For the first time in five years, Ricky Williams is in training camp and hoping to play a 16-game season. And when he’s asked why he’s still playing, at age 31, after retirements and drug suspensions, he’s upfront about the top reason.
“No. 1, it’s a good salary,” Williams said. “There’s not many jobs where you make this kind of money.”
Williams also says, however, that he would like to restore his reputation, which was tarnished by perceptions that he quit on his team just before training camp in 2004, and that he was more interested in smoking pot than in playing football.
”The way I left made it difficult,” he said. “To come back and clear my name was important to me.”
Williams didn’t play in the NFL at all in 2006 and played only one game in 2007, but the early indications out of Dolphins camp are that he’s healthy and in good shape and should be a significant contributor in 2008, especially if No. 1 running back Ronnie Brown hasn’t completely healed from last season’s knee injury. It’s hard to believe that a 31-year-old could shake off two years of rust and be a solid player, but Williams has done a lot of things that are hard to believe.

Ricky is right. There are not a lot of jobs out there for him that pay the bucks he will be making in the NFL.

The guy is perhaps the most gifted RB in NFL history. He may have set the NFL all time rushing mark along with the NCAA one if he had better counsel and support for his emotional stuggles. When he is healthy, high or not, he is an almost unstoppable RB. Think of the numbers he put up on some suspect at best offensive teams. Throw in his average yardage during the 3 or 4 years he pissed away and he is on EMMits back already.
He is a very good cautionary story, but one that also hopefully has a happy ending. Not in a massage type of way, but in football success and a long and happy life after.

2nd best RB ever to put on the Longhorns jersey. Good luck with your return, Ricky.

Best college running back ever. He could be a factor this year. His team sucks but he might have a couple huge games. I hope he does well.

I am so sick of people wanting this guy to come back he never really liked the nfl (prefered college football and wanted to play for the Texas Rangers after his second season) good riddance if he does not do much this year. I respect that guy from the Colts who retired at 24 today a million times more then this pothead.

I don’t know that Ricky ever saw the big money. I remember he signed that jacked up rookie contract.

How does pot enhance performance on the footbal field? How about we legalize just for us smokers? The rest of you can continue to drink and drive. Good luck Ricky!

He isn’t growing up, at least I doubt it. I seem to remember a judge saying something about a huge child support judgement, and how he refused to reduce the weekly amount due even though he wasn’t playing. The judge said he “could” be making that kind of money, and couldn’t avoid the responsibility of paying the child support.
The amount was huge, and I think this may have been a primary motivating factor in his return.
Unless someone knows something I don’t, which is likely. It was quite some time ago, and my memory is fuzzy at times.

What the hell has Williams ever done that was so bad? He hasn’t run anybody over, been arrested (that I can recall), beat up his girl, driven drunk, or crapped in anybody’s hamper. He could have done any of these things and wouldn’t have gone through half the trouble he did because of The Pot.
Sure, there’s the retirement thing and the suspensions. Ricky deserves shit for doing something that ultimately hurt his team and teammates.
And that’s the difference. If you want to hurt yourself, go right ahead. If The Pot were as legal as alcohol, Ricky wouldn’t have been hurting anybody himself. But then punish him hard if he got caught stealing cookies from Mr. Hooper’s.

Good for you Ricky, sounds like you have come to peace with things in your life. Its refreshing to hear a player say its good money and not that I want more money for a change. Keep in mind he is under an extremely low contract and he is saying this. Keep clean, have a huge year and only good will come out of it! I’m rooting for you!

Anyone else think he got stomped intentionally last year when he got hurt? End zone shot clearly(to me)showed the defender raising his leg and aiming it at Ricky’s shoulder. Guy should have been suspended like Haynesworth.

Look at the reception Josh Hamilton has gotten in baseball. Ricky Williams isn’t a fraction of the f*ck-up that guy was. I’m wishing Ricky the best.
Plus he’s more valuable than squeaky clean Shaun Alexander at this point.
