In a move that further thrusts into confusion the manner in which the Personal Conduct Policy will be applied to NFL players, Lions rookie tackle Gosder Cherilus will face no discipline for a July 2007 bar fight that recently resulted in the imposition of one year of pre-trial probation on Cherilus, along with an order to pay the victim $52,000 in restitution.
“No discipline for Cherilus because incident occurred prior to his NFL career,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello informed Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com via e-mail.
The decision like means that Chargers rookie cornerback DeJuan Tribble also won’t face punishment for his role in the same incident.
And, thanks to this development, I’ve now got a topic on which I’ll be basing a column for SportingNews.com.

He was punished when his draft position slipped - that can cost a guy millions over a career. The NFL does not need to jump on when the matter is already criminally and civilly settled

Didn’t Frostee Rucker get a game suspension and fined two game checks for something that (to quote Aiello) “occured prior to his NFL career”?

Based upon that precedent, we can also stop talking about discipline for Ahmad Bradshaw. His probation violation occurred prior to his NFL career as well.

“Because the incident occured prior to his NFL career”?
Tell that to both of the Bengals who served suspensions last year for incidents that occured well before they were drafted.
Stay Classy Greg Aiello, continue to prove you toss Goodell’s salad and tow the company line, even when it’s inconsistant with your previous comments.

interesting. As a Ravens fan, I remember Jamal Lewis being suspended for a bit for something he did before he ever put on an NFL uniform. He called a buddy from a cell phone & tried to score weed (or something) for a woman who he wanted to undress. She happened to be an informant & wouldn’t undress unless he got her something. He did prison time & was suspended for that phone call.

what’s seems to be the problem?if they were not in the league then they should not be punished by them. however I hope the league takes thier prior record into account should they get into any future trouble and drops the hammer on them big time.

Cherilus’ draft position did not slip. He was projected as a late first rounder at the most. The lions took him with a mid-first.

Chris Henry has been suspended for 4 games after the prosecution decided that the complaining witness may have attacked him and he was acting in self defense.
This guy is in a bar fight, has to pay restitution and no punishment from the league? Goodell has it in for you Bengals fans.

Goodell is all talk; this personal conduct policy is only for show. he wanted to show that he was “in charge”. Now we know that is was all bs.
To the guy talking about Jamal Lewis: It wasn’t just a little weed, was it??? I could swear it was more than a kilo (several kilos?) of cocaine.

At the very least, this is inconsistant with last year’s ruling
against Frostee Rucker. He was charged with a crime in college, but disciplined by Goodell. The man does seem to rule with a different set of “rules” based on their team. Roger is definitly not a Bengal’s fan…

Goodell is a biased, biggoted ahole. Oh yeah He’s visiting the Bengals this weekend… The bengals players better watch out Goodell might be in a bad mood and decided to hand down a 4 game suspension to someone for tying their cleats wrong.

I didn’t realize that Jamal was trying to score that much cocaine. I was not in Baltimore at that time, living elsewhere, and only remember the suspension. Wow, that’s a lot worse than I recall it being. How did he not do substantially more jail time then?
