At the start of the off-season the Lions shipped defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Browns in exchange for cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round draft pick. Now the Lions have ensured that the 26-year-old Bodden will play the prime years of his career in Detroit.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Lions have reached an agreement with Bodden on a four-year, $27 million contract extension.
Bodden has two years left on his current contract at base salaries of $1.7 million in 2008 and $1.8 million in 2009. But the Lions have given him a hefty raise in order to keep him around and keep him happy.
Per Schefter, Bodden will receive a $2 million signing bonus immediately and an option bonus of $8.6 million at the beginning of March. The option bonus is not guaranteed, meaning if Bodden has a bad year, the team could cut him loose and let him become an unrestricted free agent on the first day of the 2009 league year.
If the Lions do exercise the option bonus, Bodden will be under contract through the 2013 season.

sounds like a pretty one-year deal.

This is a good signing by Detroit. One of the few smart moves that Millen has made. Getting a 3rd and an 80 tackle CB perfect for a cover 2 scheme was good, but signing him to a 4 year extension is great.
So was drafting Kevin Smith. Is Millen actually smartening up a bit, or did he let his wife make these choices?
(Is Millen married, I mean other than to William Clay Ford Sr.)

He’ll be down with a season ending injury by the start of the season. What a stiff.

The Lions’ front office also contends that a victory on Thanksgiving is much more glorious than a winning a Super Bowl. “Anybody can win the Super Bowl,” a high ranking Detroit staffer said, “but it takes a special kind of team to wallow in mediocrity 15 games a year, yet rise above on a day when a national audience eagerly watches, in between bouts of turkey induced unconciousness.”

Nice. I wonder if this pushes any cap money into next year to make room for Spikes? The Lions will have tons of cap room next year once CRog and BMW are off the books finally, but they’re working at about only $1 million in space right now (which is probably one of the biggest reasons Spikes hasn’t been signed yet, the other being because he probably has better options).

As a fan of his former team, congrats to the one corner that could actually shut up and shut down Chad Johnson.
Good for him. I hope he stays healthy.

The Lions actually got the better end of that trade. Bodden in a Cover-2 is a waste, though. He’s a pretty darn good cover corner.

You may be correct, NoWearMan, in saying he’ll come down with a season ending injury by the start of the season. At least he’s not in Cleveland anymore - ensuring he won’t come down with a staph infection.

TheBozforPres,
Where have YOU been? We have also been stinking up our own “Superbowl” the last few years (actually, our SB is the draft….but even that has not been too great over the last decade). We only keep having it because it is a 50 year tradition……
BUT, all that changes this year minus Rogers and plus Bodden / Smith….. Playoff bound…..I hope….LOL.

As much as it pains me to say it (as a Seahawks fan), I do wish Detroit some success. You fans have been through alot.
Well-said Lion-Down, good luck this year.
Of course, if you did win it, team ownership would likely celebrate by drafting all wide receivers the following year.
