Lions rookie linebacker Jordon Dizon has been in the news because he was arrested six days before Detroit selected him in the second round of the NFL draft, and because the Lions only found out about the arrest when a newspaper reported on it two months after the draft.

Now he’s in the news for another reason: As the Lions begin their second day of training camp today, he’s the only absent player.

Dizon still hasn’t signed a contract, and Peter Schaffer, Dizon’s agent, wrote in an e-mail to the Detroit Free Press this morning that negotiations have “Smacked right into the wall,” adding, “I am headed home.”

For their part, the Lions don’t sound inclined to increase the offer they’ve put on the table. Said COO Tom Lewand, “We’re comfortable with where we are. We’re very, very comfortable and have treated him very fairly as it relates to the market this year. We hope the deal gets done soon because this is not helping the Detroit Lions or Jordon Dizon.”

Second-round draft picks usually don’t hold out, and if they do, the holdout usually doesn’t last long. But from the way both sides are talking in this case, it sounds like everyone is willing to dig in. Dizon is a talented player, but his NFL career is not getting off to a positve start.
