Add Jerome Bettis to the list of people who don’t understand what the Packers are doing with Brett Favre.
Bettis, the former Steeler who’s now an NFL analyst on NBC, was a guest on Dan Patrick’s radio show today, and Patrick asked him, ”If you were a Packer right now, and the Packers said ‘We don’t want Brett Favre in here, we’re going with Aaron Rodgers,’ as a veteran, how would you feel?”
Said Bettis, “As a veteran, I would say, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I would say, ‘Why would you take such a hard stance?’ I understand you have to think of the future. But as a player, I would say, you know what, let’s go out and give them an equal opportunity and let the best man win. I understand Aaron Rodgers — it’s a delicate situation for him. But if you let the competition decide who wins, no one can be upset about that. And Brett may not win, and if that happens, you’re in the best of all situations because Aaron has proved to you that he can go out there and get it done.”
Do any Packers veterans feel that way? So far, none have said so publicly. But Bettis points out why, from a PR standpoint, Favre has a much easier case to make than the Packers do. All Favre needs to say is, “Let me compete and let the best player win.” That’s what NFL training camps are supposed to be about.

Yes Mr Bettis, unless you are one of midlevel vets who get cut so the Pack can absorb his 12 million dollar salary, which was not planned into the budget.

I know I have been critical of bf, but i agree, open up the competition. if he shows, and unless he starts pulling crap in camp.
But do not change the offense back. Hell all teams’ playbooks are the same… except for mike martz’s offense… the issue is what the team uses in it…
And do not have a sham competition. bf would have to be forced to compete, not allowed to do what he has been doing. practice as hard or harder and workout as hard or harder than anyone in the competition. not handing anyone anything…
and force him to be a team player and help train the next guy. that is the hardest of all. bf really isnt interested in that…

Funny coming from a guy who won his only Super Bowl with an “unproven” QB in Ben Roethlisberger. What’s to say Aaron Rodgers isn’t capable of the same thing? I love how all of these guys have their opinions when they’re not involved. I’m sure he knows exactly what the veterans in the locker room think.

Narcisistic Personality Disorder Test
Name the first Pro Fottball Player you think of when you read the following:
A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy. The disorder begins by early adulthood and is indicated by at least five of the following:
An exaggerated sense of self-importance
Preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
Believes he is “special” and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions).
Requires excessive admiration
Has a sense of entitlement.
Takes advantage of others to achieve
Lacks empathy
The patient is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him.
Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or narcisistic
Clinical Features
Patients with Narcisistic Personality Disorder exaggerate their achievements and talents, and are surprised when they do not receive the recognition they expect.
Their inflated self-evaluation implies a thinly veiled devaluation of others and their accomplishments.
Narcisistic patients only pursue relationships that they perceive will benefit them in some way.
Interpersonally, they are very entitled, expecting others to meet their needs immediately and can become quite indignant if this does not happen.
These patients are self-absorbed and unable to respond to the needs of others.
Any perception of criticism is poorly tolerated

There is a problem with letting training camp decide. If Farve wins, it may be looked at that he was handed the job. If rogers wins we have to listen to Farve bitching about wanting a trade because the cards were unfairly stacked against him. I am so sick and tired of this dude. And what’s worse, it is going to be the same ‘will he, or won’t he’ crap next year.

why make him the starter from the beginning of the season? Farve has never seemed like a smart guy and he certainly has dug himself into a huge hole by repeatedly lying to Packers management about retiring for years now. If he wants to come back make him the back up. Chances are he’ll still end up playing; Rodgers doesn’t seem very durable. If Rodgers does start for the year and plays well the Packers will be in a much better long term situation than if they put Farve as the starter (almost certainly resulting in Rodgers leaving after his contract is up).
Farve has pretty much been a total Sh**head to the team every offseason.
P.S. Vikings with Farve will still stink. Sorry Grapeheads.

Are all you people idiots? During that hard hitting interview with Greta he said he shouldn’t have to compete for his job so this thing with he should be able to compete is bull. Brett was set to come back at the end of March and HE CHANGED HIS MIND why should you or the Packers beleive A WORD HE SAYS.MORONS your all drinking the BRETTNEY kool aid listen to everything he has stated starting with all the lies in his retirement ceremony and all the contradictory things since them he is a spoiled child and the Packers are sick of his tantrums.

jerome is right. that’s all favre wants is a chance to keep his job of 16 years. let the competition begin, that’s of course if the packers are serious about winning this season. rodgers could use the competition. if he wins the job he wins it, but favre is the superior quarterback and would win the starting job.
packers fans, it’s time to question whether packer management really wants to win this year or the future instead. but, in the nfl the future is now and favre gives them the best shot. what are you worried about thompson and mccarthy? let favre compete or release him. it’s obvious you’re not going to get anything in a trade. career ending moves by, thompson, mccarthy and murphy. ron wolf (or any other nfl exec that truly wants to win) would have never handled it this way.
time to take your lumps packer management and let the legend play!!!

why does everyone in the media keep omitting the FACT that brett favre did not think he should HAVE to compete for the job and the packers were offering him that. when did the packers change their minds? when favre stated to the nation in his softball, biased foxnews (go figure) interview that he won’t compete for it. at that time the packers had the offer on the table for him to come in and fight for it. now brett’s changed his mind and realizes he has no choice but to fight for it but the packers have finally pulled the offer after hearing their names continually being smeared by FAVRE in the national media. FAVRE burned that bridge. favre had the chance many times and he said no. now he’s in a corner and he wants the chance again and the packers this time are saying “NO!”. good for them, be a backup and shut the hell up.
and you bettis, you would have been cut after the super bowl if you didn’t retire and never would have even had the option to go back to your team. they would have “moved on” even if you didn’t retire.

Ok so I have seen a lot of posts on this site about how aaron rodgers comes off to the fans in person. They have said he is a jackass and kinda stuck up. I have heard people talk about him in his days at cal and say the same things. And I started to think what are the chances AR resigns with the packers when his contract is up? That brought up these questions:
1. Why woulf he rather play for the GB packers than a bigger market team?
2. Why would he want to resign with a team where, for as long as he plays there, he will be compared to a legend in every aspect of his game?
I think it is pretty obvious that TT likes AR as a QB and thinks he will be able to win football games. I am thinking now that TT has asked himself those two questions and is now attempting to build trust and a sense of “look what I did for you” with rodgers. He can say ” look I forced out brett freaking favre so that you could play.” And that is why TT-along with not wanting to deal with the will-he-wont-he again, and the fact that he wants to be able to take credit for building the entire team- is taking such a seemingly idiotic and steadfast stance on favre.
TT may very well be tying the knot for his own noose, as well as building the platform for the gallows by not getting something done with grant…

inmymind, don’t worry about the Packers’ budget. They are consistantly 20+ million under the cap, and this year is no different. Now Teddy is trying to undercut Ryan Grant with his most recent slap-in-the-face offer. Ted Thompson is mismanaging this team by putting his ego ahead of what’s best for the team. You want to put a winner on the field? Bring Favre back. It’s as simple as that.

WAbronc, i don’t think that it would be looked at as handing Favre the job if he wins a training camp battle…I mean, it’s not like they’ve been excited about the idea of him coming back. If Rodgers wins than that’s a whole other thing.

My guess is if Favre had not retired, he’d still be the starting QB in GB. People like Bettis who say, “Why wouldn’t you take him back?”, always fail to address the fact that the Packers have been dealing with his retirement issue for many years. With what Favre did this year, the Packers are right to not welcome him back. There’s a point where you just gotta move on when a player like Favre can’t make up his mind. Plus, the Packers might be better with Favre, but it’s highly doubtful that it means a superbowl berth. The Packers were 13-3 last year, but that stat is misleading. There were probably 5-6 games where if the ball didn’t bounce their way, they lose the game (Eagles, Chargers, Redskins, Broncos, Chiefs are all games they could’ve lost had they not had luck on their side). The Packers are better to move on and start developing a new QB. Favre is better to stay retired, instead of risking a less than stellar season with the Pack, or even more likely, a less than stellar season with another team.

The one thing the team has going for them in this regard is that they are very young, and alot of the guys haven’t been on the team all that long. Most of the guys have only been playing with Favre three years or less so there wouldn’t be nearly as much loyalty to Favre as there would be on a team comprised mostly of older veterans.

@3324………….
Wow.
So now “Doctor 3324blah-blah-blah-blah” is diagnosing a guy he never met.
Personality Disorders are exagerated proportions of qualities that we all have in our personalities. They are exagerated to the point of dysfunction. The guy’s got a stable family life and career that we all would be glad to have ourselves.
Brett Favre doesn’t need a doctor, or your seat-of-the-pants diagnosis re-typed off some website. He’s a high-achieving professional near the top of his game. Only 32 jobs like his in the world.
Not a perfect person… somewhat impulsive… indecisive at times. And one of the best in the history of the game that we all love.
Give him a break. Let him work. Let him compete for a job in Green Bay or elsewhere. And leave the blase Psycho-Babble to Doctor Phil…

i love how cheeseheads forget prior to last season’s revival brett and the pack were really not that good and people were saying it was time for him to hang it up. then last year thanks to the lousy g.m’s moves they make it to the championship game. and favre is is still crying because they did not get randy moss and listen to his imput? what’s that tell the guys who had that great year? he finaly retired after years of making them wait on whether he would or not and they are the bad guys? they gave him every chance to change his mind before the mini camps and he said no, so they make plans for rodgers and now he wants back in and they are supposed to just drop everything? or better yet let him break his contract to play for whoever he wants? talk about loyalty it’s a 2 way street and he has shown none to the packers. the man is getting paid 12 mill to play for them how much more loyalty does he need? and in return he plays they don’t respect me card. I hate the packers as I am a bears fan and funny how of sudden when the bears are beating the pack on a regular basis the vikes are suddenly thier arch rivals, but even I have to side with cheesehead mgt. on this.
