The Tennessee Titans and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth have reached agreement on a one-year deal that will allow him to become an unrestricted free agent in 2009 if he meets certain incentives in the coming year.
The Titans and Haynesworth had been talking about such an arrangement for several weeks.
It allows the Titans to get the most out of Haynesworth for a second straight year, given that he took his game to a new level (finally) in his push for a new contract. (And he also didn’t shred anyone’s face with his cleat.)
The Titans hold their first practice at 3:30 p.m. EDT, but Haynesworth isn’t expected to participate until he passes a conditioning test and the contract is finalized.
The agreement between Haynesworth and the Titans leaves Ravens linebacker/defensive end Terrell Suggs as the only unsigned franchise player.

Good move, but a better one would’ve been signing him to a multi-year deal. Anyone who saw that line last year could see that.

Incentive clause # 1: Faces stomped, less than one.

They couldn’t sign him long term. he’s had 1 really good season since joining the titans and even the he missed 3 games. with his history it would’ve been really risky to pay him the kind of money that he’d have asked especially after everyone’s been calling him the best DT in the league (and rightly so when he played last year).
this is the best option. he gets to camp. plays hard this season and if he makes all of the incentives then the titans will know that last year wasn’t a fluke and they’ll be willing to throw money his way anyway.

Haynesworth is a contract year stud. When he gets his big-money deal, he goes back to being Phat Albert, a guy who plays hard when he wats to and will take plays/games off.
