Another brilliant post by INVAIDUH (he really puts the DUH in INVAIDUH)...

"THE NATION HAD 3 BOWLS WAY BEFORE YOU"
Yes, 1976 (in which you benefitted from a phantom call from Ben Druyf (sp?) against the Pats), 1980, and 1983. This also tells us how badly the Raiders have sucked for the last 25 years. Also, for the record, the Raiders have been to 5 SB's total over their entire history while the Pats have been to 6... You tell me you has the richer history...

Secondly... who can be more fairweather than a Raiders fan? They have such a steep tradition that they moved from Oakland to LA and then back again.

mustbechris,

Asante leaving the Patriots and signing with the Eagles is totally different than LaMont Jordan signing with the Patriots after having left the Raiders. Asante and the Eagles worked out one of the highest paid contracts for a defensive player, in less than one day from being let go? Do you know how much talk and how many phone calls must be made? LaMont Jordan won't see A FRACTION of what Samuels is being paid. Do you honestly think the Patriots would take the risk of tampering with Jordan, someone they view as a 2nd or 3rd string running back, while he was still wearing Black and Silver? Please...

smells like Patriot-hate to me.

Hey Florio, I guess since you decided that since the Eagles must've talked to Asante Samuel while he was under contract with the Pats since we signed him in one day, surely you must feel the same way about the Pats signing LaMont Jordan in one day.

You forgot the "(rolls eyes)" part. (rolls eyes)

if he gets his act together, he is a versatile back up who can can play the role of morris (tough inside running) or faulk (pass catching 3rd down back) if either goes down. granted that is a big if, and he'd have to show improvement in pass protection to see the field much.

and voodoodauley, no one is calling this a briliant move. however, it is a low risk-high potential reward pickup. if it works out, great. if it doesnt, big deal. it cant hurt them.

I sure hope Jordan makes the team. My only concern is he has dropped a few balls with the Raiders. I would like him to hold on the ball.

Big M says: No surprise… Schefter “predicted” it yesterday on Total Access.

I've been noticing a lot of Schefter's "predictions" also seem to come true. Gee if I didn't know better I'd say the Patriots prefer to give the NFL Network scoops while leaving ESPN out in the cold. I wonder why?

oaklandzombie:

All due respect, I understand your frustration with Jordan's performance in Oakland, but you might recall that similar things were said about Moss last year and look how that's turned out (well, so far, anyway). Maybe it's just that Jordan wasn't a good fit on an Oakland team that is now stocked with premier RBs. Also, consider that the Patriots' staff doesn't screw up very often in judging whether a player will be a positive contributor in their system as a role-player. If he makes the team and accepts his assigned role, I wouldn't expect Jordan to be setting any individual records, but making two or three critical plays per game as a part-timer in a quietly competent backfield, just like Faulk and Evans.

SeanMartin:

I think Jordan (AND the rookie, Green-Ellis) would need to perform spectacularly well in camp and pre-season for the Pats to consider shedding Faulk this year. What I think may happen is that Jordan will share time with Faulk as a relief man for the starting tandem of Morris and Maroney, AND also occasionally in a relief FB role for Evans (with Green-Ellis going to the PS and Eckel cut). Yes, I realize that he's not an FB per se and his blocking skills are (ahem) unproven, but that's the point - confusing the opposing defense and making them account for him and possibly opening up something else for the Pats' offense. That said, I'd guess that if Faulk WERE to go, it would be to the Browns and Romeo Crennel.

I hear you about James Davis, but the early, early analysis seems to be that he'll be off the board before the Pats' (normal) first pick. So, I'm guessing all Pats fans will be paying more attention to all RBs in the college games this season. At this point, other than Davis and a couple of underclassmen who might come out early (Wells, Ohio State), I don't see any particular standout prospects.

Why is it that when New England signs a veteran player who has soured to his last team the media call it a brilliant move. But When Oakland picks up another teams veteran player all you hear is folks blasting them for picking up a washed up player or paying too much for a washed up player? Oakland picked up Jerry Rice when everyone said he was all washed up. Didn't he play a big role in them getting to the superbowl?

For the record, Jordan will play well for the Pats. If he choses to stay in shape and learn the play book at least. He still has some good miles on his wheels. Just over stayed his welcome in Oakland and they had no room for him.

Well, if the problems he has are true, then I would have to say that if any team can whip the guy into shape and get him going, it would be the Pats. This is his chance to prove he is the running back he says he is. Maybe his last chance.

seanmartin

i see you need reading glasses since you completly missed the whole point of my post. also jordan didn't leave he was released. the point of the post was that jordan is an injury prone mouth runner who has an over inflated ego about himself. the guy has issues with studying the playbook and conditioning and you can't say that was because he was in oakland, he's been like that his whole career.

here's something i'm sure you fairwheather pats fans also didn't know. jordan has been on the outs since week 7 last season. hell the raiders didn't even have him suited up in some games towards the end of the season. why you ask? becuase he didn't know the playbook or blocking assignments. on top of that when he would block it was like watching pee wee football. bodies just flew by him, just ask any raider fan.

as thinking i don't know what the raiders backfield looks like well the raiders didn't have bush or mcfadden last year and they still didn't bother to suit jordan up for some games. so how does that make him worthy of being a starter? i guess he should have kept his mouth shut about not knowing the playbook and thrown out the pizza menus.

Hurricanes, I	do know Patroits football and have seen what the Patroits do with great and not so great players. Givens, Branch, Vinatieri, McGinest are just a few former Patroit players that haven't faired as well as they did when they were with the Patroits. The Patroits play and practice situational football, which in turn makes a average player a good player in thir system. It worked for Caldwell, Hawkins, Gaffney, Harrisson, Vrabel, Welker. I've probably forgotten one or two more, but I hope you get what I'm saying. So don't assume I don't know anything about football...my husband taught me well and I listened to his words.

oaklandzombie,

For someone who has Oakland in his/her screen name, you don't know why LaMont left, do you? They just drafted Darren McFadden, and the year before that they drafted Michael Bush. Bush is finally healthy, and should get some carries; God only knows he deserves it. Also, Justin Fargas stepped up huge last year for the Raiders. Oakland viewed Fargas as a better player than Jordan, and that is why LaMont was bounced. There was no way the Raiders were going to give up on Bush because he has just as much talent as McFadden (did you see the game he broke his leg in!). 3 running backs is sufficient, especially for a team with as many problems as Oakland. Have they signed Russell to a deal yet, Jesus...

Hmmmm . . . the Patriots backfield is suddenly looking extremely, um, veteran, aside from Maroney. This is Jordan's 8th year, Heath Evans' 8th, Morris' 9th, Faulk's 10th. The only rookie, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, is likely to go to the PS if he has potential and Kyle Eckel (2nd year) probably needs to perform exceptionally well in order for the Pats to keep two FBs. It's a very talented, capable backfield that should commit a more than acceptable level of damage this season, but its sell-by date is already getting close.

Perhaps the Pats will be looking at RBs in the 2009 draft? Walter already has them taking one with their first second-round pick (heh).

You're right, I don't know who the New England Patriots are.

If YOU followed them, you would know that they INTENTIONALLY don't make a player crucial to their SYSTEM OFFENSE. Why do you think Morris was able to do what he did last year? Because he was doing what he was told to do with minor ability. LaMont Jordan is twice the running back that Kevin Faulk is (who just so happens to be another system player). I love Kevin Faulk, I respect the hell out of him, and I know the Patriots organization does as well, but there is no way you can be honest and tell me Faulk is the better running back. Okay, you're a Patriots fan, that's the only reason you know that Faulk is somewhat of a reliable blocking back. He's not in the top 10 in the NFL blockingwise. Just because you sit on your couch every Sunday and hear the announcers talk about your team, you think you are justified with what you say. LOOK AROUND THE NFL! The Patriots are a system team; their defense and special teams are as well. They bring in players, they do what they can with their abilities, and thrive with the team's progress. Look at guys like Deion Branch, Daniel Graham, Reche Caldwell. Once they left, they disappeared. Then we bring guys in and groom them through our system. You should know this because these are the words of Bill Belichick.

Jordan and Faulk are just about even on yards from scrimmage per game for their careers, and Jordan did this in a relief role (like Faulk) with the Jets, and as the number one on one of the worst offensive teams in the history of the NFL with the Raiders of '05-'07. Jordan is an intelligent player football wise like Faulk. Jordan is also two years younger and LOOKING for a spot on a team. He'll bust his ass and I would not be surprised to see Faulk go, despite his knowledge of New England's offense.

PatsDominate; I never said this was a move to replace Faulk, anyways. I said that if Jordan can perform, which I expect him to with his talent and the passing attack of the Patriots, I would not be surprised to see Faulk bounced via trade. I feel as if Jordan has more talent (don't give me this YPC, because Jordan's YPC for his career is .3 yards greater than Faulks).

Hurricanes, you watch the Patriots' games too? No kidding Faulk is a valuable part to the Patriots' offense. Anyone who steps on the field is important. McDaniels isn't just going to throw someone out there and say, "Just run around until the whistle blows." The Patriots' offense is unique, and the only reason you're saying Faulk is an integral part of it is because you've seen too many highlights where he catches a screen pass. Faulk had one game over 60 yards receiving, and only 1 receiving touchdown last year. LaMont Jordan could easily replicate what Faulk has done. You're overrating Faulk incredibly here. He has done a great job for the Patriots, I love him, but he is replaceable. Much like any 3rd down back.

any patriot fan out there that is pumped up by this signings should have their head checked. first and foremost the reason jordan lost his job and his support in oakland was because the guy doesn't study his playbook. he even said it in an interview 2 years ago that he doesn't know his blocking assignments and then went on to say he doesn't need to know them.

the turns 30 this year and has chronic back problems on top of a conditioning problem. warren sapp summed jordan up with, "he is the most out of shape running back i have ever seen". i can would bet money that jordan is crying to the media about his playing time by week 4 and how he should be the starter. if you need proof just look at week 1 last year the guy was sucking air on the sideline by half-time and the team noticed it.

he's just another over inflated back-up who thinks he should be starting.

Cheeseburger, Mike is spending time away but he wanted me to tell you that you are hired. Keep up your anti Patriot posts, you better start being more concerned about the Jags in your own division because they are about ready to take over first place. As a wildcard team, losing home field advantage will make it difficult to crank up the heat and pipe in the noise.

Very interesting move by the Pats. I would have said that they are all set at RB. This may be an indication that Morris is not as healthy as they would like. This may be insurance to keep the 1-2 RB punch in effect even if one goes down.

From what I understand he is pretty versatile, can catch and run, and has the ability to avoid defenders as well as run over them. Fitness may be a question. He may need someone to get on him about his workout ethic. Also I have no idea what type of pass blocker he is. NE can always use pass blockers.

He got an average of 3.8 with the Raiders. Then again, no one really excels with them. He may be another gold nugget that just needs polishing. Bill loves to get players from Oakland and see what he can do with them!

Run out the clock, then call a timeout. Throw into the endzone on every play inside the redzone and then see if the opposing coach runs off the field before the game has ended. BTW, I think Florio dislikes Peyton Manning because he is the only human with more forehead than Florio. Keep up the good work MDS and stop having Florioioiio proof read your articles. Hire a 3rd grader.

Hey Sean,

You obviously don't follow the Patriots, I guess. This isn't a move to replace Faulk. He's one of their most valuable players. Jordan, if he makes the team, will help back up Maroney and split time with Morris to give them some depth along the goalline, etc.

You must not be very familiar with Patriots football.

Kevin Faulk is a major part of their offense. His receiving skills are unbelievably valuable to the team's ability to convert third downs, in addition to an number of other situations on the field. Further, he's among the best in the game in terms of blitz pickup and chipping defenders in the backfield. To say the least, Kevin Faulk is far more valuable to the Patriots offense than most understand.

This Jordan signing adds another bigger, thicker back to the mix, and there is no guarantee that he makes the team.

The Patroits will turn Jordan into a running machine. Their offense will be explosive.

It's great that the Patriots are signing a veteran running back, this will allow them to let Laurence Maroney grow into his own without limiting his carries for concern of injury, especially in situations when the team has the lead.

I think that Jordan could possibly get some reps, but mainly he is a could pass catching RB with some bulk who can take some carries from Maroney to leave him free for big plays.

I agree with the Raiders the Jordan is not a feature back, but he is quite an option to have at #2 or #3.

This the Pats loading up at RB, following Sammy Morris' injury last year - and a concerted effort to have an even more balanced, and stronger offense than last year.

There's going to be no lamenting calls of "running up the score" by fans or opposing team players helpless to stop the Pats offense. The game plan is build a 40 point lead with a balanced offense and then let Sammy Morris and Jordan run out the clock.

No surprise here. Jordan will likely take Kevin Faulk out of the equation if he can perform.
