Every time we mention the 2002 incident during which Panthers receiver Steve Smith cold-cocked former teammate Anthony Bright in the film room, we’re chastised for dredging up ancient events and ignoring how much Smith has changed.
Yeah, he’s changed. He now fights his teammates out in the open.
According to Steve Reed of CarolinaGrowl.com, Smith beat the crap out of cornerback Ken Lucas on the team’s practice field.
During a Friday morning session at the Panthers’ Wofford College training camp, Smith and Lucas got into a fight while on the sidelines during a special teams drill.
In the end, Lucas had a large gash under his eye and a bloody face.
Though the two men apparently tried to reconcile, it’s surely an unwanted distraction.
“We haven’t had much time to talk about it, but it will be dealt with internally,” coach John Fox said after practice.
Reed reports that there has been “bad blood” between Smith and Lucas in the past, but it had never resulted in anyone’s “fresh blood” being spilled.

Fighting in the film room is completely different than fighting on the field during training camp. It happens in every camp, every year. It’s a non-issue, other than the fact that if Steve Smith doesn’t plan well for his financial future, Screech, Gabe Kaplan, and Little Jerry Seinfeld need to be very concerned.

Why do people immediately blame Smith? Maybe he didn’t even start this fight…it’s just obvious he finished it. He was apologetic after it happened, though.

Fighting on the field is fine. A lot of these other chumps beat up their wives/girlfriends/mothers of their children. Why do we give a crap if these guys beat each other up.

Non-issue for sure. It was on the practice field, in the heat of the day. Tempers flare. If it wasn’t Smitty, it wouldn’t have been blown up so much.

Smith has behavioral problems?, he’s always got a job with Jon Gruden..hell he could have shanked Lucas with a rusty screwdriver and Jon Gruden would hire him..

Fortunately for the players on the other 31 teams, they don’t play with someone who can punch as well as Smith. And maybe Lucas isn’t very well-liked among his teammates or this fight would have been broken up sooner.

how can you say it was a nonissue because it was on the practice field. little arguments happen, a little bit of pushing, grabbing of the facemask. but when you pummel someone to where their face is a bloody mess then thats unacceptable. i hope carolina steps up and hands out some punnishment instead of protecting their star turd.

The issue with this fight is that they were on the sideline and not in practice. If Smith was the one who was sent off for the rest of the day then to me it is obvious that he started it.
