Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said today that he would like to pick a winner in his three-man quarterback competition in time to have a starter in place for the August 9 preseason opener.
“I think that player needs to be behind the offensive line,” Sparano said. “He needs to start to find chemistry with whoever the receivers will be. If he was head and shoulders above everyone else it would be clear to us and we would start moving in that direction.”
Unfortunately, right now no one seems to be taking the lead.
“I don’t see anybody ahead of anybody right now when I watch what I’m seeing out there,” Sparano said.
That’s probably good news for Josh McCown, who is more experienced than John Beck and obviously more experienced than rookie Chad Henne. Sparano most likely wants to start the season with a quarterback who won’t throw games away, so the smart money is on the veteran.

I would agree the McCown would be the best QB to start the season. He gives the Dolphins the best chance of winning. The offensive line needs time to gel before putting a young QB back there in the fire.

Oh boy, I’ve been wondering how close Sparano was to picking between Larry, Curly, and Moe.

Josh McCown is their best option at QB? Florio, is it too late to move them down to #32?

Relax, Fish fans. You know all 3 QBs will get playing time this year as the new coaching staff sorts out the mess that Saban & Co. left.

Gives us “the best chance of winning this year”!?!?!?
The fins are still bailing water out of the boat and people are worried about how far we can get her to sail?
First things first guys, and finding out what Beck can do as the starter (while Henne learns and McCown is there for relief) is more important than ending the season with 4 wins instead or 3. Solidifying the roster for the future, and working on chemistry play to play is more important than winning 4 games as well.
i’d LOVE to see the Fins go far this year. But what’s important now is that the Fins answer their many questions, and that the Redskins do poorly.
let’s worry about wins once we’ve had a season with more than 1 of them.

Have you see McCown play?? all he does is throw the ball to the opposing team.

Why not throw the rookie in there, chances are they’ll win twice as many games as they did last year.

JohnnyH,
because we’ve seen time and time again what throwing a rookie QB to the wolves can do for his confidence, and in turn- what it’ll do to the investment the team made in him.
it’s best to be methodical in easing him into the game (and the fans, who can be nasty), instead of recklessly risking his development to just see what he can do.
And we don’t know what Beck can do either. We only know he couldn’t handle a pass rush in his rookie year, something few elite QBs could handle in their rookie years. Remember Aikman’s rookie year?
i don’t predict Beck will be an elite QB, but the potential still exists. It’s best not to ignore that potential since doing otherwise would destroy the teams investment in Beck in order to risk destroying Henne’s development on a whim.

ugh, doesn’t look good. i’d rather someone earn the starting job rather than the coach saying “ok, well today is august 9th, and since i promised i’d pick a starter by now, it will be…. “

^^ i agree.
But on the flip side of the coin i think the Dolphins would have benefited by rolling with what appeared to be a less than desirable option, instead of changing hats with every game. I hope by August 9th, whoever has earned the starting position gets at least 8 straight games as the starter. If they aren’t the answer by then, Henne should be ready to starting easing into the mix.
I really liked how the offense was running towards the end of Gus Frerottes time as the starter. They won six games in a row to close the season at 9-7 after going 3-7. And when i say this, i mean i liked it MUCH better than starting the season with Culpepper, then switching to Harrington (too late).
But nope. Saban wanted a big name like Daunte instead of the team chemistry they had with Frerotte, and the resulting concoction blew up in the face of Dolfans everywhere.
They need to name a guy and develop him, no matter how much the fans bitch and moan about our record this coming year.
