Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the New England Patriots have signed running back LaMont Jordan, a day after he was released by the Oakland Raiders.
Per Schefter, Jordan was also considering signing with the Saints, a team that could be in greater need of another veteran running back if Deuce McAllister’s swollen knee turns out to be serious. Jordan’s deal with the Patriots is a one-year contract. No financial terms have been reported.
Last season Jordan played in 12 games for the Raiders, starting seven and finishing the season with 144 carries for 549 yards and three touchdowns.

Hurricanes, I do know Patroits football and have seen what the Patroits do with great and not so great players. Givens, Branch, Vinatieri, McGinest are just a few former Patroit players that haven’t faired as well as they did when they were with the Patroits. The Patroits play and practice situational football, which in turn makes a average player a good player in thir system. It worked for Caldwell, Hawkins, Gaffney, Harrisson, Vrabel, Welker. I’ve probably forgotten one or two more, but I hope you get what I’m saying. So don’t assume I don’t know anything about football…my husband taught me well and I listened to his words.

I’ll bet Randy put in a good word for him and that carried some weight.

i see you need reading glasses since you completly missed the whole point of my post. also jordan didn’t leave he was released. the point of the post was that jordan is an injury prone mouth runner who has an over inflated ego about himself. the guy has issues with studying the playbook and conditioning and you can’t say that was because he was in oakland, he’s been like that his whole career.
here’s something i’m sure you fairwheather pats fans also didn’t know. jordan has been on the outs since week 7 last season. hell the raiders didn’t even have him suited up in some games towards the end of the season. why you ask? becuase he didn’t know the playbook or blocking assignments. on top of that when he would block it was like watching pee wee football. bodies just flew by him, just ask any raider fan.
as thinking i don’t know what the raiders backfield looks like well the raiders didn’t have bush or mcfadden last year and they still didn’t bother to suit jordan up for some games. so how does that make him worthy of being a starter? i guess he should have kept his mouth shut about not knowing the playbook and thrown out the pizza menus.

Well, if the problems he has are true, then I would have to say that if any team can whip the guy into shape and get him going, it would be the Pats. This is his chance to prove he is the running back he says he is. Maybe his last chance.

Why is it that when New England signs a veteran player who has soured to his last team the media call it a brilliant move. But When Oakland picks up another teams veteran player all you hear is folks blasting them for picking up a washed up player or paying too much for a washed up player? Oakland picked up Jerry Rice when everyone said he was all washed up. Didn’t he play a big role in them getting to the superbowl?
For the record, Jordan will play well for the Pats. If he choses to stay in shape and learn the play book at least. He still has some good miles on his wheels. Just over stayed his welcome in Oakland and they had no room for him.

oaklandzombie:
All due respect, I understand your frustration with Jordan’s performance in Oakland, but you might recall that similar things were said about Moss last year and look how that’s turned out (well, so far, anyway). Maybe it’s just that Jordan wasn’t a good fit on an Oakland team that is now stocked with premier RBs. Also, consider that the Patriots’ staff doesn’t screw up very often in judging whether a player will be a positive contributor in their system as a role-player. If he makes the team and accepts his assigned role, I wouldn’t expect Jordan to be setting any individual records, but making two or three critical plays per game as a part-timer in a quietly competent backfield, just like Faulk and Evans.
SeanMartin:
I think Jordan (AND the rookie, Green-Ellis) would need to perform spectacularly well in camp and pre-season for the Pats to consider shedding Faulk this year. What I think may happen is that Jordan will share time with Faulk as a relief man for the starting tandem of Morris and Maroney, AND also occasionally in a relief FB role for Evans (with Green-Ellis going to the PS and Eckel cut). Yes, I realize that he’s not an FB per se and his blocking skills are (ahem) unproven, but that’s the point - confusing the opposing defense and making them account for him and possibly opening up something else for the Pats’ offense. That said, I’d guess that if Faulk WERE to go, it would be to the Browns and Romeo Crennel.
I hear you about James Davis, but the early, early analysis seems to be that he’ll be off the board before the Pats’ (normal) first pick. So, I’m guessing all Pats fans will be paying more attention to all RBs in the college games this season. At this point, other than Davis and a couple of underclassmen who might come out early (Wells, Ohio State), I don’t see any particular standout prospects.

Big M says: No surprise… Schefter “predicted” it yesterday on Total Access.
I’ve been noticing a lot of Schefter’s “predictions” also seem to come true. Gee if I didn’t know better I’d say the Patriots prefer to give the NFL Network scoops while leaving ESPN out in the cold. I wonder why?

I sure hope Jordan makes the team. My only concern is he has dropped a few balls with the Raiders. I would like him to hold on the ball.

if he gets his act together, he is a versatile back up who can can play the role of morris (tough inside running) or faulk (pass catching 3rd down back) if either goes down. granted that is a big if, and he’d have to show improvement in pass protection to see the field much.
and voodoodauley, no one is calling this a briliant move. however, it is a low risk-high potential reward pickup. if it works out, great. if it doesnt, big deal. it cant hurt them.

Hey Florio, I guess since you decided that since the Eagles must’ve talked to Asante Samuel while he was under contract with the Pats since we signed him in one day, surely you must feel the same way about the Pats signing LaMont Jordan in one day.
You forgot the “(rolls eyes)” part. (rolls eyes)

mustbechris,
Asante leaving the Patriots and signing with the Eagles is totally different than LaMont Jordan signing with the Patriots after having left the Raiders. Asante and the Eagles worked out one of the highest paid contracts for a defensive player, in less than one day from being let go? Do you know how much talk and how many phone calls must be made? LaMont Jordan won’t see A FRACTION of what Samuels is being paid. Do you honestly think the Patriots would take the risk of tampering with Jordan, someone they view as a 2nd or 3rd string running back, while he was still wearing Black and Silver? Please…
smells like Patriot-hate to me.

Another brilliant post by INVAIDUH (he really puts the DUH in INVAIDUH)…
“THE NATION HAD 3 BOWLS WAY BEFORE YOU”
Yes, 1976 (in which you benefitted from a phantom call from Ben Druyf (sp?) against the Pats), 1980, and 1983. This also tells us how badly the Raiders have sucked for the last 25 years. Also, for the record, the Raiders have been to 5 SB’s total over their entire history while the Pats have been to 6… You tell me you has the richer history…
Secondly… who can be more fairweather than a Raiders fan? They have such a steep tradition that they moved from Oakland to LA and then back again.
