Earlier this year, the Bengals cut the cord on a third-round pick from 2005 who couldn’t properly behave off the field. The team now is cutting loose a second-rounder from 2007 who never got a chance to do much on the field.
The team has announced that running back Kenny Irons was waived after failing a physical. Last year, he suffered a serious knee injury during the preseason opener.
The Bengals could have placed Irons on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but he would have counted against the 80-man roster.
He’ll be entitled to receive up to $275,000 if no other team signs him. And, really, if he had any chance of playing football this year, the Bengals likely wouldn’t have cut him.
So the Bengals will proceed at the position with Rudi Johnson, DeDe Dorsey, Chris Perry, Kenny Watson, and rookie James Johnson.

At least we are to running backs right now as the Bucs are to quarterbacks. Too bad though.. I love Auburn Running backs and we could have used one who wasn’t lazy.

Have to wonder if in fact this is a result of the new 80 man roster. It’s been known he was facing a long rehab, are teams less likly to keep a player w/ 10 fewer bodies?

Attn Bengals Management. I would like to work for your organization as a General Manager. I do have extensive Fantasy Football and Madden experience. I also know that I can’t do any worse than you’ve been doing. Thank you.

Dear E-Nasty,
I don’t give a damn if you are the second coming of Christ himself. Your last name isn’t Brown, so you don’t get a job with the Bengals. If they hired competent people, what would the family do for a living?

this is a good example of why players demand more money with years remaining on their contract.

Just another high draft pick wasted…
Among high draft picks no longer (* or limited production) with the Bengals (by round):
2004: *Chris Perry (1), Keiwan Ratliff (2), Madieu Williams (2), Caleb Miller (3), Landon Johnson (3)
2005: David Pollack (1), Odell Thurman (2), Chris Henry (3)
The Bengals might actually have had a decent defense if any one or more of those players panned out according to the potential with which they were drafted. Thank goodness Mike Brown has ponied up and bolstered their scouting resources… oops! Why do I still root for them? Why?

Yeah the Bengals were so dumb to draft Irons. They should have know that he was going to tear up his knee his rookie year.

I’ll admit my first reaction was one of shock until I read the reasoning behind Bengal’s management’s decision.
Perhaps the sky isn’t falling after all? Read on, Chicken Littles:
Irons has lost 30 pounds, going from over 200 to the 170’s, and he isn’t going to play this season anyway. What rocket scientist GM is going to claim Irons on waivers to pay him 2nd round draft pick money to sit on their injured reserve list? The thinking is that Irons will clear waivers and re-sign with the Bengals for less, then go on IR while he continues to rehab, regain his weight and strength, and come back ready to go next season.

Thank you islebfrank. I was going to say the same thing. The mentality on this board is no matter what they do, bash the Bengals, even if it makes sense. They had to do this to get down to the 80 player minimum for camp.

bondem777, I feel your pain.
But when the Patriots do the same thing, it’s because of the genius of Bill Belichick! (12 guys on PUP)
I guess it will take more than one winning season in about the last 17 years to change the perception, lol.
