As Packers General Manager Ted Thompson awkwardly attempts to keep the fans happy while keeping the franchise’s most popular player away, he had a rough go of it today at the team’s shareholders’ meeting.
Multiple reports indicate that the majority of the thousands of shareholders who showed up today in Green Bay were anti-Thompson and pro-Brett Favre.
The Green Bay Press Gazette reports that Thompson was greeted by a number of fans shouting, “Bring Brett back.” And a PFT reader who attended the meeting estimated that three-fourths of those in attendance were booing Thompson.
For his part, Thompson tried to stay positive and look forward, not backward.
“We are family here, but family sometime disagree. But we’ll always be family,” he said. ” We’re very excited about this team coming forward.”

A lot of times in these situations some jerkoff attorney files a lawsuit saying the team is f’n me over but completely lacks standing. Since the fans truly own the Packers why isn’t someone filing a shareholders suit or some crap like that to get Farve back as starting QB? Can’t take more than a pair of pants to become an attorney up in those parts. As fatass-crass Berman would say, “tick tick tick tick tick….”

Yeah, of course a PFT reader said that it makes good PFT fodder. Suppose that clown was “Pro Favre” as well.

People content with the management are far less likely to voice their opinion. I’m not saying there is a silent majority in this instance, but I think it’s something to keep in mind.

You know, us Packer fans are so sick of hearing about Brett Favre right now, but when the season opens I would love to have him at QB. People might be siding with Thompson in July, but come September, with that brutal schedule, Favre is the one I want calling the signals.

I don’t know what meeting the PFT reader or the Press Gazette went to. I just got back from the shareholder’s meting. When Ted was introduced at the meeting in the Lambeau Field bowl, there were a very small smattering of boos that quickly got drowned out by general applause, with at least half of the 13,000 in attendance giving him a standing ovation. Generally, the fans were either very supportive or at least sitting on their hands, and I saw nothing that could be considered “hostile” to Ted. Much different than what has been reported on this site.
After the meeting, GM Ted Thompson, Pres Mark Murphy, and other Packer officials went to the Lambeau Field atrium to answer personal questions from the shareholders. During that time, a chant of “Bring Brett Back” started to echo through the hall, but it died out after 20 seconds. My impression is that while there were a lot of #4 jerseys to be seen, the vocal Brett Favre fans were a very small minority, and that the majority of fans, like the organization, have, for better or worse, moved on.

Hey Florio,
You need to check your sources, quoting Green Bay Press Gazette “When Thompson walked to the podium, there were more cheers than boos, and a majority of the shareholders stood to applaud him.
When Thompson finished, there was only audible applause.”
I have never been a huge Thompson supporter, but on this as a lifelong Packers, and I emphasize Packers (not Favre cultist), I, as with the silent majority out there, support him 100% in this. Favre has been jerking this franchise around for over 3 years now with his indecisiveness. He is nothing but a diva that has hid behind a well crafted good ol boy persona. Everyone from coast to coast and thoughout professional sports has now come to see this and has weighed in on it with the vast majority confirming as much. No one can deny his talent and what he has meant to the Packers. But no one player should be able to hold an entire organization hostage and sabotage its future as he has for the past 2 years. What would happen if he is let back and the Favre of 2005 and 2006 shows up (4-12, 8-8). Then will the same vocal minority be there to call for him to hang it up.

EmmitsEnglishTeacher and the hundreds of other people who bring this up: For the LAST time, Packers’ stock is NOT an actual share of ownership in the corporation. Stockholders do not have trading privileges, voting rights, nor do they earn dividends. Stock sales have been used by the Packers at least three times in their history to raise funds. A share of stock looks nice on the wall and gets you invited to an annual pep rally at the Lambeau Atrium (before that it was in the bleachers in the bowl). Consequently, “stockholders” are not owners and can’t do anything about the team anymore than any other fan can. It’s a fundraiser/feel-good/David-and-Goliath/small-town publicity gimmick.
BTW is anybody else not surprised that Favre wants to work under Darrell Bevell, who, when he was the QB coach, presided over Favre’s worst year? My guess is that Favre is looking for that hands-off star treatment he got used to under Sherman & Co. which was rightfully taken away by McCarthy’s staff–but which helped get Favre his stellar 2007 season (not to mention James Jones, Greg Jennings and a re-signed Donald Driver.
Disgruntled GB resident and “stockholder”

Yes the Packers were 1 game from the Super Bowl but guess who threw a terrible int. in overtime to end that dream? Favre did, have any of you seen the aerial photo of that play when he threw the int.? I have and all I can say is that it was brutal, he was locked in on 1 receiver and threw it to him even tho he was double covered, plus there was 1 receiver that was wide open (I believe it was Jones)that very well could have scored on the play had it been thrown to him. I am a huge Favre fan but dammit it is time to move on and go with Rodgers especially with the way Favre has waffled on retirement for the past 3 seasons. Go Pack go, TT and MM you are doing great jobs. Thank you.

“TT and McChunky are going to villify themselves and look the

The only person villifying himself right now is favre. TT is always going to be the villain….thats the GM’s job…to make the unpopular decision that makes the team better. don’t forget, he built the team in seattle that went on to go to the superbowl.
there is no doubt in my mind that there were vocal people at th eshareholders meeting…this is a very divisive issue and there are strong feelings both ways on it. but as one person said, the people that are happy with what TT is doing arent going to be chiming up….just the unhappy ones. and to the person who said something about filing suit…packers share owners have non-voting shares. they have a board of directors that vote on all the ins and outs of the team. and the last time i checked, they are standing behind the decisions made by the guy they just gave a contract extension to.

“GREEN BAY, Wis. — There were plenty of No. 4 jerseys in the stands and a smattering of jeers for general manager Ted Thompson at Thursday morning’s annual meeting of Green Bay Packers shareholders at Lambeau Field.
But the meeting hardly turned into a bring-back-Brett Favre rally.
Most of the 9,375 shareholders attending the meeting pleasantly applauded Thompson and team president and CEO Mark Murphy before giving a raucous standing ovation to head coach Mike McCarthy. The reaction seemed to indicate that many of the fans who own a tiny stake in the team they love are backing the front office in its ongoing standoff with the semiretired franchise quarterback.”
Hmmmm guess not so anti-thompson after all, atleast according to ESPN.

there are conflicting reports all over the internet on this one, some say its anti favre, some say its pro favre. the above cited press gazzette (live blog found here http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080724/PKR01/80724040/1058 ) headline seems to indicate that it was pro favre, but if you actually read it, it only says a few people screamed it. and a newspaper can always find one dude in the crowd that supports a viewpoint. “His wife, Patti, doesn’t agree. “Trade Ted instead,” she said. “If you’re going to make it to the Super Bowl, it won’t be with Aaron Rodgers.” ”
i think the honest way to report this one is to say that reports are conflicted, and the fanbase is conflicted. cuz it is. as a die hard packer fan for most of my natural born life, i know alot of other packer fans. hell, i sleep on packer sheets. story is different everywhere you look, and this “shareholders meeting” (a glorified press conference when it comes to this team) could be spun in either direction. I dont know why you spun it pro favre, but id imagine you have as much of an agenda as your frequently skewered Len Pasquerelli had with the falcons during the Vick saga…
