Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Packers quarterback Brett Favre plans to show up for training camp. In order to do so, he’ll first have to apply for reinstatement, via a letter that could be sent to Commissioner Roger Goodell as soon as Friday.
Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported earlier in the week that Goodell has advised the Packers that he will reinstate Favre upon request.
Schefter says that all indications are that Favre is returning with the intention of spending the season with the Packers.
But this could be a Jason Taylor-style attempt by the Packers and Favre to facilitate a trade by creating the impression that, if a suitable trade can’t be worked out, the Packers will keep him.
So our guess is that Favre and the team will do what they can to create the appearance that fences have mended, in the hopes that someone will offer up a package that the Packers deems to be suitable.
Still, will anyone buy it? Only eleven days ago, Favre said that he didn’t trust G.M. Ted Thompson, primarily because Thompson didn’t accept Favre’s advice on three occasion as to how Thompson should do his job.
Yeah, Favre on the Packers in 2008 will work out just fine. Eye roll. Cough. Fart. (Sorry, the cough made it slip out.)
Meanwhile, we’ve got a PFTV segment assessing the Favre situation. Though it could be a bit outdated in light of this latest development, you can at least watch it to see how right (or wrong) our comments might end up being.

Dear Mr. Thompson:
Respectfully submitted, please consider the following prior to trading Brett Favre.
Yesterday, Mike McCarthy said our goal this year is to “Win a World’s Championship.”
If our goal is to win a world’s championship, why would you consider adding a greater risk toward achieving our goal by not starting the most experienced and best talent at any position?
In yesterday’s wrap up Q&A, Mr. Murphy admitted that you believe the TEAM will compensate for any learning curve our QB may experience.
Are you not taking an unnecessary risk in looking away from Brett Favre’s experience? Perhaps if the “Team” played better last year, everyone would not look at the interception as the reason we lost to the Giants. Keep in mind, our TEAM, allowed them to tie the game and take us into overtime and win. And, if this year the team plays better as you must believe, better with the same QB, wouldn’t that make us a better team?
Is Aaron ready? You can answer this better than me, but as a former professional athlete I do know it’s easier to perform when the spotlight is not on you. And it is in my experience that ONLY experience helps you maintain a high level of performance when the spot light turns on you. You seem to be looking away from experience, why?
From an athlete’s perspective, it is a completely different scenario to perform at a high level when all the expectations around you are set so high. Favre has lived with this for 16 years - Aaron Rodgers has never experienced anything close to what he is walking into. (And why is he walking into this role and not earning it like every other person on the team?)
When all the game planning is built around you and you become the center of attention, Aaron’s performance may suffer. With Brett, he is a known entity and we know what we can expect. This should be making your job easier, not more as you said yesterday, “Distressing.”
How will Aaron Rodgers hold up to the pressure? Maybe good, maybe not so good. But why when Brett Favre can still play, do we have to find out now? Over 4,000 yards, 28 TDs and a passer rating of 95.7 just last year.
Are you working in the best interest of the team in helping us all achieve Mr. McCarthy’s goal of winning a world championship by not allowing Brett Favre to compete for the starting role?
I find it hard to believe we can consider ourselves contenders for any title with a rookie QB.
Please be prudent in the next few days and do what is best for helping us achieve our goal of bringing the Lombardi trophy back home.
Thank you!

I’m with BBrophy1 on the whole reinstatement deal. I guess what is still simply unclear is if Brett didn’t file retirement paperwork with the NFL, why does he have to file paperwork with the NFL to get back in? It shouldn’t matter that the Packers placed him on the reserve/retired list. They did that on their own without proper paperwork being filed with the league. As far as Goodell should be concerned, Brett didn’t retire.
That may be the way it is, but it just doesn’t make sense.

@gschwena7:
Elway and Favre are not on the same level. Elway actually did things that warranted his reputation as a phenom. Favre played a lot of games in a row. In baseball terms: Elway = Hank Aaron, Favre = Cal Ripken, Jr. Elway actually won it all, with basically no help. Favre could only do it with Holmgren, White, and a plethora of other HOFers. He never could win it without Holmgren.
Favre should stay away from football and stop embarassing himself. Two years ago, he was throwing 4-5 INTs a game and would have been pulled off the field if his name wasn’t Favre. Now he’s going to force the Packers to pay him so he can ride the pine? Pathetic. Dude, you’re old, let it go.
Favre is like that middle-aged burnout guy hanging around college parties - bumming around the keg, hogging the beer bong, and hitting on chicks half his age who find him physically repulsive. And then when the host asks him to leave, he just keeps hanging around anyway, embarassing everyone and making the whole place akward.

@favrefromover
—Bowling does not count as a professional sport no matter how many strikes you can bowl after 10 beers and two orders of fried cheese curds.
Plus are going to post your letter to Ted Thompson on every Packer thread.
@BBrophy1
It is paperwork and considering that the Packers were touch with Favre nearly the entire off-season. The Packers and Favre have been talking. Favre said he wanted back at one point and the Packers were ready to take him back. Then he changed his mind again. Then before the draft. Get over the they shouldn’t be able to do that.
@40for60
Are you okay? You going crazy?
@Seahawk4Life
Really Elway won two Super Bowl all by himself.
Yes because Terrell Davis and his 1750 yards didn’t help. Shannon Sharpe and his Rod Smith were just no bodies. That o-line they had was really good. That is just the offensive for one year. Plus don’t forgot they had salary cap violations that helped the team.
Please other than White give me one of the ‘plethora’ of HOF’ers.
Here is a roster of the Packers when they won the Super Bowl.

Since you won’t look outside of White, there isn’t any. Maybe Bulter but more than likely he won’t make into the Hall of Fame.
So your opinion is so off-base it is laughable.

By the way, how’s that Holmgren thing working out in Seattle? Ya’ll must have a TON of SUPER BOWL rings!! Didn’t ya’ll just get rid of your pro-bowl RB in Alexander and pick up a Dallas Cowboy retread?

I don’t get why Brett Favre feels as though he has the right to tell the GM how he should do his job.Imagine if you at your job told your boss how to do his job, whta kind of reation do you think you would get? I have also heard that the Commisioner is going to try to force the Packers to make a decision quickly. I don’t see how it’s any of his business. He doesn’t own the Packers nor is he in management for the team.The Packers hold Favre’s rights & aren’t obligated to do anything they don’t want to in reference to Favre. This whole thing is Favre’s fault so it’s really hard to feel bad for him.

Nothing worse than the farts that come out while coughing. I like how you happened to include Favre and Fart in the same story; they do go hand-in-hand.
