The New York Jets have agreed to terms with linebacker Vernon Gholston, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2008 draft.
Per Adam Schefter, it’s a five-year, $50 million deal with $21 million guaranteed.
The development clears the way for Chiefs defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey to do his deal at No. 5, since the floor has now been established.

Guess this means Dorsey will be signed in about 5 minutes.

I’m sorry, but there’s just no reason whatsoever for a rookie linebacker to be making 10 million a year with 21 million of that guaranteed. I don’t care how good this kid is going to be. That’s just ridiculous.
Gene Upshaw’s supposed to represent the interests of the players in the league. Well, the players in the league, aside from ten of them each year, want something to be done about this. This guy hasn’t played a snap in the NFL, and if he turns out to be a bust he’s walking away from it with $21 million. If he doesn’t change his tune, he’ll be out of a job damn soon.

At least report it right. Its a 5 year deal worth $32.5 million with escalators maxing out at $50 million. It looks ridiculous now, but if in a few years he is as good as Merriman, does $10 million look like too much? No. That said the system is obviously flawed because for every time he turns int a Merriman theres an equal chance he turns into Andre Wadsworth, and regardless hes pocketing $20+ Million.

As a Jets fan, I was glad tehy beat KC in the last game of the season to move from 3 to 6. Look at that guarenteed money. Yikes. 75% chance of bust in Ghloston. he is too inconsistant.

This’ll be interesting to see how it affects the future extensions of DeMarcus Ware and Shawne Merriman.

Omegalh, as a Pats fan I totally agree with you. Gholston has bust written all over him. I too am glad the Jets beat KC so they didn’t have the opportunity to draft Ryan, McFadden or Dorsey. Not to worry though, I have a feeling that your team has a chance at the first pick in the 2009 draft.

ampats, I’m not a huge Jets fan, but I definitely don’t think they’re gonna be anywhere near the 1st pick. That’s gotta be the Falcons, I don’t see any other team that could be nearly as bad. If the Jets’ offensive line will be as good this year as I think it can be, this team could end up 10-6. I don’t know why, they’re not a spectacular team, I just think they finally have the right personnel for a 3-4 defense which will do wonders for them this year. Just a gut feeling. I don’t think they make it past the 1st round of the playoffs if they make it there, they’re not quite there yet, but I think they have a chance to take a step in the right direction this year.
Imagine if they drafted McFadden, though. Their offense would’ve taken a huge jump forward. I guess it’s a shame for them, but it is what it is. You don’t blow games for better draft positions unless you’re the Pittsburgh Penguins.
