I can't believe Florio gaffed. What he failed to report is that Steve Smith received a $9.3M signing bonus in 2007 and is wrong by reporting there would be no cap hit for the Panthers--there is. Prorated over six years that's a cap hit of $1.55M/year. Therefore, the cap hit for the Panthers in 2008 would be $1.55M and in 2009 would be $6.2M. That's a bitter pill to swallow for a guy not on your team. While $1.55M is not a lot considering the net savings is actually $200K when subtracting his base salary, there is actually a cap impact.

Why not The Raiders? Al Could let Walker walk and give the bonus money to Smith. Win Win Win. Al can readjust his spending, Walker can walk away, and Smith can get over paid to see that he has lost “that step”.

Aso and Hall will break Smith like a Pier 1 Import Memorial Day sale couch that took two weeks to be delivered.

Not going to happen. The reason this came from a NFC East report is Jones is trying to create a trade for a WR. Smith is actually well known around Charlotte for his charity work. Yes he's got problems but I don't see them shipping him off.

You report this but you fail to report the problems with David Carr in the locker room last year?

These are baseless assumptions and perception of what happened from the writer of the articles perspective. It seems that it's more of an "I think" than perceived truth. At least from what I see/hear....

I can't see Smith being traded or moved anywhere in the foreseeable future.

The bucs should make a trade for smith. With a legit #2 for galloway it would open up a whole bunch of stuff for the offense and finally make gruden look the offense genius he's supposed to be. Come Bucs do the damn thing.

Lifelong Saints fans are pretty broken up about this. Of course, were it to happen it might ultimately mean the end of the Fox era in Charlotte, setting up perfectly for the Cowher era. I'm not looking forward to facing Bill Cowher twice a year in the NFC South.

Carolina fans don't deserve Smith he is to good for that City. A bunch of wine and cheeser. Only a bunch of computer hacking nerds would take such an issue with fighting at training camp. Get a shrink if you can't get over being bullied as a kid.

I don't think Steve Smith is the best WR in the league, and I'm all for disciplining a guy with rage issues.....but.....

...Smith is probably better than their other 10 starters on offense combined.

The Panthers are a middle of the pack team capable of competing for a playoff spot with him.Without him(or at least another "elite" WR to replace him that learns REAL fast)they'd be competing for the 1st pick in the draft in 09.

They need to go ahead and trade Smith. Those pansy fans down in Charlotte don't deserve a player as good as Smith. They don't even deserve a NFL team. They deserve a Ballerina team because that is right up their alley.

Maybe the Panthers should trade Smith so he could play for a team with real fans instead of the Panther pansies who call themselves fans. The Charlotte area don't need a football team, their fans are more suited for a Ballerina team. I never seen any other fans in the NFL react the way Panther pansy fans reacted to the Smith/Lucas brawl. Those two have been going at it since they picked up Lucas in 2005. Finally on a really hot and humid day in TC, and after a lot of trash talking, Smith loses his cool and hits Lucas. Afterwards they are treating Smith like a no good piece of trash on all their blogs and forums. This stuff happens a lot more than those pansy fans realize. If they don't appreciate Smith, trade him to a team with fans that would.

*And Mosley, whose covers the NFC East for ESPN.com’s post-Hashmarks blog project, partially justifies his encroachment upon Pat Yasinskas’ NFC South turf by suggesting that the Cowboys could be Smith’s ultimate destination.*

Oooo. A blogger, that talked to his other blogger partner. Great news. So Smith is gonna be a Cowboy? My bad, you said "he could be" based on a couple bloggers. Nice.

uncgmba just because Smith is great with the fans and has local popularity doesnt mean the panthers wont try and get rid of him(Example: Favre). Even if he has say 3000 fans waiting for him in Charlote when he disimbarks from a plain doesnt mean the panthers wont try and get rid of him(Another Example: Favre). And even if the team may suffer and end up doing bad that season because one of their best players isn't there doesnt mean that they won't try to get rid of him(One More Example: Favre).

I love this idea. Smith would be a perfect fit for the Cowboys, and he and Owens would make a fantastic receiving tandem. And the Cowboys are so deep in talent right now that they have plenty of trade bait laying around. Could be another steal of a deal for J.J. and the 'Boys.

Florio - How can you miss the layup?

Farve for Smith straight up. Between Jennings & Smith, Rodgers could over/under throw them all day and still complete 60%. Panthers instantly have a chance to compete. No Smith, but Favre has made worse WRs than on the Panthers look good. And no one could legitimately claim that they would be better with Delhomme at QB...well some people on here would, but they also probably think that Farve and TT would work out swell all season.

Trade Smith and Bill Cowher is the coach of the Panthers in 09.

Keep Smith and Bill Cowher is the coach of the Panthers in 09.

So send him to the Birds who have 2 1st round picks and let Cowher draft some of "his" type of players.

Not saying send the Panthers a 1st, he's worth a 2nd though. The Birds have less of a need for their 2nd than any other team.

i was down in Spartanburg last wednesday...Smith is great with the fans and far and away their most popular player. After the second practice he played with his kids on the practice field for 20 minutes catching up after being in dorms for a week. He's got a temper but Charlotte loves him. No matter what the team thinks, it would be hard to get rid of him given his local popularity.

Instead of not paying his salary and making the fans and team suffer, make him pay that fine to charity (maybe enhancing the anger mgmt classes a little) and play for free. Hit him in the wallet and don't make the team and fans suffer.

Peppers will be the one gone next year...

Is Dallas trying to replace Oakland as the island of misfit toys? If they keep it up I'll have to let go of my life-long hatred of them. Is nothing sacred?

As for Panther locker room chemistry, we who remember Kerry Collins know how that works. Yep, time for Smith to take his talent show out on the road.

I'm sure as soon as someone from the Packs' front office reads this (no doubt looking for up to date roster information on Lord Favre) there'll be some phone calls and subsequent trade offers (which will be promptly denied by the Pack once they read of them on PFT).

This is like a mid-day soap opera but instead of airing once a day, we get new shows every few hours.

i dont see them cutting him or trading him. they would be one dimensional without him and fox is on the hot seat (altho they should move him). but he sure needs meds or something. loose cannon.

if he keeps doing that, some one else on the panthers (or another team) will get tired of it (read: lineman or linebacker) and make him into a pretzel.

Trikee, it's a chemistry issue. When Smith punched Lucas, that results in a lot of problems in the Panthers locker room.

The PANTHERS locker room.

While his reputation will follow him, a new team won't hold the same grudge against him, or have the same reason to have beef with him.

ESPN has reported some stupid things over the years but this has got to be the worst yet! The Panthers are not going to get rid of Smith. They are not considering trading him, especially to the Cowboys.

This must be standard operational procedures with ESPN. No real news, then make something up and hope it sticks.

Florio, please do an article to bring awareness to this hypocrisy. Why is the right thing to do to take a trouble maker off a given team but also OK for another team to sign him? As soon as a player gets the right message by getting cut, another team is waiting to snatch him up.

Do you always have to give the obligatory knee-jerk reaction of Redskins? They drafted two WR's, have Randel-El & Moss..where the hell are they gonna put Steve Smith? Put some thought into these suggestions.

If this is true I will eat my hat. If my Panthers decide to get rid of Smith, they might as well forget about winning this year (except against the Falcons). I don't think this is a T.O. like situation where him being a distraction overpowers his abilities on the field, he'll be a Panther for the foreseeable future.
