Cornerback Fabian Washington has been suspended for the first game of the 2008 season, due to a violation of the Personal Conduct Policy.
“We had knowledge of Fabian’s situation prior to the trade we made for him,” G.M. Ozzie Newsome said in a release. “Based on the NFL’s personal conduct policy, and Fabian’s agreement with the authorities, we knew that a suspension was a possibility. Fabian knows his actions were a mistake and has taken appropriate actions since then.”
Said Washington: “I put myself in a bad situation, and I did not handle it the right way. I was wrong and made a mistake. My girlfriend, my attorney and I wanted a quick resolution and knew that a suspension could happen.”
The suspension will take effect on August 30. He’ll miss practice prior to the Week One game against the Bengals, and he’ll be permitted to return to the team on September 8.
Washington was arrested in February for domestic battery, but avoided prosecution via a 26-week intervention program. He was traded by the Raiders to the Ravens in April.
As a reader recently point out, the message of the past week, given the lack of any penalty imposed on Bills running back Marshawn Lynch, is this: Don’t hit a woman, unless you do it with your car.

“Don’t hit a woman, unless you do it with your car.” Are you serious?
Marshawn had an accident. Comparing an accident to someone intentionally committing violence on a woman is assinine. Men who beat women should be jailed. Marshawn screwed up, but don’t trivialize domestic violence by comparing an accident with it.

I’m going to go ahead and make the bold statement that hitting a person with your car while being intoxicated is just as bad as hitting your girlfriend.

I’m not condoning drinking and driving, and I’ll grant you that Marshawn might have been drunk (or at least had a few drinks), though there is no proof for that so Goodell certainly couldn’t assume Marshawn was drunk. But on a moral level, driving drunk and beating a woman aren’t comparable. One is more stupidity, the other is the scum of the earth.
I have driven with a BAC of over .08 on at least 10 occasions. Maybe once a year between the ages of 16 and 25. I feel stupid for it, and I won’t do it again, but if I had beaten up 10 women, I’m pretty sure I would feel about 1,000 times as much guilt as I do for my previous drunk driving.

So chicken, is it ok to slap your girlfriend if you leave the scene, and only admit to it after the police have spent lots of man-hours and tax payer money doing it? At least Washington manned up and is doing something to prevent this from happening again. All Lynch got was a slap on the ass and a “Good Game”.

@ thefunkychicken: If you had killed someone while drunk driving, you’d feel differently.

Hate to break it to you Florio and others of your ilk, but Lynch wasn’t even drinking that night. Hence the reason NO ONE has come forward claiming he was. It’s scary to think what this country would be like if he charged people based on assumptions.
