Just when it seemed that the Packers and quarterback Brett Favre were trying to find a way to coexist, Favre finally has received permission to talk to another team about a possible trade.
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the team receiving such permission is the Jets, an AFC team not on the Packers’ schedule in 2008. (Unless they meet in the Super Bowl.)
Mort reports that the Buccaneers also have expressed interest. The Packers likely won’t grant Favre permission to talk to the Bucs or any other NFC team until all AFC trade possibilities have been exhausted.
The problem for the Jets is that, with this fairly large cat out of the bag, it will be very hard for the Jets to proceed without acquiring Favre.
Meanwhile, folks who were criticizing Commissioner Roger Goodell for getting involved in the situation will now have even more reason to suspect skullduggery, given that Favre could land with a New York team.
As our pal Dino Costa pointed out during a radio visit with him earlier this hour, it would be fitting for Favre to land with the Jets. Ron Wolf tried hard as a member of the Jets front office to position the team to draft Favre in 1991. A year later, Wolf was G.M. of the Packers, and swung a trade with the Falcons for Favre.
Seventeen years later, the Jets might finally be getting their guy.

Goodell and skulldugery, say it ain’t so. it’s not like he didn’t work for the Jets in the past. it’s not like the memo on videotaping was sent out in 2006, not 2007 and the Jets were caught illegally taping by the Pats in their playoff game. nothing was done about that, hmmm. then, the Pats get caught the next year against the Jets and it’s the end of the world. yeah, Goodell is as honest as they come.
NFL Videotaping Controversy Chronology
September 6, 2006
NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Ray Anderson writes in a memo to all 32 NFL teams, that videotaping is prohibited during the game.2
November 12, 2006
A New York Jets cameraman is caught taping by the Patriots in Gillette Stadium. When the story comes to light almost a year later, Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum tells the New York Daily News the story is “completely false.” In December 2007, Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini characterizes the story as true. Mangini calls permission for such taping a “common courtesy” which NFL clubs extend to one another – despite the fact that the Jets’ employee was apprehended by Patriots’ staff and told to leave.3 No documents have come to light specifying that “otherwise illegal taping with permission” enjoys any special category of immunity from league action.
December 10, 2006
The Miami Dolphins defeat the New England Patriots, using an enhanced-audio videotape Dolphins Coach Nick Saban says he got from television, and Dolphins players say he purchased:
“Reaction around the league office was, ‘That’s football,’ ” AFC spokesman Steve Alic said.4
Neither coach nor players said the tapes were obtained from a structure “…enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead,” as mandated by the NFL’s operations manual, as regards the shooting of video for coaching purposes.5 The enhanced video does seem to fit the League’s description of the product of information-gathering equipment for coaching purposes. In the league’s Constitution & Bylaws, it reads:
“Any use by any club at any time, from the start to the finish of any game in which such club is a participant, of any communications or information-gathering equipment, other than Polaroid-type cameras or field telephones, shall be prohibited, including without limitation videotape machines, telephone tapping, or bugging devices, or any other form of electronic devices that might aid a team during the playing of a game.”6
September 9, 2007:
Members of the New York Jets security staff confiscate a camera from New England Patriots employee Matt Estrella, and “cameragate” begins.7

Favre and the packers have been in discussion since earlier this week about potential trade teams . . .I’m sure this has been in motion since then. Favre probably already ok’d them as a potential destination.

Well, I see it as a win/win for Jets fans if the trade happens. Either their team goes to the playoffs or the overrated Mangini who really has done nothing in this league other than learn under Belichick will be fired. I am betting the latter to happen myself.

The question is whether Favre will want to talk with them. Didn’t he previously say he didn’t want to play for a team that sucked?
That would rule out the Jets. Then again, at this point he’s probably lowering his standards.
Favre on the Jets is definately an upgrade. The interceptions that Pennington throws are soft and easy for opposing teams to catch. Clemens throws his interceptions much harder. Favre still throws the hardest, and most accurate interceptions out of all of them. Gloves or some extra padding on opposing players’ numbers might be in order.

Good to hear! That’s exactly what they said when Ty Law was injured going into the playoffs years back when a no-name defense won the Super Bowl!
Too bad Samuel wasn’t sitting out against the Giants. If he doesn’t blow his coverage on Tyree, that catch never gets made and everyone’s feeling the hate for a 19-0 team.

Henry Plainview - I’m sure the Jets had no intention to use that videotape “during the playing of the game” as the rules previously read.
Of course, Goodell closed that loophole with his memo in September of 2006, so they would have been cheating.
Though I guess most ignorant fans would consider any taping prior to the memo which admitted the open loophole to be cheating as well - that’s why so many stupid fans like to claim that the Patriots were “cheating” in 2001, 2003, and 2004 during their Super Bowl victories.
Frankly I’ve always been quite impressed that the Patriots were able to cheat by breaking a 2006 rule back in 2001 - though most ignorant fans tend not to bother with such logic.

Yeah every time Jennings or Driver went 30 yards after taking a 2 yard pass, he was really carrying the team..

actually no, when bf throws a playof pick it is more like a high flying and far falling wounded duck into a centerfielder’s glove.
circa playoff losses to iggles and gynauts…
it does seem tampa is playing some game to jack up the bidding however.
bf going diva has to have driven down trade value/interest at least a little. i am sure the “just release brett” crowd is now warming up…

If the Giants received so much backlash for their plan of seat licenses at the new stadium, it will be much, much worse for the Jets when they too announce their plans. Giants have a base of season ticket holders going back 50-60. Jets don’t even have as well off fans as Giants do.
Getting Favre is a must for the Jets as they move into the new stadium NEXT year and that means Favre will be around at least 2 more years.

favrefromover(?) - I hear your passion, man. I really do. But, you are quite mistaken if you think Rodgers hasn’t been competing for that Starting Job. It’s, even now, being re-reported that last year Rodgers was proving that he deserved the Job over Favre last year and that’s from Jay Glazer. The deal here is to go with the guy who wins it in Training Camp as it alway has been. Am I a Favre-hater? Nothing of the sort. I even have Favre’s Plaque for 200 TD’s (it’s #8 of 200). I luv the guy to death, seriously. But, this primadonna routine is what’s got most Packerfans staying home as oppose to marching on Lambeau en masse. You know it, as well as any other diehard Cheesehead. Heck, most of us guys would damn sure dump a girlfriend who behaved that way. Where is it that Favre is above being grownup about this and behaving like a man, first & foremost? How does he rate a free pass? My take, is that when he faxes that paperwork, the first thing he does is state he will damn sure WIN BACK his J*O*B. It’s the class thing to do, period! It’s the righteous way to end his great career - with gusto!
Go Packers - Go IPB
