot seat (altho they should move him). but he sure needs meds or something. loose cannon.
if he keeps doing that, some one else on the panthers (or another team) will get tired of it (read: lineman or linebacker) and make him into a pretzel.

I’m sure as soon as someone from the Packs’ front office reads this (no doubt looking for up to date roster information on Lord Favre) there’ll be some phone calls and subsequent trade offers (which will be promptly denied by the Pack once they read of them on PFT).
This is like a mid-day soap opera but instead of airing once a day, we get new shows every few hours.

Why not trade him to the Cards for Boldin? Quality receiver for quality receiver. Boldin is going to walk from the Cards after his contract anyway and Smith is poison to the Panthers locker room

Is Dallas trying to replace Oakland as the island of misfit toys? If they keep it up I’ll have to let go of my life-long hatred of them. Is nothing sacred?
As for Panther locker room chemistry, we who remember Kerry Collins know how that works. Yep, time for Smith to take his talent show out on the road.
