To me the point is whether he got guaranteed money or that he could be cut. The point is the team can't renegotiate because they gave him too much money, but they'd still like him to play. They also could incur cap hits with all the dependencies that lie within. This....is what is lame about Urlacher's comments and the trend in the NFL that's annoying (See TO, Westbrook, Urlacher, Fitzgerald, Boldin...and on and on)

No one ever said that Bettis was a bust out...he had a HOF career. We all saw the run, believe me, we all saw it a million times here...but how does a guy who consistently ranks in the top in tackles year in and year out become overrated? Because he plays in a bigger media market? Listen I'm not his personal PR guy but there isn't a team in the NFL that wouldn't take him.

NYBearsFan,

Read the quote about a lot of guaranteed money up front. Key word, guaranteed. Which means he could have underplayed the contract in year 1 and still made a ton of money. Its GUARANTEED.

So, the question remains: would he have given his guaranteed money back if he underplayed the contract. In your scenerio, he only loses his yearly base salary.

Buckeye, LOL, LOL, LOL.....One bad game...or scratch that...one bad play that Urlacher had. I think the game 2 years ago against Arizone when the Bears came back in the 4th quarter to win on Monday night was an example of what Urlacher is as a football player. You obviously hate the Bears, and although they may be a wishy washy team as far as how good they are, Brian Urlachers accomplishments and talent cannot be undermined.

Tim,

If he underplayed his contract the team would have cut him. It's a two way street.

Urlacher definitely did not handle the situation well, but when you have blood suckers like Jay Marrioti covering your team, then the situation will always get a blow out of proportion. 95% of the shit Mariotti writes is negative and looking for shock value. Urlacher tried to keep it in house as much as possible, but working in the second largest media market in the country that is not an easy thing to do. I do believe he deserved a bit of a raise, so I'm happy they gave him his money.
As for being overrated, he may be a little overrated but that isn't his or the fans doing. That is all the attention given to him by the media. He is still one of the top 3 MLB's in the game. So I will take a great, but maybe overrated player any day of the week.

He's definitely overrated. Remember Mr. Defensive Player of the year getting run over by the Bus? Plus, check ut his stats from that year--not that great. He gets the hype b/c he's in Chicago, where there is a history of great LBs. Wouldn't be the same if he were a Texan.

VDogg, you should know casual fans never keep their opinions to themselves. That is the beauty of online blogs. I don't see you keeping your opinion to yourself when you called someone an idiot. I do think Urlacher is a bit overrated; but he is also a pretty damn good football player. I also don't see how he overplayed a contract when he was still one of the highest paid MLBs based on it (I think I'm agreeding with ya). Oh well, I guess being whiny and greedy is a job qualification for most NFL stars.

@Bearable

Hester is good kick-returner yes, but that's about all he's good at. Anyway, the way the Bears special teams play, a lot more kick returners would look great.

@ buckeyeo44 - you are an idiot. If he is the most overrated player why does every OC scheme for his presence on the defensive side of the ball? Do I agree with the contract he received or the way it came to happen, no. But casual fans should keep their opinions to themselves...He made himself a whining spoiled crybaby with the way he pouts with the media but the man can flat out play. He's still better than most of the MLB's in the game right now and he is older and slower than when he entered the league.

I'm sure there are a boat-load of former NFL players who would love to have made that "mistake" before they suffered a serious injury.

These players don't seem to realize that the long-term deal is a gamble for the team and the player. The player has security against an injury and the team should benefit from a lower salary structure in the latter portion of the contract...but it doesn't always work out.
