Broncos receiver Rod Smith, one of the last remaining links to the team’s Super Bowl-winning seasons and arguably the greatest undrafted free agent receiver to ever play the game, formally retired on Thursday.
“I gave them everything I had,” Smith said during the emotional press conference.
Smith spent twelve years with the Broncos, last playing in 2006. He finishes his career with 849 receptions for 11,389 yards and 85 touchdowns.
In 1995, Smith made an immediate impression on first-year coach Mike Shanahan, who was struck by Smith’s ability to compete at the NFL level. “You keep looking and saying, ‘Why can’t they cover this guy?”‘ Shanahan said. “Then you say, ‘Holy cow, I’ve got myself a football player.’”
Smith’s case is further proof that, in the end, all those hours of watching film and viewing practice and clicking stopwatches don’t matter. The only way to know how college players will perform at the next level is to put them there, and to see who sinks — and who swims.
Smith swam, incredibly well. The Broncos and the sport will miss him.

Borderline Hall-of-Famer. I think he deserves to be inducted, but I also think that Harold Carmichael and Andre Reed should be in…..

“…arguably the greatest free agent receiver to ever play the game.”
Great team guy and on-the-field leader as well. Do his statistics and his undrafted status add up to the Hall of Fame, Mr. Mike?

Probably second to maybe Antonio Gates (for catching footballs, not necessarily the position).

Great player. Great player. The game will miss him. What I remember about him is that every time I caught an AFC West game with the Broncos (which wasn’t much since I’m in an NFC East City,) Rod Smith made a difference in the game. He was very clutch.

from the first time i saw him when he ended the resskins game in 1995 i think rod smith played with as much heart as anyone i have ever seen in any sport…he was an amzaing football player ..113 catches in 2001 with virtually no help at all ( he & eddie mac may be the most underrated receiving combination )…& his blocking
dont know if he will make the hall of fame but he made mine
thanks rod…

The Gipper,
He may have more receptions than 18/19 HoF wide receivers, but think about how many will be inducted in the next 15 years that have more receptions than him. He’ll be compared to his peers, no doubt.

Nice post, Florio. Well done.
I compare Smith to Michael Irvin (the stats are similar- both won multiple Super Bowls), and would put him in the hall. One of his greatest accomplishments: acheiving what he did without a premiere QB (except for his first few years with Elway, of course).
Seriously, Brian Griese, Jake the Flake, Gus Frerotte, and a young Jay Cutler. Not exactly conducive to big numbers.

Rod may have more catches than guys in the HOF but the game has changed. You cant really compare guys from back in the days to todays game. It isnt fair. Im not saying he shouldnt be a HOF’er. I wonder if being a Free agent will help him get the ok for the HOF.

Not even a Broncos fan but any true football fan can appreciate Rod Smith’s career. I’ll go out and say it since everyone else is ducking it: he is the greatest undrafted player in NFL history. Great numbers, a true leader by example and a couple of rings for his efforts. On top of that, he’s taking Marshall under his wing which I think is great. I’d hate to see a talent like him go to waste on some dumb shullbit.
Kudos to you, Rod Smith and your terrific career. You definitely left a mark.

well obviously. i was just pointing out a little known fact. just like how he had his contracts structured to give him team based insentives and not individual ones. if he put up a monster year he didnt get any bonus’s, but if the team had a good year then he got bonus’s, and thats exactly how he wanted it.
he was the definition of “team player”.

Too bad the Broncos had to cheat on the Salary cap to win their Super Bowls. Smith is a standup guy and doesn’t deserve the asterisk.

I read this post 4 times, however I could not find any disparaging remarks about coach Shanahan despite the obvious inclusion of the word “Broncos.” Please Florio…the blatent disregard for PFT protocol
will not be tolorated in the future.
Oh yeah…Rod Smith: Sraight up stud! Hope he makes it to canton.

It is a shame Smith will never make the hall of fame, in terms of people who worked their way up, he started behind most and ended ahead of them all. His career numbers would be impressive for a first overall pick, but considering he started life as an undrafted free agent with a year on the practice squad available to any other team, his numbers are just mind boggling.
Here is to one of the greats of the game, could we only have more like him and fewer like Chris Henry.

Anybody that doesn’t like this guy is following the sport for the wrong reason. Good player, good person. I hope he stays in the game in some capacity to teach some of these knuckleheads how to be pros.

However, I think he’ll eventually get in. Not first ballot tho (especially since the other guys who will be eligible when he is)

actually you’re wrong about this. they asked some of the players if they could defered payments to the players with interest to pay for their stadium, and the players said yes. they were under the cap and had everyone signed already. this was just to deal with seasonal cash flow problems so they would have more cash on hand for the staduim and didnt have anything to do with the product on the field.
even if they didnt do it they still would have fielded the same team. their staduim just wouldnt have got built on time.
it had nothing to do with keeping players and everything to do with building the stadium.
mabe you should research things before you run your mouth.
