A league source tells us that there are rumblings that Eagles guard Shawn Andrews might not show up for training camp, apparently due to displeasure with his contract.
Andrews is another one of the young Eagles players who signed an early-career contract that extends into the next decade. In Andrews’ case, he’s signed through 2015.
The first-round pick in the 2004 draft is due to earn a base salary of $2.98 million in 2008. And if he thinks that’s too low, he’ll be really pissed off in 2009, when his base salary drops to $750,000.
If he doesn’t report, he’ll be subject to fines of more than $15,000 per day, and he could be required to pay back a portion of the bonus money.

The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that “Andrews’ agent, Rich Moran (which is the sort of thing we old-media types still like to do, rather than just throwing rumors up on the internet to raise sand). Moran said Andrews will not be at Lehigh tonight, but it is “100 percent wrong” to say his absence has anything to do with his contract. Moran said Andrews is dealing with a personal matter. He would not elaborate, other than to say it isn’t the kind of personal matter where you check into rehab, or anything.”

““I’m not the one who got tired in the Superbowl” Yeah jackass because you hardly played in the Super Bowl”
Played long enough to get 9 catches, didn’t he?
“He also managed to score a couple of touchdowns while you didn’t.”
He also managed to not throw any interceptions while McGagg threw three. And I haven’t even mentioned puking in the huddle. Yet.

“What if he had been a complete dud and was making $3 million this season? I bet you the Eagles wouldn’t be asking for him to re-structure his contract.”
Yea, they’d just cut him. Hold-outs are the only way players have leverage. There’s going to be a point in the near-future where fans are going to get irritated (thanks to some agitation from sports-talk radio guys) with player hold-outs, where they cite how much they players are making, but everything’s relative, baby.
The Eagles can’t dish out ridiculous 11 year contracts and expect players who out-play them to be satisfied with them while they cut players who don’t live up to them.

apparently PFT got this all wrong (remember, this is the “rumor mill”); Mr. Andrews contacted Mr. Reid and let him know that this is a personal matter that his absence is TOTALLY UNRELATED TO HIS CONTRACT. He will be at camp in a couple days. So everyone should chill out on tearing this guy to shreds.

Apparently he’s staying out of camp for “personal reasons”. This bums me out, this is the first negative I’ve ever heard about him.

wetdentist…there are NO reports saying he’ll be there in a few days, just cause the agent is trying to put a nice spin on it doesnt mean anything. He missed the last week of ota’s, and he’s holding out. Stop turning it into some puff piece spin.

I dont remember these players bitchin when they were given good money they didnt deserve when they were only in year 2 of their rookie deal. I bet Reggie Brown is loving his deal because he has not lived up to #1 expectations. Its the risk the team and the players take when you sign early. This is not going to help Westy get more money, the second the Eagles open the pocket book for him, more players are behind him with their hands out looking for theirs.

Shawn Andrews not at camp, but contract is not an issue by JasonB on Jul 24, 2008 5:13 PM EDT in News
Earlier today a “league source” told Pro Football Talk that Shawn Andrews would hold out of Eagles camp “apparently due to displeasure with his contract.”
The “league source” was apparently not anyone from the Eagles or anyone representing Shawn Andrews… from the official site
The Eagles have confirmed that Pro Bowl right guard Shawn Andrews and his agent have told the team that Andrews will not be present for the start of the team’s training camp for “personal reasons.”
Early reports indicated that Andrews was seeking an adjustment to his current contract, which runs through 2015, but neither Andrews nor the team has talked about the situation publicly. Andrews’ agent, Rich Moran, told the Philadelphia Daily News that it is “100 percent wrong” to suggest that the absence is related to Andrews’ contract, and that Andrews has talked to head coach Andy Reid today.
Obivously we’d rather Andrews be in camp that not, but it’s nice to hear his absence has nothing to do with his contract.
Les Bowen gave PFT a little shot after doing some actual reporting on the story.
Your Eagletarian immediately called Andrews’ agent, Rich Moran (which is the sort of thing we old-media types still like to do, rather than just throwing rumors up on the internet to raise sand). Moran said Andrews will not be at Lehigh tonight, but it is “100 percent wrong” to say his absence has anything to do with his contract. Moran said Andrews is dealing with a personal matter. He would not elaborate, other than to say it isn’t the kind of personal matter where you check into rehab, or anything.
“Shawn has been in contact with Andy Reid a couple of times today,” Moran said.
As for my take on all these threatened holdouts, until every owner takes the stance the Bengals took with Chad Johnson, players will continue to pull this crap, as long as it works, even if it only works occasionally.

Mr. Andrews is a somewhat related to a ornery mule. This is pathetic. I never support these athletes because they deserve nothing from me. They are paid insane amounts of money to play a sport I love to watch. Andrews could have declined his contract extension a few years ago to play out his small contract and hit the market. Andrews feared to lose the money needed to keep up his buffet habit (daily) and instead signed on the dotted line. It amazes me when people want to opt out of a contract. If you don’t want to make small amounts of money then don’t sign longterm contracts. Wait, that wouldn’t work for the players personal desires, so they sign and whine. Absolutely hate that.
And fans, don’t trash the Eagles for making smart moves with their players. They are known for for their willingness to sign players to contract extensions prior to the open market. The Eagles offer fair value but prevent outsiders (agents) from driving up the price by playing the match it game with desperate teams. In the age of the poison pill, why wouldn’t you sign your players early. Sadly the players out there want to desperately earn more money. Well, in the nfl there is always a need for backups. Westbrook will get his money and he will play for many years to come, but he won’t make 30 mil in three years. And Andrews will get a contract extension, in 4-5 years maybe.
I hope the eagles tell him to get stiff, if he holds out he loses money and then risks playing poorly and getting cut. If he waits all year then the team will develop animosity toward him and eventually find a way to cut him and get paid back. Most players who force their way out of contracts do poorly, T.O. aside (still no Superbowl though).
