moonbeam: the fact I'm stating is that Favre is available now with the same scheme that worked last year, true that have to cater to a different style on QB with Rogers which I don't think will be as productive as last year!!! I hope the Pack step it up for the kid's sake but think they should stay with the proven winner in Brett!!!

No I am not those other people who also think Thompson and those directing him are to blame for the entire situation. Favre was repeatly called time and again way back in March to make up his mind whether to retire or not as they would have to "go another direction." They pressured and rushed, the man wh did so much for this team that was totally useless for close to 20 years before Favre got there. What class Thompson has!

Wow are you just missing the point on a few things.

1) Favre didn't put the Packers on the map Ron Wolf did. Favre wasn't even the biggest move he made IMO. It might be 1A, but hiring Holmgren was very key and under the wrong guy Favre may not have become the QB he did. Holmgren had the system and knowledge to turn him into the QB he become. Heck Reggie White could even be in play, for making it okay to play in Green Bay and showing the world that Green Bay could play the FA game.

2. Actually yes Thompson did help with the success of the Packers before he become the GM. Read his bio and you will see he was with the Packers before he went to Seattle and he was one of the guys that MH took with him Seattle. I wonder why? For Bob S. (are you two the same) Thompson was key in building the Seattle Super Bowl team, so the guy knows a bit about building a team.

3. It is well know that Thompson has been trying to get rid of him in NFL circles? Are you part of these circles, what articles can point me to. Further more there is a ton of press out there that speaks otherwise even from Favre himself. When Thompson first took over, he went down there and help him make the decision to come back. Same again when McCarthy was hired. #3 is so off-based I almost feel like I am wasting my time, because if you truly believe this and the NFL Circle part you are never going to see the truth.

4. The Packers started this. Yeah okay. Yes it was the Packers and not Bus Cook or Favre's mother or Favre's brother that leaked it. He wanted to come back, he got in touch with the Packers and this last time they told him we have moved on. Then the leaks started. Plus it was Favre himself that hinted to this. The interview on Letterman for example. Don't think that because Favre isn't talking that things are not getting leaked to the press on his behalf.

You truly are a lost soul and I fee sorry for you.

Odd. The reports I've heard were that Thompson was supported. The few that shouted out must have been the 20 people or so who have shown up to picket in favor of Favre

Boob S.,

You have absolutely no clue. Thompson came HIGHLY recommended from Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren, but what would they know? Thompson has clearly proven he is one of the best GM's in the NFL with the roster he has assembled.

McCarthy has clearly proven tremendously that he is one of the best coaches in the NFL. Ask Vikings' fans who they would rather have, Brad Childress or McCarthy. The answer is easy if you read the St. Paul Pioneer Press and Minneapolis Star Tribune. The guy Favre wanted? Well, I guess no one else wanted Marriucci either since he's, you know, sitting in a studio with all of the other guys no one wants.

Woodson getting $10 million in the first year of his contract, not in a signing bonus that can be prorated but salary, straight up that counted $10 million against the cap last season. What a tight ass Thompson is.

Ryan Pickett gets a 4 year, $14 million deal. Thomspon's still a tight ass.

McCarthy getting $5 million per year, that sure is stingy.

Donald Driver's new deal, Barnett's new deal, Al Harris getting an extension, Donald Lee, Brady Poppinga, soon Ryan Grant. Etc, etc, etc.

The Packers have no problem paying Favre's $12 million salary. Favre's the one with the problem that he doesn't want to compete for the starting job. Great career Favre, you created this mess and the team and the sensible Packers' fans and the rest of the country see the real deal.

Comment:
Bob S., how the hell does how much money Thompson made as a player have anything to do with him being a quality GM?

--------

What I meant is Thompson was only hired in the first place because he was cheap and because he is willing to follow whatever orders the board gives him. And for that matter that's also why they hired an inexperienced head coach as well. And why the team in recent years refused to sign top name or big name free agents. If Favre is out of there $12 million a year is slashed frm their expenses - and even you know the Packers won't spend a dollar of this savings on getting other players.

killer fins fan
let's go to the facts, mike mccarthy changed bret favre's
approach to the game of football.from there they built the
team around him.it takes eleven people to push everything
accross the goal line, favre is just 9% of the effort.
the ten other players must be good (dominate)also.

Can we please knock off the "Favre's interception is the reason they didn't go to the Super Bowl" talk, as if he did nothing but detract from the team's season? While it's true that the season ended with a really, really bad mistake by Favre, he did so much over the course of that season that got the Packers in a position to play in the NFC title game. Besides, how can you act as if that one play truly defined that whole game? I would argue that the Packers had ample opportunities to take an insurmountable lead throughout the game and could very well have beaten the Giants. The TEAM's mistakes (with the most timely and memorable being Favre's interception) cost the Packers that game. If the Packers players as a group (Favre included) perform better earlier in the game, maybe they don't go to overtime at all. The best teams don't let it come down to the wire. The best teams get the lead and keep the lead.

I hate it when people try to pin a loss on one player/one play at the end of the game. As a Bears fan, I've seen Rex Grossman make 489 mistakes per game, but few of them were as timely or prominent as Favre's NFC title game interception. That causes us to talk about it as if Favre did nothing but detract from his team's season. Which one would you rather have under center? As I'm watching the "epic" quarterback battle between Orton and Grossman, I'd take Favre and his 1 most-prominent interception, 4,000+ yards, and 28 TDs any day. (I'd tell him to bring a couple of receivers with him...)

hey moonbeam... the Pack go there because Farve helped them be 13-3
one mistake or one great catch changes the game that is why we are fans of the game, ie, Tyree's awesome catch over Harrison to beat the Patsies!!! I'm just stating that as all new starting QB's in the leauge that they'll need 2 years to get it together & Green Bay has a winner almost there now with Favre!!!

"Will Thompson ever be a NFL Hall of Fame GM like real GMs are? I kinda think that Berty Farve will never make the money running teams that TT has for much the same reasons.

This is significant and have been waiting to see how the shareholders would behave today. This type of treatment Thompson deserves, if for no other reason for the way he's handling this and for dragging the rest of us through the mud, instead of resolving the Favre situation behind closed doors.

More here...

Big deal, Thompson isn't answerable to the riff raff that showed up for the shareholders meeting. His bosses are still the board of directors and the original shareholders.

Well, somebody is being misleading in their reporting. Sal Pal of ESPN said that Thompson and McCarthy received standing ovations and that there were very few booing Thompson. Hmm

Bottom line is at the heart of the "bring back brett" rally less than 50 people showed up. What does that tell you? Minimal support, at best, for Favre.

Think of this way: If the Pats cut Brady or the Colts cut Manning thousands of people would show up. Heck, if this were 2000 then thousands would've shown up in support for Brett.

Support in GB is clearly in TT's corner.

Hey MDS,

I think you have been unfairly accused of being Mr. Mike Florio in a couple of these posts. We have never known you to be Florio up to now, and I don't believe that's the case now.

Second, I want to call attention to the local gazette readers posting here who seem to distrust the coverage with the thought they are close to the team management for info for stories and such. It wouldn't be the first time.

Finally, the pattern I observe on the commentary on Favre is that the national audience is not too sypmathetic to the player. But locally in Wisconsin it seems like everything points to a very supportive fan base that wants to seem Brett come back and lead the team. The players seem to support him as well...

I was at the shareholders meeting. There were a few people booing and making Anti TT comments but not very many. Most did applaude for TT.
One board member who is retiring this year even had a great comment "I told Mark Murphy that I wouldn't ask to be traded to another team after I retire". Most people laughed at that one. It was easy to see who there few uneducated fans were, the ones who booed and were making stupid comments about TT. It was actually a very nice time and most fans were supportive of TT and the entire team.
No way was it 3/4 of the crowd booing, very small group you could barely hear over the clapping.

There is no winners here. What seems to be lost in all this mess are the simple facts:

1. After Lombardi and before Favre the Packers were crap. Favre put the Packers back on the map. You think if Aaron Rogers were the starting QB they would of earned enough money to renovate the stadium? Who did? Thats right Brett Favre.

2. Did Thompson help with the success of the Packers the last decade? No. Who did? Thats right Brett Favre. Only thing Thompson did was runout the legend Packer players and Favre is just his next victim.

3. It is well known in NFL circles that Thompson has been trying to get rid of Favre for years now and he finally got his chance to get rid of him and try and save face. Only to have Favre pull a 1-80 and put Thompson back on the hot seat. How does it feel Thompson? You will be the next one sent packing!

4. For all the Favre haters you all fail to remember who started all this crap. The Packers. They leaked out that Favre wanted back and instead of going to the media Favre sent a text to a friend to try and keep it quiet. Then the media went crazy and made Favre the lead story EVERY day. The only time we heard from Favre was on the Fox News Interview. Yet we continued to hear comments from the Packers brass. Even since his interview Favre has not talked, but the Packers do. So before you blame Favre for all the media hype don't forget to point the finger at the ones who continue this madness and that is the Packers and the media.

5. Finally, for what Favre has done for the Packers they should step up and be men about it and say "You know what Brett we value what you did so we will honor your request" and release him. Instead they want to say he can be a backup or try and trade him to a crappy team in honor of 'protecting his legacy'. The Packers organization are a joke and I hope Favre is traded to Tampa Bay then traded the next day to Minnesota or Chicago. Now that would be a fitting end to this story!

"When all is said and done if Rodgers can’t do what Favre did last year - those who claimed they supported Thompson will be never heard from again."

LOL. Nobody except Favre Homers are expecting that out of Rodgers in his first year. Most rational and objective people understand that's he's a first year starter and that there will be growing pains. They also realize that favre has bene very underwhelming the 2nd half of his career and that last year was the exception with Brett Favre, NOT the norm. I swear, you guys are actually hoping the Packers will lose next year. The Favre homers are placing the player before the team.....and proving they are not actually Packers fans but, rather, simply Brett Favre fans.

@46and2

"Shareholders updates: Thompson signs autographs in Atrium" How does that headline seem to indicate that it was pro Favre. Furthermore if you say ahh they changed the headline in the 2 hours, what in that article seems to say pro Favre. The quotes at the end? There were probably triple the quotes the other way, it's not like that was a large sample. Please leave your parent's basement.

@ BobS

Did you read your BS of a post before you hit submit. Yes Thompson skill or lack of skill as a player has a direct impact on his ability as a GM. Just like great players always make great coaches.

I for one will not in the short term change my opinion about Ted Thompson. Even if Rodgers does tank it, Thompson has done plenty right so far. His future does not hang on one event.

Lastly who are these people that run the Packers? You don't even know, yet thanks to the internet you have a way to spout your uninformed opinion. Your ignorance is quite clear and in a way funny.

This is laughable. I love it when fans of other teams weigh in on topics they really have no knowledge of. This PFT article was a hasty generalization (which is fine). TT is not the devil and neither is Favre. They're both at fault for the way they handled this. The support for TT comes from the fact that whether aaron rodgers sucks or not, he has built a very, very good and young team in a short time. In the NFC north it would only take an average QB to take them to the playoffs. The Bears suck, the lions suck, and the queens have 3/4 of a team (unfortunatley it will be tough to win with no QB and no WR).

Bob S., how the hell does how much money Thompson made as a player have anything to do with him being a quality GM? Are you saying Brett Favre, once fully retired, will be one of the best GM's ever?

The truth is that Thompson built this team around Favre, and that is what delivered the Pack to the NFC title game. Right now he is trying to balance what is best for the team with Brett's desire to come back. That is no walk in the park. What's lost in all this is that many Packer fans - myself included - are in full support of both TT and Brett. I'd like to see Favre come back, but not at the expense of the franchise.

And whoever said we shareholders don't have any real power - try telling that to an OLD Cleveland Browns or Houston Oilers fan.

What the hell does not being as highly paid a football player as Favre have to do with Thompson's ability to GM? That makes no sense.

As a Packers fan and shareholder (though not at the meeting today), I have full faith in TT and MM. Favre did not get us to the NFC title game all by himself, and they are trying to balance their duty to the franchise with Brett's desire to come back.

My guess is that the shareholder's meeting did not boo Ted Thompson, but just because they cheered him doesn't mean they don't support Brett. He's right, we're family, and we'll get through this.

If getting a standing ovation is being rough on a person, then yeah, we were rough on Thompson. Nothing is ever lost in the telling, that is for sure.

Support for Favre muted as Pack shareholders meet
By CHRIS JENKINS, Associated Press

Last update: July 24, 2008 - 1:17 PM

GREEN BAY, Wis. - There were plenty of No. 4 jerseys in the stands and a smattering of jeers for general manager Ted Thompson at Thursday morning's annual meeting of Green Bay Packers shareholders at Lambeau Field.

But the meeting hardly turned into a bring-back-Brett Favre rally.

Most of the 9,375 shareholders attending the meeting pleasantly applauded Thompson and team president and CEO Mark Murphy, then gave a raucous standing ovation to head coach Mike McCarthy. The reaction seemed to indicate that many of the fans who own a tiny stake in the team they love are backing the front office in its ongoing standoff with the semiretired franchise quarterback.

Shareholders? Oh, please. The so-called Packers shareholders have as much power as the Royal Family has in the UK. Just a nice sounding title and no real power.

When all is said and done if Rodgers can't do what Favre did last year - those who claimed they supported Thompson will be never heard from again.

If Bears only had a QB and Lions a GM, Thompson's Packers would have the basement to themselves and for as long as he is there.

Favre forgot more about football when he was 25 than that career perrennial special teams player ever will know about the NFL.

Will Thompson ever be a NFL Hall of Fame GM like real GMs are? Face it- only reason Thompson got the job - those cheapskates who run the Packers hired him to do WHATEVER THEY ORDER - and of course he took the job. He had never made the money playing footbal Favre had earned because Favre unlike him, was very skilled.

Thompson is nothing more than hired help. That board doesnt want to pay another $12 million this year.

there are conflicting reports all over the internet on this one, some say its anti favre, some say its pro favre. the above cited press gazzette (live blog found here http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080724/PKR01/80724040/1058 ) headline seems to indicate that it was pro favre, but if you actually read it, it only says a few people screamed it. and a newspaper can always find one dude in the crowd that supports a viewpoint. "His wife, Patti, doesn’t agree. “Trade Ted instead,” she said. “If you’re going to make it to the Super Bowl, it won’t be with Aaron Rodgers.” "

i think the honest way to report this one is to say that reports are conflicted, and the fanbase is conflicted. cuz it is. as a die hard packer fan for most of my natural born life, i know alot of other packer fans. hell, i sleep on packer sheets. story is different everywhere you look, and this "shareholders meeting" (a glorified press conference when it comes to this team) could be spun in either direction. I dont know why you spun it pro favre, but id imagine you have as much of an agenda as your frequently skewered Len Pasquerelli had with the falcons during the Vick saga...

"TT and McChunky are going to villify themselves and look the
idiots they really are. I can hardly wait until Aaron ‘fresh meat’ Rogers gets under center….. "

The only person villifying himself right now is favre. TT is always going to be the villain....thats the GM's job...to make the unpopular decision that makes the team better. don't forget, he built the team in seattle that went on to go to the superbowl.

there is no doubt in my mind that there were vocal people at th eshareholders meeting...this is a very divisive issue and there are strong feelings both ways on it. but as one person said, the people that are happy with what TT is doing arent going to be chiming up....just the unhappy ones. and to the person who said something about filing suit...packers share owners have non-voting shares. they have a board of directors that vote on all the ins and outs of the team. and the last time i checked, they are standing behind the decisions made by the guy they just gave a contract extension to.

Yes the Packers were 1 game from the Super Bowl but guess who threw a terrible int. in overtime to end that dream? Favre did, have any of you seen the aerial photo of that play when he threw the int.? I have and all I can say is that it was brutal, he was locked in on 1 receiver and threw it to him even tho he was double covered, plus there was 1 receiver that was wide open (I believe it was Jones)that very well could have scored on the play had it been thrown to him. I am a huge Favre fan but dammit it is time to move on and go with Rodgers especially with the way Favre has waffled on retirement for the past 3 seasons. Go Pack go, TT and MM you are doing great jobs. Thank you.

EmmitsEnglishTeacher and the hundreds of other people who bring this up: For the LAST time, Packers' stock is NOT an actual share of ownership in the corporation. Stockholders do not have trading privileges, voting rights, nor do they earn dividends. Stock sales have been used by the Packers at least three times in their history to raise funds. A share of stock looks nice on the wall and gets you invited to an annual pep rally at the Lambeau Atrium (before that it was in the bleachers in the bowl). Consequently, "stockholders" are not owners and can't do anything about the team anymore than any other fan can. It's a fundraiser/feel-good/David-and-Goliath/small-town publicity gimmick.

BTW is anybody else not surprised that Favre wants to work under Darrell Bevell, who, when he was the QB coach, presided over Favre's worst year? My guess is that Favre is looking for that hands-off star treatment he got used to under Sherman & Co. which was rightfully taken away by McCarthy's staff--but which helped get Favre his stellar 2007 season (not to mention James Jones, Greg Jennings and a re-signed Donald Driver.

Hey Florio,
You need to check your sources, quoting Green Bay Press Gazette "When Thompson walked to the podium, there were more cheers than boos, and a majority of the shareholders stood to applaud him.
When Thompson finished, there was only audible applause."
I have never been a huge Thompson supporter, but on this as a lifelong Packers, and I emphasize Packers (not Favre cultist), I, as with the silent majority out there, support him 100% in this. Favre has been jerking this franchise around for over 3 years now with his indecisiveness. He is nothing but a diva that has hid behind a well crafted good ol boy persona. Everyone from coast to coast and thoughout professional sports has now come to see this and has weighed in on it with the vast majority confirming as much. No one can deny his talent and what he has meant to the Packers. But no one player should be able to hold an entire organization hostage and sabotage its future as he has for the past 2 years. What would happen if he is let back and the Favre of 2005 and 2006 shows up (4-12, 8-8). Then will the same vocal minority be there to call for him to hang it up.

Press-Gazette is full of rubes who allow themselves to be used by Packers management just so they can be the first to be thrown bits of information.

The 'shareholders' are scared to death that TT is running this organization into the ground without waiting for the hole to get dug. After the dust has settled from this Favre fiasco, TT might just get shown as the pig headed sloth he truly is.

I don't know what meeting the PFT reader or the Press Gazette went to. I just got back from the shareholder's meting. When Ted was introduced at the meeting in the Lambeau Field bowl, there were a very small smattering of boos that quickly got drowned out by general applause, with at least half of the 13,000 in attendance giving him a standing ovation. Generally, the fans were either very supportive or at least sitting on their hands, and I saw nothing that could be considered "hostile" to Ted. Much different than what has been reported on this site.

After the meeting, GM Ted Thompson, Pres Mark Murphy, and other Packer officials went to the Lambeau Field atrium to answer personal questions from the shareholders. During that time, a chant of "Bring Brett Back" started to echo through the hall, but it died out after 20 seconds. My impression is that while there were a lot of #4 jerseys to be seen, the vocal Brett Favre fans were a very small minority, and that the majority of fans, like the organization, have, for better or worse, moved on.

Does anyone else just feel terrible for Rodgers?? That poor guy is in a no win situation. He might be good with his next team after the Packer fans and media run him out of dodge. I hope that kid has some tough skin.
